Family foods I thought was normal

i love this thread so much!

I remember when I was sleeping over a friends house as a teenager and they looked at me like i was crazy when I asked for butter to put on my poptarts. I still prefer them this way and so does my sister.

Stacking dishes, WTF?

just out of curiosity- on whose authority should I take these rules? not trying to be fresh I just never realized that the rules were so strict here. if dishes are to be cleared in unison in the same manner as they are delivered i'm afraid i can't afford to eat anyplace that isn't totally gauche. is it possible that etiquette is an evolving concept?

Stacking dishes, WTF?

Seems like most (although not all) current or former servers are cool with stacking. Maybe we should all take a hint. Stacking is okay, but don't do it badly?

Stacking dishes, WTF?

i think the mixed responses prove at least that stacking isn't confirmed poor etiquette. My bf is a former server and stacks religiously at the end of our meals. We've been thanked many times by servers. I personally don't mind sitting near stacked dishes- our table always looks more organized and there is more elbow room afterward, and as long as I'm in a restaurant, there isn't much about the arrangement of the plates that can make me feel like I'm in my kitchen with a pile of dishes. Someone else is still gonna do them for you. Chill.

Deseeding tomatoes: Do you do it, and if so, when/where/why?

Sandwiches! I can't stand when tomatoes aren't deseeded before being used on a sandwich- they make it so soggy if you don't!

What's wrong with my risotto?

... maybe its you? this is totally presumptuous but maybe if you're a smoker or are using a nasal allergy spray or something like that, it would alter your tasting experience... it just seems weird that the epicurious recipe was basic and universally loved....

CPK Salads

My boyfriend works for a dining service and last night he brought home a Moroccan chicken salad that was ordered as a mistake. Actually, bringing it home was a mistake. It was huge but we both agreed that it was one of the most disgusting things we've ever eaten. The ridiculous amount of craisins alone were enough to turn me off but combined with the butternut squash, avocado, DATES, and egg?? mushy. gross. never again.

LOLing at "the only time i see rude service is when people are rude to them first"

you're right, everyone is a human- a human who can take our their issues on another human without provocation from time to time

A Challenge for All Chefs

what a challenge! I am sorry you have so much on your plate right now!

just thinking out loud here, from my experiences on a gluten-free diet... here are some crunchy-ish things i like...

black bean cakes or lentil cakes and other kinds of veggie cakes/burgers can easily be a little overcooked to have a firm texture. they are YUM and healthy with lots of protein. etc.
i haven't tried applesauce but i think that squash would probably work.

corn chips, rice cakes, veggie crisps etc as snacks. there are lots of gluten-free snacks like that, especially at stores like trader joes. you could also try banana chips, they are delicious and crunchy and have more vitamins than traditional chips.

what about raw veggies? broccoli has a nice crunch and is pretty dry... you could cut them up into little pieces maybe?

thats all i got for right now but i'm gonna keep thinking about this. good luck!!!

New Trader Joe's items [old]

.... and beef from the united states is eco-friendly, right? honestly, I can't stand when people pick and choose issues when it comes to the meat industry. I don't eat this or that from here or there, because of etc etc. Look, it's almost all terrible. Eat it and accept it or... don't.

best lasagna?

It's in the burbs but I recommend Comella's in Wellesley. Yum. The lasagna is good and the family messes are even better

Is this why pizza is so much better cold and solidified for breakfast the next morning?

An easy way to make super gooey, low-cal fat-free cupcakes (for desperate dieters) is to just add a can of diet coke to a box of chocolate cake or brownie mix and bake. Can't believe it works but it does and they're good, too

Unique theatre concession foods

well it costs a fortune but my local independent movie theater in Brookline, MA, has a ton of options- healthy gourmet baked goods, all different kinds of spices to sprinkle on popcorn, a full espresso bar... in addition to the usual candy etc... and ice cream. I love that place. I can't afford it! Prices run how they would in a fancy bakery or something I guess. Prob around $3 for a brownie.

Best / Favorite 5 restaurants on North Shore??

Michaels' in NBPT recently had to close their dancefloor etc because of the DUI problem. Now there is seriously no place in the area to go out get wasted and make bad decisions. I'm not for drinking and driving but it's a shame.

more news about long-term implications of low-carb diets

don't intend for this thread to get inflammatory- I can't argue any more low- and no-carb dieters or the mods may well revoke my membership- but I thought this was important food- and diet-related information to share with my fellow eaters.

What is the quintessential food of your town?

I spent about 36 hours alone in Brussels near Christmas last year and I swear to god I had more waffles and spiced rum (what is that drink?) than most Belgians consume in a week. I brought basically a suitcase full of the individual packaged ones to my friends in Amsterdam. We spent a significant amount of time (probably at a coffee shop) marveling over just how incredible they were.

I second Flatbread in Amesbury. The Black Cow is good too but if you're in Hamilton and want to go a little more casual/fun I would recommend the Weathervane around the corner- generous portions, cheap(er) drinks and pretty good food.
What do people think about the Grog in NBPT? That used to be my standby up there when I was younger (went to HS in Byfield), but I haven't been back in a while (except to drink).

Best / Favorite 5 restaurants on North Shore??

The last time I went to Cathy's was about a year or maybe two ago- used to go there a lot in highschool. If I recall, they're a pretty traditional breakfast place, on weekend mornings we used to wait for probably 15 or 20 minutes for a table, and the food is excellent, great pancakes and stuff like that, traditional egg dishes, basically home-cooking. Nothing fancy.

Are these different from the gluten-free ginger snaps? Those were amazing and now I can't find them. Tracking down management at my TJs at the time I shop is tough too

Ten best things to eat in Boston

I grew up about a mile from Nick's RB. Since giving up meat a while back, the idea of never having another Nicks w/ sauce and cheese and mayo has been the one and only thing I have agonized over. I thought bacon would be hard but I haven't thought twice. But I have to avert my eyes when I pass Nicks. Its been really sad!
