Non Dairy Milk Update

I don't know why, but the Whole Foods 365 brand organic almond milk (unsweetened) has a better texture than Blue Diamond - my former favorite. It seems smoother and creamier and is around $2 so competitive with Blue Diamond on sale. I've been wondering about the cashew milk too, but haven't tasted it yet.

What's your favorite vegetarian pasta recipe?

Whole wheat tubular pasta cooked and coated in olive oil
Boil lentils with veggie bullion and bay leaf
Combine pasta with lentils including some of lentil broth. Sprinkle with parsley, toasted walnuts and Parmesan (if vegetarian).

I think I am behind the curve, but I just tried the Qrunch burgers (original version) and they are delicious. They are not dense or overly spiced but light and delicate instead. I plan to try the other varieties.

Cabbage Mania, V & V Style

If you aren't vegan, you'll love this. My 12 year old requests this (but none of us like to take leftovers out of the house - they are a bit fragrant, but still delicious!):

Do you use a pressure cooker?

I absolutely love my pressure cooker. I have the 8 quart and 4 quart set and use both, sometimes for different elements of the same meal and multiple times during the week. I do think you could possibly just get the smaller one and cook most things. It's fun to think up new things to cook and I love avoiding using canned beans (I share the concern about the liners). I also find that the home cooked garbanzo beans are superior to regular stove top cooking, as well as better than canned beans (these are the one type of bean I do soak overnight - quick soak doesn't work as well). My son constantly requests the 9 minute risotto I can now make. I make pasta ( and polenta is so fast! I have a ridiculously expensive Fissler that was a gift (it is beautiful and so quiet), but the nice thing is that the two pans are made to stack, using less room. I previously had a Fagor that was not as good but still worked well. I love this website: It has lots of ideas and inspiration. I think it's worth the space.

Vegetarian Christmas Mains?

If you aren't vegan:
Of course, omit the bacon and I used wild rice instead of bread and added some kale. It was beautiful and delicious.

When you're invited to a BBQ

I couldn't agree more. It's the people and the time shared. I love food, or I wouldn't be on this website, but it shouldn't always be the focus. I always think about the MFK Fisher story in which she simply describes being happy to be an invited guest. Come prepared to be a possibly a little hungry but happy in the glow of friends' company.

New to eating veggie - need hearty dinner ideas

This is a favorite at our house and we use tahini or peanut butter if that's what's on hand. I brush oil onto my griddle and the thin layer is enough to get nice browning and a bit of crispness. It usually takes 5-6 minutes on each side over medium heat to brown. The nice thing is that the tofu is not mushy. It has a much better texture than average tofu. You can use the same technique with other sauces.

Best Vegetarian Chili Recipes?

The best black bean chili. I use whatever dried chilies I have on hand and the Muir Glen fire roasted canned tomatoes. Using the pressure cooker, my black beans take about 15 minutes on low pressure. Also, it is worth cooking the onion/spice/tomato mix separately to get a more complex flavor.
Also just tried the latest vegetarian chili from Cook's Illustrated. It is good, but needs a little something and I haven't figured out what, yet.

Best Homemade Veggie Burger Recipe

Finally had all the ingredients in the house and made this. It was delicious and very close to the original, especially with the charred barbecue sauce flavor. Thank you. I'm going to look for a rich dough to make slider buns for the patties this weekend because I want to serve them for my book club next week. I'll report back if I find a bun worthy of the burger.

Best vegetarian restaurants in USA?

I really enjoyed dirtycandy in NYC.
I was in town alone and treated myself to the meal. Several of the recommended wine pairings were really inspired and they serve half glasses so I could walk home safely. The entire experience including the food, the service and the ambiance were just wonderful.

Best Homemade Veggie Burger Recipe

I hate it when people comment about how delicious a recipe sounds before they have made it, but I so want to thank you for working to replicate the Houston's burger. I agree it is the best veggie burger out there and now there's a chance I can make it myself. It's hard to believe how much they charge for it, but it's worth it on the rare occasion I am somewhere I can enjoy it. I'll post again after giving it a try. I wonder if the potato buns in the July 2012 Cook's Illustrated would be a good substitue for the bun? I made them for Thanksgiving rolls and they weren't quite yeasty enough for that purpose, but they had a very nice grain and they aren't difficult to make.

Best Bakery: Parker-Lusseau in Monterey

The croissants are delicious, too. Definitely worth a detour off the main tourist path.

Northern California Road Food

The Albion River Market has a little deli that sells great desserts. We didn't eat any of the other items, but I imagine they are good, too. They have a good selection of all sorts of groceries, including some local organic items.
Also, the fellow pouring at Roederer (delicious sparkling wines) recommened the Albion River Inn Restaurant.
There's a bakery in Mendocino that sells cinnamon buns with a cream cheese frosting that everyone raved about on our camp trip. I don't know the name, but it sounds like it is worth researching. It might be the Mendocino Bakery & Cafe which gets good reviews on Yelp.
Enjoy your ride.

Dharma Cafe in Houston?

We enjoyed the brunch on Sunday about two weeks ago. The food was delicious. A pasta with a creamy tomato sauce was the perfect texture and so flavorful. All of the ingredients were obviously fresh and good quality. The food was cool because of the a/c vents blowing on the steam tables, but that was our only complaint.

Dallas Rehearsal Dinner Help Needed

This may sound crazy, but what about Louie's on Henderson? It's close to downtown, has excellent pizza and salad, and I imagine its other options are too bad. They have one room that could probably be used for a private party. Now I'm not saying your guests won't be concerned about the dodgy neighborhood, but I think a good time would be had by all.

Tio's Tortas (Dallas)

I can't wait to try Tio's. For fellow vegetarians, here is how they responded to my question regarding the beans:
Our black beans have a small amount of bacon in them. We have a small but loyal group of customers that has figured out that if they substitute avocado for the black beans on the Relleno or the Vegetale they have a true vegetarian (not vegan, mind you) sandwich with an upgrade for no extra cost. Hopefully this will be a solution for you.

Just want to warn others to avoid:
Lil Jonnie D Carlo's Italian Kitchen
482 Main St,
Placerville, CA 95667
Definitely a tourist trap, which I knew I should have avoided!, but didn't. The food was bad, the service was bad, and they served us the wrong beer and didn't try to correct the problem.

Worst Meal of 2006

I saw the "Worst Meal of 2006" thread for San Diego. How about Dallas Chowhounds, what's the worst meal you've had this past year? Doesn't necessarily have to have been at a restaurant.

The Forester Camino

We ate at The Forester on Saturday. As a non-vegan veggie, I was surprised that there was not a veggie option on the menu. But the side salad was very good; excellent romaine with red tomato and a little red onion. No iceberg lettuce. I ordered the grilled cheese and fries. The steak fries were hot and crispy outside/soft inside. Good bread and actual cheddar for the sandwich. Mother-in-law had the fried fish/shrimp combo and she said it was very good. Junior had the mashed potatoes, meatloaf, and vegetables. Husband shared and said the meatloaf was good and the potatoes had chunks, suggesting they were real, not reconstituted dry. I wasn't impressed with the Jack Russell beer I had, but that's not the Pub's fault. The pear strudel with ice cream was delicious. Having eaten in Placerville and experienced horrible touristy food (except for Z Pies!), I was very pleased. Nice atmosphere and good food for this level of dining. I was impressed that the menu suggested that adults with smaller appetites were welcome to order from the child's menu. Next time I am in town, I'll visit again.

Upscale Vegetarian

I enjoyed Lola and Local very much. I have particularly fond memories of Local, as we not only had good food but were treated so considerately. York Street was a disappointment to me, as well. There was only one really delicious item on the plate of vegetable sides.

Upscale Vegetarian

Stephan Pyles assembles a wonderful vegetarian entree from all the interesting sides on the rest of the menu. Yes, they are sides, but they are items like rellenos stuffed with goat cheese. It is not sautéed vegetables arranged in a circle on a plate, as I was served once at Suze. The waiter was pleased to describe the options and accommodated my request for a particular item. I am not sure a vegan would be as pleased, but for an ovo-lacto veg, it was a delicious treat.

The Best Restaurant in Dallas?

I do love Lola and Local, but I have to say after our dinner at Stephan Pyles Saturday night, it is near the top of my list. The waiter was exceptionally attentive and warm, but not overly so. The food was excellent. The ambience was very nice and until about 21:00 the space was very quiet.
Husband had tenderloin that was cooked perfectly. I had the vegetarian option which was not an afterthought. Every element was delicious. The only disappointment was the Pumpkin Creme Brulee. The tostado layers were a little tough.
There were some cutesy things, like the dressing arriving in pipettes and added to the greens at the table, but it was fun.

Late Night Dinner at Amuse on Lamar

Brunch was equally good. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Everything we had was fresh and well-seasoned. The spinach/gruyere omelette was perfect and the potatoes that came with it were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I enjoyed the cinnamon beignets. Just the way fried food should be done; not greasy at all. I encourage everyone to give Amuse a try.
