Fresh Quail in Pittsburgh

Anyone know where you can find fresh quail in Pittsburgh?

Boston Butt Question

going to make pulled pork in a few days and I have a boneless Boston Butt thats a little over 7lbs. I know I want to cook it low and slow but a 7lb roast is going to take a really long time to cook properly.

Can I cut the roast in half, cook both halves at the same time and cut the cooking time down a bit? Any reason not to do so? Thanks.

Your Top 5 or 10 Foodmarkets in Pittsburgh

For salsas she should look for 'Arturo' who sells a variety of authentic Mexican salsas. He is in the Strip district every Saturday in front of Penn Mac. (Actually the Greek store next door, but I forget the name of it). He also sells at several area farmer's markets.

Without a doubt the best salsa to be found in Pittsburgh in my opinion.

BYOB in Pittsburgh

Iovino's in Mt Lebanon and Wild Rosemary in USC/Bridgeville are two more very good options, although Wild Rosemary is probably long full with reservations.

Pgh butcher for out of the ordinary cuts of meat

Anyone know of a good butcher in the Pittsburgh area to get different cuts of meat like sweatbreads or veal cheeks, etc?

We'll have to agree to disagree. I've found more than one bartender at Fathead's with a good knowledge of beer. Plus imo the original Sharp Edge location is very good, the others fall off a bit.

Disagree about Fathead's. To claim it merely has a lot of beer and a staff lacking beer knowledge is not accurate at all. It might not have the atmosphere of Gooskis but its done a lot to improve the selection of beer available in the city. For just having a part in getting Bear Republic available here we owe the manager much thanks as they make one of the best IPAs in the country. And the quality of what's usually on their taps is high, my only complaint is they don't always have an East End beer on.

Pittsburgh, BYOB, 8-10 people

Legume is a really neat place that tries to buy as much as they can from local sources and the food has been very good each time I've been. The menu changes daily...

Imported beers by the bottle?

Sorry can't help where to find Penn beers in Philly, I'm in Pittsburgh. Just saw last week where Penn Brewery is leaving its current location due to, what the paper reported, a huge increase in rent. I hope thats all it is but given the econony and recent change in ownership I'm worried about Penn's future...I hope I'm wrong though.

Can't tell you if its northern or southern in style, you can certainly taste the hops in the beer but they do not overwhelm at all like say the Troegs Sunshine Pils (also a good beer, just different than Penn's). The Kaiser Pils is a very balanced beer and to me that shows the true ability of the brewer. Pilsner fans in PA are truely blessed that Victory, Troegs, Stoudt and Penn make very, very good Pilsners here. Penn is certainly my favorite though.

Another great Penn beer is their Marzen, if you haven't had that definitely do so in the spring!

The Penn Weizen is a great German wheat beer, very authentic in style. It also has won many awards, not sure what that says these days as just about every other beer has won some sort of an award, but the Weizen is one of Penn's better beers and that's saying something because they don't make a bad beer.

Another of theres to look for in the coming months is their 'Kaiser Pils', its an authenic style Pilsner that is fabulous if you like that style. They have rarely bottled it, in the past just in larger bottles 750ml maybe, but they are now planning on bottling it in a standard 12oz bottle, do try it if you see it.

Would be interested to know what you thought of the Penn Weizen.

'Burgh bakery recs for Anniversary celebration

Totally agree, Jean Marc's is a great bakery, definitely worth a try. Cakes and pastires are very, very good. His bread is as well, different than most of the breads from Breadworks and Mediterra in that its very light and airy. No disrespect to the French Tart but it doesn't compare at all to Jean Marc's.
