2013 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Sorry you had that experience there. Honestly, I always felt quite welcomed. The servers have always been great and most of the time, the chef, Avi, would come out to say hello. Anyway, nice to be reminded of Weezie's - only ever had lunch there when it first opened, but need to return. Have a feeling they're not open Sunday nights which tends to be my night out to dine.

2013 Food and Restaurant CHANGES and CLOSINGS

Very sad to learn today that JAM Cafe on Carlton near Parliament has closed. I've always felt that for really good bistro-style food, this was one of the best, if not the best in Toronto. Not a huge menu but everything was prepared with great care. Loved their wine tasting nights as well, accompanied by very generous snacks. Never understood why the place wasn't always packed by those Cabbagetowners?

Jam Cafe - Carlton & Ontario Streets

I've been here many times, but had a meal with my family at JAM just this past Sunday, and if possible, the food is better than ever. The chef really knows how to cook meat. The chicken I had was perfect - moist, crispy-skinned - not easy to pull off. The appetizers were amazing - duck rillette and a decadent mushroom and cream dish with a crispy home-baked bisquit. Just tried Mistura last night (Winterlicious) for the first time, and while very good, and great service, honestly, I'd have to say the food at JAM is better-prepared, and more generous in portion. JAM is unpretentious, warm and still special enough in its atmosphere to make it a special occasion kind of place. They also have great wine nights which are a great deal.

Museum Tavern

Had dinner here last night. Love the room, though the hard surfaces really make it noisy and anytime something went clanging in the kitchen, it sort of pierced your eardrums. Similar to hungyabbey's experience, the service was good, but our waiter was slightly hyper and perhaps kept returning to the table a little too often. Loved my cocktail - strong, not too sweet the way these things should be. Food was ok I thought - might need to return and try something else. I had their double cheeseburger, and despite asking for it to be on the pink side, the two thin patties were well done and really, a bit dry I thought. This might simply be a function of their thin-ness - pretty hard to keep a patty this thin medium rare I would think. The fries were good, thin and crispy. My companion's salad looked go, though nothing too special. I'll return I think as it's near my home, and I do like the look of the place!

Swish by Han?

Very much agreed with this. A friend had given it a rave (for dinner mind you), lunch was disappointing. Each dish we ordered tasted the same as the last one, and it was all quite bland. Maybe we didn't order the right things? Also, found it pricey for the very simple, homey fare we were offered.

Buxton

I'll be traveling to Buxton in the Peaks District in the next couple of weeks and would really like some reliable, experienced advice as to whether any of the restaurants there are actually any good! Tripadvisor is so erratic - raves to complete boos for the same place. I really like locally-sourced meats and veg - doesn't have to be fancy as long as the quality of ingredients and execution is good. Any ideas?
