Is Chinatown the best place in Manhattan to buy live lobsters?

To satisfy my monthly lobster addiction, I go to Johnny Lobster on 26th Street between 4 & 5 Ave, Brooklyn. He ships all over the world. Tanks are clean and he has a quick turnover. Last week, three for $21. I'm told that there is an upcoming shortage. Fishing quotes have been drastically cut.

The cake fee only compounded the issue. I brought a Strawberry Shortcake from Veniero's. My Daughters Birthday. It bothered me after the fact.

4 tepid thinly sliced pieces of lamb on polenta covered with a large piece of trevisiano.
3"x1" suckling pig on potato's
2 very tough, tasteless Steaks - one shared. I paid for sharing.
Precooked Risotto with undercooked vegetables-tasteless
Skate- this was ok.
Tuna appetizer, Sardines -good. Octopus tiny order. Ordered two as there was only a small piece not enough for one person. Tomato salad good.
Service us unimpressive with the service charge on the bill.

Yes they told me but I was the last to arrive. People were already seated and there was no way out. We usually do not eat restaurant desert so Peasant lost nothing except a returning customer. I was willing to accept the charge if the entire experience was good.
Believe me it was underwhelming.

It wasn't the small portions. It wasn't that the main courses were nothing to be proud of. It wasn't the hard to chew steaks. It wasn't the $100 tip. It was the $21 that I was charge to bring in a birthday cake.
Money grubbing opportunists. What good is ambience when there is nothing else.

Cheap Lobster

Fairway is selling Lobster for $5.99 a pound. It's the cheapest I have seen in years. I went to Johnny Lobster on 26th Street in Brooklyn to find out why. It turns out that these lobsters are called soft shell because they are molting. There is less meat within the shells as they are preparing to shed. Some people believe that the taste is different. They probably are Canadian as they might be molting before Maine Lobsters. There is always a reason for everything.

$18.45

Katz - couldn't believe the cost of a diminished Pastrami on Rye. Something had changed didn't even taste the same. Counter person was in a hurry and cut it too thick. Had to beg for more pickles. I'll think twice about a return visit. Let's leave it for the tourists. Price/Taste/ Value all out of sinc.

Calamari Surprise

Stopped in a convenience store on Manhattan Avenue near Greenpoint Avenue for a drink. Inside I was surprised to see a Pizza oven. Pizza looked ordinary. Paulie Gee is nearby. There was a sign for Fried Calamari. It was fresh not frozen and fried to order with a choice of sauce. Delicious.
L.A. Pizza presented me with the one of best Calamari I have ever eaten. $8 for a large order. There is a small eating area deep inside the store. This truly was a complete surprise.

Lobster Secret in Brooklyn

Had the yen for Lobster again. Went to T. J. Lobster King on 26th Street. Johnny told me the secret of saving money. I bought Lobster Culls. These are full size but have only one claw. Commercially they are not marketable. The savings was substantial. I bought three lobsters for the price of two. Fresh, alive and delicious. Believe it or not dead lobsters are called stiffs. Don't buy them.

Suggestions for Sports Bar in Arlington, VA area

When I'm in DC I stop in at the LA Bar. Total package.
Friendly atmosphere, sports on many TV's, quick good burgers and hilarious Karaoke on Saturday. I particularly enjoy the Thursday jam nights. Bring your instrument and join in.

Best roast duck and pork in Chinatown

I eat I at Big Wong yesterday. I was asked if I wanted the Roast Duck hot. If I had said yes, it would have been microwaved. This time I was asked. Sometimes it's microwaved without asking.

Best roast duck and pork in Chinatown

Both Big Wong and Noodletown microwave the duck before serving. It ruins the taste and becomes soggy. Both restaurants have new ownership and staff. Things have changed but not for the best.

Chinese Buffet [Albuquerque]

Sorry for not answering sooner. Big Wong has been sold to a new group. It still serves the great Chinese barbeque meats. I recently had two lobsters with scallion/ginger sauce for $20. The new owners are trying hard but those of us who know feel it's gone down a few pegs. I'm in Albuquerque thinking about roast duck, soy sauce chicken, spare ribs and roast pork. Take out order have gotten really expensive but with high rents and cost of doing business in NYC, it was inevitable. It's a must stop place for lunch when visiting.

Chinese Buffet [Albuquerque]

Thanks. My newly acquired Albuquerque friends love all the various Buffets. I settled for Chow's and it Was in the ballpark. We has Tsingtao Beer. What was funny is that when pronounced with a Hispanic accent it sounds like something else-a little more vulgar. I'm going home tomorrow. First stop will be Big Wong on Mott Sreet- not meant to be vulgar.

Been to Don Peppe in Ozone Park lately?

At a recent visit, we over ordered not realizing that portions were family style. When the food came we were approached by an older gentleman. He had a winter suntan, open shirt and at least four gold chains. Our festive mood immediately grew somber. In a lovely Brooklyn accent he inquired "Whoes Goin to the Chair". Was this to be our last meal or was our order truly excessive? In any event , we made sure we ate everything. I think of the frivolity and how the scene could have been in the movies. It was wonderful. So was the food.

Salumi in Brooklyn - best place/best prices?

I shop at Emily's on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg. It's an old fashion Italian Pork Store. Good prices and high quality for Italian standards. One stop buys all. Try the Barata.
