Profligate Austinites Top USA in Taco [ and other ] Dollars

blah blah money blah blah supply and demand blah blah blah blah tangentially related to food talking point demonstrating our so-called intelligence

cant we all agree that we should torch the westside and let the minorities run wild? haha i only kid

also unfortunately the latest takers of my money have been the late night dollar menu mexican staffers at local fast food joints. damn you lack of dinero! (and time during the waking hours when decent people walk the earth)

Tex-Mex on Austin’s Southeast and East Sides, Part 3

well, it took me a lot longer then i thought (various extenuating circumstances that may or may not involve various happenings which may or may not have happened here) but here it is. dont expect mph level reviews because frankly, i am too zonked out most of the time to even care. you guys gotta pay me for capitalization, much less proper writing structure and attention to detail. lets do this.

vics bbq - on burleson and 71. not much really to say about this joint, just good ol bbq with all the traditional sides. not bad but not mindblowingly good either. havent had their bf tacos, but maybe theyre alright. its not like it takes a genius to fry eggs and bacon

catfish parlour - apparently they have free hush puppies on monday, so i went on a monday. first off, thank you for making free hush puppies. its just freakin fried cornbread. why cant more places do this? nice jalapeno dipping sauce too. ive seen some bad reviews of this place, but when i was up in 23 i ate springhill catfish all the time and the parlours catfish stacked up pretty decently against it. but maybe the free hush puppies swayed my soul.

casa moreno - came here for breakfast, which they apparently serve all day now. was not particularly interested in the lunch buffet - not only did some people have not so great reviews of it, but i cant eat that much to begin with. i aint payin five bucks more for one plate! just cause im american dont mean i can eat like a freakin lumberjack. anyways, i got huevos rancheros, and it was pretty good. except for the tortilla; like mph said, it was large (un pequeno burrito-ito, if you will) but rather flavorless. personally it did not occur to me that it was not storebought, but mph knows more about this than i do. the actual fillings were good tho. coulda used more pieces of bacon (which were pretty much hardened, but still good), but thats just nitpicking. overall it was alright, but six bucks for a breakfast plate at a mexican place just sticks to my graw. still, not bad.

la bucana - the old pasadita. looked for pasadita, couldnt find it, then realized they had just taped a piece of paper over the old sign and put up a new name. i go in there and see ready made tacos on the shelf, and various lunch specials. should have gone with my gut and chosen the lunch specials, but since there was an older white lady serving me i felt kinda uncomfortable so i just got a few tacos and hightailed it outta there. bad mistake, those tacos gave me indigestion for like a week straight. not fun. f- for rectal lava. thats the only grade im giving. maybe the lunch specials are good, but you aint gonna get me to try em.

bella donna - sandwich joint. kinda some ny inspired stuff, it prolly dont hold a candle to the real ny delis tho. their muffalettas are pretty good (or maybe i just havent had a good one yet lol), as that is what i usually get. free cookie with a meal too! tho its not very big. anyways, im pretty sure this is the best deli on burleson/oltorf/riverside. the runnings unopposed tho.

mariannas kitchen - right next to el meson, its rumored theyre owned by the same people. its a texmex place that gets pretty packed during lunch - i had the mexican girl burger here and it was pretty good. with dun dawgs closed (i think, i never see it open anymore) this is by default the best place on riverside for a burger (thats worth more than 1-2 bux obviously). havent tried the enchilada or the various other texmex trappings, but im sure its not too bad.

el meson - do i even need to say anything. mos def the crown jewel of the southern industrial wasteland that is burleson rd. thank you mexico for your great food and crazy drug runners

that is all. do not expect more because there is nothing left for me to say. have a nice day!

1063 Lıcensed Food Traılers ın Austın and I Ate at Each One

while i have no addresses because im a lazy son of a batch, i do have a story to tell from tonight. while driving down oltorf, i noticed that both tacos gigantes and el super taco were open. i parked in a nearby parking lot and gathered up my change, which unfortunately was only 1.25. im like 'theres no way i can buy a taco, but i might as well try' (which is pretty depressing). i decide to limp (fractured foot, i want to die) to el super taco, seeing as how there were more people around there (and it was on the right when i was going). as i wait in what i assume is the line and stare at the mexican lady in the trailer, a somewhat pale mexican guy comes up to me with a notepad. i find this a huge surprise cause seriously, who expects a taco trailer with a waiter. so im like 'listen... i only got a buck twenty five.' the pregnant pause afterward made me like 'okay... how do i say that in spanish?' but then he slowly says 'a buck twenty five... maybe one taco?' i would have shook him in happiness, but i was afraid that the language barrier would render this a big insult. so im like 'yes, one taco de barbacoa please!' after a bit, i sit down and slather some salsa on the taco. it is freakin great. will try again.

1063 Lıcensed Food Traılers ın Austın and I Ate at Each One

while my full report on east riverside/oltorf has only yet begun, thought i would break down what ive got so far

first off, my main studies so far have been on oltorf. there are four major taco carts on oltorf; going east of 35, they are glorietas florangel, el super taco, tacos gigantes, and tacos el rico. gigantes and super taco are only open on weekends (maybe friday night too). el super taco seems like it has the most potential bc it seems packed every weekend night, but i am always not in the mood when i pass by (what??? die). gigantes ive only seen open once. tacos el rico is always open (i wont say 24/7 but its open a lot) but i never see too many people there, which i take as a bad sign.

so far, i have only hit up glorietas florangel, next to the major brand next to the prince of peace church. there are multiple florangel carts around town, with one on riverside and the main one on n lamar. they serve honduran food, and having heard good things about honduran chicken, i forwent the tacos (what was i thinking???) and tried the torta. the torta was good, chicken was great, but there was too little in the way of extra ingredients. just a small layer of bean spread and a few tomatoes between chicken and bread does not a quality sandwich make. ive also tried the platanos with chicken, and again, the chicken was good, but the fried plantain chips with the salad didnt inspire me much. at this point i might go there again to try the tacos but i dont think this cart is a great representation of honduran food (seems more like honduran/mexican fusion)

on montopolis, ive gone to tacos balderrama, which is a bit before club terrace, i think (might be mistaken). its next to a gas station and a bunch of construction, and you can often see its cook lounging around on the seats by the side. i grabbed a pastor taco and a bacon/egg taco (out of cheese... you broke my heart, amigo) which were pretty good - nothing exceptional, but it gives me hope that there may yet be something else. further review may be warranted.

up on mlk and chicon, a new bbq cart has opened - stinkys bbq, so you know i had to check out new spots in the hood. i roll up and its a cool scene; brothers lounging playing bones, the smoker going, extraordinarily loud and shrill black chick talkin bout god knows what - to a 23er like me its music to my ears! unfortunately they had no ribs when i got there, so i decide to get a pork chop and sausage plate.i thought the meat was a bit dry, but maybe its cause i forgot to ask for sauce (what good is meat if its not drizzled with extraneous fluids?). the sides were what youd expect from a bbq joint, nothing great but not inedible. so overall not impressed, though the gentleman who ordered ahead of me was raving about the ribs, so curiosity is piqued there.

mi palacio on east manor - while this is not a cart, i had seen this empty mexican restaurant for sixth months without ever going in or seeing cars. so when i see the open sign flashing and a little girl standing in the doorway i figure this is my best chance. i go in and the scene looks good - owners daughter doing homework, a few mexicans off work drinkin bud light and playing pool. i grab two tacos (carnitas and barbacoa) and not only are they two dollars, but theyre small! not really that great, either. i curse the mexican taco gods and storm away.

oltorf/riverside guide hopefully coming soon!

i gotta stand by burgertex. those koreans are something else...

went to your moms burger off c chavez... not too impressed. was indie as all get out tho, must give em that

aint frans and dans pretty much the same? dans off manchaca gets pretty swamped tho....

mikes pub is pretty good, def cheaper and less wait than casino. and if casino has gone downhill then i weep a tear for humanity.

i wish i knew a place that gave you burger and fries for under 5. dun dawgs does burger fries and drink for 5, that might almost be the same thing

also scrumptious i plan on doing the riverside crawl soon, i just need to get the pockets right! also plan on checkin out bay seas, if its in the 23 i must learn about it! tho i havent hit up palacio yet either...

so i went to la gueras off s lamar today on the way back from the y on town lake... rather disappointed. the dude from tacojournalism said they had good al pastor, but the mexican friend i had with me almost had a seizure when i said i heard they were supposed to have better al pastor than rositas. yeah, not so sure about that... the barbacoa was good tho, cant front. but its kinda hard to screw barbacoa up (which unfortunately ive also eaten...wayyy too salty; cant remember where tho).

i think i really should do this riverside thing, i just gotta figure out what geographic area it should cover... from 35 to 183/71 on riverside/oltorf? obv gotta throw montopolis area in it, what about burleson? decisions decisions....

how is the texas cuban place, btw? i see it at the whip in sometimes, but its so expensive...

best new restaurant or trailer/taco truck?

indeed, la hacienda is the bomb. it seems that if you are a mexican meat market, the amount of mexican women you can draw upon is unlimited.

while i was going down riverside i saw a sign that said 'bahn mi express.' given that i used to live up north where bahn mi on lamar are plentiful, i figured id try it out. however i went in the shopping complex and it was completely deserted, with the stores all boarded up and everything. i felt like i was gonna be attacked by rabid junkies any second. so unfortunately that was a no go. but i did go to the 'im dun dawgs' off of montopolis. great place to catch a burger (or hot dog, if thats your thing. i dont eat em tho. wtf is in em) in the hood. cash only tho. good spot, grabbed fries, a bacon cheeseburger and a coke for five bucks. coulda been cheaper but cant everything! the search continues!

best new restaurant or trailer/taco truck?

please dont mention al johns, youll make me break down in tears...

its not new by any means, but if you ever are starving on riverside from 2-7, mariscos seafood off of royal crest (right behind the old regiomontana) has happy hour from 2-7 including half off appetizers! they have a plate with fried fish nugs, hushpuppies, shrimp and fries that goes for less than four dollars during happy hour! that makes this cheapskate very happy!

also scrumptious, you know what hours yolanda keeps? now that i go to acc grove campus, i go by the cart every day but never see it open. hopefully shes just waiting for the weather to get better... havent found much else on montopolis, tho im gonna try out the 'dun dawg' next; tried alonzos tacos and was rather underwhelmed...

also, has anybody done a cataloging of all the carts on riverside? i should try to pick up mphs old banner but that fool was straight pro, im only an amateur lol

ima have to check out the odd duck tho, but you know me; afraid to venture west of 35 lol

Serach for Austin Food Cart Greats

come on, if the op is from malaysia, they could probably get mexican tacos that are better/cheaper than izzos (which quite honestly, i have never been to - but i instinctively mistrust any taco cart thats not on the east side)

i would recommend a taco cart on the east side, but i havent seen el taco rico open for a hot minute. nowadays there are many taco places open inside gas stations (mi ranchito; the one on fitzhugh) but honestly i gotta step my cart game up... i oughta open a paki cart or something, shoot...
