So, Wise Sons Deli is open ... who's been? Beauty's Bagels? [San Francisco]
Fabulous Babka with veins of choc under a thick crumb topping.
And, at last what seem like real bialies. Been so long since I had a real one and theris was toasted on the outside.
So many bagel bakeries fake bialys from bagel dough. Saves time. Nobody knows the difference, exept for a few who don't matter.
The smoked steelhead is amazing on a Bialy. Have not yet tasted the Beauty bagels they serve.
Searching for the long lost San Francisco Special Egg Foo Yung
old-fashioned EFY at Golden Rice Bowl across from San Tung on Irving st. Wok- fried in plenty of oil with a creamy center and crispy exterior. The owner is amicable with great hospitality. Also a real greasy version at Wooey Looey Gooey, Chinatown. Not as crispy.
Could Rice Bowl's be what you long for? Made me feel back East.
Top 10 Must-visit SF Eateries - The Budget Version
very mldly flavored Burmese food. Ask for heat and shrimp paste. Dennis the owner loves hot food but doesn't cook spicy for the guests.
Top 10 Must-visit SF Eateries - The Budget Version
same experience here. Dry meats. Not fond of the sides or any of the bbq sauces. Have been going to MM's for 20 years to see if I could ever again hit the sometimes moist sandwiches of yore.
Is the smell of musk down at Helmand Palace?
I’m looking for cheap/lower-cost but delicious food---how’s my list?
Nice but not Jewish style NY rye bread.
More Vienna syle.
Tommy's Joynt: One I can check off the list [San Francisco]
Thank you. The website lists it as Thursday.
Tommy's Joynt: One I can check off the list [San Francisco]
Has never been on many lists but "cheap" although it seems to be beloved by anyone lookin' for low prices, large quanitites. The meats often dry, luck of the draw, the bread sometimes tired.
Lamb shank is a Wed. special.
Sorry no one warned you. A wasted meal except maybe the lamb shank or buffalo stew. Better beef sandwich with real jus at Lefty O'douls -next time. But it is old-fashioned local color.
New to SF. Perfect tasting menu at 5star place for 30th bday?
Atelier Crenn, Newish chef, Madeleiine Crenn - one star, Guide Michelin
Thai Noodle represents sugary, flavorless Americanized Thai food at its worst
yelp: to give a quick, sharp, shrill cry, as a dog or fox.
2. to call or cry out sharply: The boy yelped in pain when the horse stepped on his foot.
Not much can be expected from yelp-ers. They like it cheap, familiar and democritized with oversized portions. They eat from the pocket and belly than the senses.. Plus, Yelp engaged in unethical business practices.
Do old-fashioned egg rolls still exist?
Dipped eggroll a while back @Cathay House, California St and Grant but still not what you're longing for. Call for availability.
Dine About Town, SF coming Jan 15-31, 2012 - any you going to try?
$35 for diner at Luce with Daniel Corey, sous chef under Madeleine Crenn, now with his
star, is a great buy. Sleek, modern, low decible meal with spacious seating. Great wine list and service, besides.
Cafe Jaqueline
they sure know how to doctor Campbell's nice strong clams. What about the house smoked salmon at SOD?

Eggplant parmigiana in SF?
Try Pasta Gina. Real down home S Philly cooking so the eggplant parmigiano may be breaded and fried instead of egg-battered.

Looking for thoughts on my "cheap eats" choices and possible ideas.
No.
Have never thought of walking through the smoke to try anything there.
Maybe I spaced on the name . Newish shop where Java restaurant used to be bet 5th and 6th on Clement. Only recommending the fried chicken sandwich so far. The 5 spice chicken sandwich is up and down but not as tasty as at Little Vietnam on 6th Ave nr Clement.
Looking for thoughts on my "cheap eats" choices and possible ideas.
Little Vietnam Cafe, hole in the wall, 6th Ave nr Clement St. Great grilled chicken Banh Mi, $4.50, especially, if they serve it hot from the grill but good cold to. Love the lemon Grass tofu $5 to take home for a snack. A few counter spaces and a little outdoor seating. Save room for a dimsum dessert on Clement. An egg tart coconut bun, sesame ball?
Vietnamese Sandwich Shop, bet 5th and 6th Ave, Clement St. The lightly coated fried chicken banh mi, though smaller than the grilled chicken at Little Vietnam, is wonderful. The grilled chicken isn't as tasty here.
Or skip the bahn-mi - just chow out on dimsum on Clement St.
$12 Tuesdays @ 2223 Restaurant @2223 Market St., the Castro. Great bang for the buck.
The pulled pork is our favorite. Also, the meatloaf.
Valencia Pizza: Little hole in the wall. Diner food. Huge portions. Platters with small salad, potatoes /pasta and three fresh vegs.
19th@ Valencia.
China Rice bowl acrossthe street from San Tung if the line is too long at the former.
Peasant Pies ~3.50 lowcal "pasties", green salad or soup. The chocolate tart for me.
We like the pork chops. Not the pizza or the Italian dishes, according to the friends who turned me onot Valencia. At these prices ($) it's hard to fault the cooking even if something is a little overcooked orthey forget the mustard in the mustard sauce.
Cool neighborhood. besides.
Suggestions or restaurants to avoid?
La Ciccia has some wonderful food but it is the noisiet venue I've ever been to. Maybe the vortex of noise concentrates just in the front of the restaurant near the windows, just so you don't mind the loud roar during the meal.
I wish the Patron would make some adjustments to the accoustics. Had I known how uncomfortable it was I wouldn't have tried it.

Favorite Cakes in the Bay Area
Arizmenid's All Choc Layer or the Choc-Caramel with salt.
Choc Fudge Golden Layer Cake, Blissful Bites SF
Boston Cream Pie, Creighton's, SF
Passion Fruit Shag, Citizen Cake, SF
Burnt Almond Cream Cake, Dick's SJ. Haven't had it in years.
"Rum" Cake choc & van layers, choc ganache. Often there's little rum flavor but the pastry cream, ganache and tender cake is lovely even w/o the rum
Crunchy crackly Fallen Choc Mousse Cake, the choclate restaurant where Delessios is now.
I wish someone would point me to an Old Fashioned Viennese Hazelnut Biscuit Cake with brandied mocha buttercream and ganache -all time fave.
Cheap Eats near California Pacific Medical Center?
Beg to differ about the overcooked chicken and tough beef at Askew. Rigolo is tasty.

Mangosteen fruit
Season is August-September. Irradiated and relatively tasteless. Not worth the $6/ lb price, bundled. No single pieces.
Robertson's Marmalade
Last marmalade purchased at TJs was Dundee's, bitter-sweet with Seville Oranges.
