egg on my face. thanks for the links. and extra thanks for not rightfully insulting my lazy ass for being such a lazy ass. :-(

decent but not expensive places near Nob Hill Masonic Center?

hi everyone,
we're going to be seeing a show at nob hill masonic center on friday night at 7:30pm and were hoping to have dinner beforehand within walking distance of the venue. everything i've seen either seems low-end or expensive. not much in the middle ($15-20 per entree or so). any tips? open to any cuisines. thanks!

2011 Dungeness Crab

prices were $4 off the boat last weekend at Pillar Point.

Which Bay Area restaurants offer a table side cheese course?

i believe 321 Ellsworth in San Mateo does it.

also, although it's not tableside, i've been very happy with the cheese and meat platter at Martin's West in Redwood City.

Dungeness Crab Prices '10

$3.00 / lb sunday afternoon at pier 39. somehow i managed to eat FOUR WHOLE CRABS throughout the course of the evening!!!

Clamato juice anywhere for sale?

1. drive to your nearest latino neighborhood
2. walk inside anything resembling a store
3. purchase clamato

snout-to-tail + michelin ranked burgers: on the peninsula

maybe i'm missing something here. back in LA, fancy burgers (fathers office, golden state, comme ca) are all the rage. is this not the case up here, too? (recent re-transplant)

snout-to-tail + michelin ranked burgers: on the peninsula

hahaaha thanks. multitasking FAIL!!!

So when DOES the local crab season start in 2010?

any tips on where to get good live crab in half moon bay? prefer if it's straight off the boat!!!

snout-to-tail + michelin ranked burgers: on the peninsula

we really enjoyed VP a few weeks ago, and can't wait to go back for the burger. is it lunch-only, or can you get it for dinner at the bar?

thanks so much everyone. can't wait to try these places!!!

Why are videos playing from Chow Tips, when I didn't click on them?

this happened to me when i was viewing the sf bay area board (not a specific posting, just the main list of postings) and also when i was composing a new topic. i'm using chrome 7.0 on windows XP.

inexpensive persian kabobs in the peninsula? (RWC)

hi everyone,
we previously lived in the pico-robertson neighborhood of los angeles, which is heavily persian and middle eastern. kinda got used to having cheap ($6 or under) takeout options for kabobs and grilled veggies.

is there anything like that in the peninsula, especially the redwood city area? thanks!

smart* animal protein sources on the cheap? (smart = sustainable, grass fed, cage free, wild caught, pastured, etc)

after playing phone tag with the guy, i spoke and found out their delivery program works as such (for the SF area at least):

1. they don't post the delivery calendar until the week-of.

2. they'll be here (SFO) in 2 weeks, and have pickup times at a hotel near SFO.

3. sign up now, but don't order. very important. do not order until the delivery calendar is updated for your particular area!

4. once the calendar is updated to say when they'll be here, that's when we should place the actual orders

the calendar quirks seem to be related to their packaging/delivery workflow.

as for the meats themselves: they source the beef from paso robles-area growers, all grass fed. no grain. the lamb they raise themselves, but the goat is sourced locally. i didn't ask about the other animals.

thanks so much for the link to creston valley meats. i just spoke with them this morning, and i'll most likely be putting in an order for 2 weeks from now!

speaking of meat at mexican markets: does anyone know of any markets (most likely in RWC) which sell imported beef from mexico? there was an argentine market back in LA which sold mexican (and therefore grassfed) beef for about $4 a pound.

this is fantastic. thanks!

smart* animal protein sources on the cheap? (smart = sustainable, grass fed, cage free, wild caught, pastured, etc)

hi everyone,
i just moved to the area (Redwood City, to be exact) and need some help finding cheap sources for the following:

- grassfed meat, pork, lamb (any cuts, not just loin and rib cuts)

- pastured (aka actually cage free) poultry (chicken, turkey, duck, etc)

- pastured eggs

- sustainable seafood (per http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr...), fresh, canned, frozen, etc

- any other sources of animal protein (goat, wild game, etc) that is cheap

i'm not much concerned about buying stuff with the organic label, i'm more concerned with the conditions it was raised (and the accompanying nutritional profile).

i'm open to buying in bulk, as i know several people in the area who, like me, want natural meat and seafood but don't know where to buy. now that i think about it, i'd probably prefer to buy in bulk!

main priority (aside from the above-mentioned) is cost. help me eat smart on the cheap!!!

redwood city - yuppie-friendly places and/or gastropubs?

thanks so much everyone! we'll be sure to try out those places, starting with martins west and the refuge!

redwood city - yuppie-friendly places and/or gastropubs?

hi everyone,
we just moved up to RWC from los angeles. looking for places similar to the following from LA:

yuppie places:
nook
food
curious palate
bloom

gastropubs:
father's office
golden state
wurstkuche
tony's darts away

by "yuppie places" basically i mean places that have:
expensive sandwiches/salads
usually a one-word name
at least a superficial effort a local/sustainable sourcing
concrete floors + modern decor

any suggestions?

the pico robertson kosher scene

the place east of Robertson is called F & Y Sinai deli i believe. the ground kabobs seem to be a better deal than the chicken thigh. i didn't like the two stews i've tried.

Where on West Side to get Sonoran Hot Dogs? (Pineapple/jalapeno grilling etc.)

are you referring to "street dogs" or something else? i've seen lots of street dog vendors at the intersection of wilshire & western, but i don't remember seeing them any further west than that.

CARNE ASADA CARNE ASADA CARNE ASADA

i hate to bring back a thread from the dead, but has anyone been to el parian lately? i went this week and their carne asada was the best i've ever had there. the cut looked different than normal. the waitress and the cook were evasive when i asked them what cut it was.

Best torta in East L.A. area

This cemita sidetrackita reminded me...I had an EXCELLENT cemita at a truck parked in front of the Top Valu supermarket on Inglewood just north of Culver. REALLY REALLY REALLY SOLID. It felt like it was made with love. Don't really know how else to describe it. Their cabeza taco is also fantastic. I WANT TO GO TO THERE.

a brief comment on a late-night torta

i'm not sure i understand the question. suadero and barbacoa are pretty different. one is dry, the other is brothy. also i've never been to Gallego's Deli. basically i'm useless!!!
