Smoked Paprika and Rutabaga Bisque

Fwegan, I made this recipe, and it came out a slightly paler version of the photo. You need to have the Spanish smoked Paprika. I'm guessing that the non-smoked paprika you used had dye in it (very common). Buy the good stuff and try again. The smoked flavor complements the earthiness of the rutabaga very well. Also, I'd suggest using an immersion hand blender in the pot rather than doing a complete puree of the soup. A little texture is nice.

Where to go, if you've been everywhere?

Foodwhisperer, I've had bad experiences at Triomphe, even though the food is excellent. The service was terrible both times I dined there pre-theater. On the first visit, our food was so slow in arriving (and the server so slow in taking our order), that we had to leave part of our meal untouched and run out the door in order to make the opening curtain. The second time we ate there, my companion and I were made to feel entirely unwelcome from the get-go. We were given an uncomfortable, dark table, and our server was rude and insulting. And even after I had asked her in detail whether several dishes contained any meat products (I don't eat meat), she served me a dish with shaved foie gras draped across the top of it. She seemed peeved when we didn't order wine with dinner, and perhaps that was her issue, but the mood of the entire staff that night was chilly. I won't go back to Trimphe ever again.

How about Oceana Restaurant? It's tiny, romantic, has a creative menu with top-notch ingredients, and it has a professional waitstaff that makes diners feel special. I love the decor.

Your Opinion on Sassafraz

Avoid this place like the plague.

My husband and I stumbled upon Sassafraz one cold November afternoon, and went inside to ask to see a menu (they do not display one out front, probably in an effort to appear exclusive). Oddly, we were handed a bar menu, and had to ask further for one from the dining room. We found the dishes interesting enough to make a reservation for that evening, a Sunday. When we arrived for dinner, there were a few people in the bar/lounge, but the vast dining room was empty and uninviting. Just one lonely pair of diners sat against the back wall. My husband and I were marched to the back of the room, to the table next to the kitchen and table-busing station -- a table from which we would have had the pleasure of seeing into the kitchen every time the door swung open. I looked at the hostess and said "No". She looked puzzled, and I explained that placing people at such a table in an empty dining room is equivalent to telling them to ... well, you know. So we turned around and left that sad, empty place and went to Cafe Nervosa just up the street. It was full of happy people, and the waiter welcomed us even though we had no reservation. As luck would have it, a table had opened up just as we arrived. We dined simply, but well. And we were treated with respect.

fwegan, if the color disturbs you, I bet adding a large carrot to the rutabaga wouldn't alter taste too much. It would punch up the color a lot. You could do the same thing with a few cubes of butternut or acorn squash.
