The Hyde

As a JP'ian, happy to hear about this place. Your link did not work, so googled this one...

Beaujolais Nouveau in Boston

Went to Rendevous Thursday night and they featured the BN '09. I thought it was particularly good this year. And the food, of course, was even better!

Romantic dinner, walking distance to Hyatt Downtown (Lafayette place)?

You are within walking distance of a LOT of restaurants. Locke-Ober is very close, but you have the theater district, Beacon Hill, Newbury Street, Huntington Ave. I would go to Hamersley's Bistro - that's my fave, but the Weekly Dig just gave a rave review to Lucca Back Bay at 116 Huntington Ave.

JP/Brookline/Rozzy

I ate at Regal Beagle on Tuesday and really liked it. I thought it was reasonable (apps about $5, entrees around 20), but would not call it cheap. We had the halibut, scallops - great. The stuffed dates, fab. The sweet potato tempura, meh. Great service, great vibe and I'll be going again.

Dorado's tacos are cheap and tasty, but I wouldn't travel to CC just for that.

Have you tried Himalayan Bistro in West Roxbury? If you haven't had momo's yet, here's your chance!

While you're at Russo's: Pumpkin Whoopie Pie!

Thanks for the info- that sounds awesome!

Dorado opens tomorrow! (7/29)

The fish in the Ensenada taco was great. I agree about the tortillas - they each came with 2 small ones, but I used only one and threw away the other. I got a plate - 2 tacos, the Ensenada and the chorizo, which wasn't bad. It came with rice (okay) and black beans (great!) and was garnished with a roasted pepper that was tasty. I really liked the Elote - grilled ear of corn with chile, lime and cotija cheese. It was the first time I've had it, and I'd get it again. It was more than I'd usually get for lunch but wanted to try as much as I could.

One final caveat - the place wasn't busy (before 12 noon), but it took 10 minutes to get the food. So it's not fast food, but it's been open less than a day and I'm happy to have Doug Oran back in business.

Himalayan Bistro - What to order?

I prefer the veggie momos to the meat ones. They are light and with Indian spices and you get 8 of them! I've found the lamb dishes delicious - not the leaden pressure-cooked lamb of so many Indian restaurants. The lamb was moist, tender and flavorful. The Aloo ko Achar was tasty, but the crunchy mustard seed was a bit off-putting. We try one Nepali dish each time and I've liked them all. They also have frothy drinks, like pistachio, that look like lassi but aren't made with yogurt so are much lighter. The drink had lots of pistachio pieces, in the Indian style, which the husband loved. Vegetable dishes fresh, bread soft, sauces tasty - we love this place. Add in the frequent-diner program and the fact they sent me a $15 coupon for my birthday and it is our fave casual dinner place.

Locke-Ober RW Experience with photos

I went today, based on your review and the listed menu. My god, it was fabulous. I have always wanted to try it this restaurant, but with a non-foodie husband, it's been hard to convince him to try it. So I took myself to a late lunch, and had the potato soup, the liver and the sundae, with a drink (or two).. He doesn't know it yet, but my husband is taking me there for our anniversary in June.....

Reading at the table? [moved from Boston board]

I have a late lunch reserved at one of the fancier Restaurant Week locations, but due to family and friends' schedules, will be going alone. How awful would it be if I brought a book?

Virginia's Fine Foods-Cypress St. in Brookline?

When this first opened in the 90's, it was a welcome addition to the Cypress St. area. My co-workers went at least once a week for the fresh sandwiches and sides of salads and the delicious desserts. I've been back a few times since I left the job, most recently in late 2008, and I found it okay. It's been years, but I admit that I am biased because of the time I went late one afternoon, was alone in the front of the shop and ended up calling the manager (listed on a call list by the phone) because the sole employee was so (apparently) stoned, he could not stand up straight. My understanding is that there has been a change of ownership since, and service was excellent when I went last year. But there have been so many other places to open in the area, and I love the sandwiches and desserts at Canto 6 in JP much more.

Winter 2008/2009 Openings and Closings

The owners of the Kwik-E sub shop next door are opening up this restaurant. The signs been up for a couple of months. Every week I ask "when?" and they say "Soon, but it is going slow." I second the "really happy to have Indian in the area".

French Macaroons in Greater Boston?

I was at PRB-Kenmore Square for Christmas lunch and the wonderful macaroons are no longer on the menu. Instead, they offer "5 French cookies" for $5.50. When I asked, I was told only one was a macaroon, and only chocolate, so I passed.

That said, I always get the plain almond ones at New Paris Bakery, 10 Cypress Street, Brookline. I've been going for years and they have delighted dozens of co-workers over the years. Not the sandwich type, which I find too rich. Just almond, just delicious.

Ghazal, new Indian restaurant in J.P.

DC and I tried the lunch buffet today ($9.95 each) and liked it a lot. Basmati rice, naan, samosa, beef korma, saag paneer, chicken tikka marsala, veg korma, chicken vindaloo and one other I can't remember, plus a large salad, raita, and a tasty but tamer version of the onion/red pepper garnish that is way too hot at Bukhara. We agreed the food seemed fresher and was much hotter than what we have at the B in the last few visits, and the wait staff was really nice.

I do like the fresh baked naan at the B, but the naan in the buffet was hot and soft and tasty. The other difference was the mango lassi - tasted delicious, but a MUCH bigger glass :) for less $.

I prefer veg pakoras to the samosa so ordered a side. It took a while to come out and when it did, the manager stated that due to the delay, it was on the house. They were a little dry, but tasted great.

Because of the smaller space, the buffet looks smaller than the one at the B, and they did not have the dosa as part of the buffet like the B has, but this will be our go-to place next time. I'm looking forward to a dinner there some time soon as well.

New Indian Restaurant coming to Cafe D space in J.P.

Building permit issued earlier this month for the old Cafe D space, 711 Centre Street. The name will be GHAZAL FINE INDIAN CUISINE, per the permit. I've seen work being done inside the space, but don't know when it is supposed to open or if the owners have other area restaurants. And it's about 3 doors down from Bukhara.

Anyone know anything about it?
