January 2012 Openings and Closings

I noticed yesterday that Don Ricardo closed up. Sign is gone, windows are papered over and there's a building permit in the window.

Lobster prices in Boston

I'm relatively new to Boston. Cooking Xmas Eve dinner at my house for 12 people.

Who in Boston has the best prices for quality lobster?

Thanks for the help.

Cure my North End Boredom

If you spent $700 at Terramia you'll likely blow that away at Prezza and Lucca. I've not been to Tresca and don't know the prices. Carmen is a great little place and less expensive. Massimino's is fine but having my server taking a butt break in between courses....in front of the restaurant in full view..... and smelling like smoke when they return turns my stomach. It's happened more than twice on a few visits over the past two years so I've stopped going.

Stephi's on Tremont - Anyone go yet?

I went to Stephi's for lunch last week. Simply put the place is a Rip Off. Food is OK but the prices are out of whack. I had a bowl of soup (very small for $8), ahi tuna salad (big and tasty) and an ice tea...with 18% tip...$32.

Favorite spots in town to watch the game with good chow?

I just cut through the Copley Marriott for the first time in months and was amazed by the changes they've made. Most notably that crappy old Champions has been moved upstairs and now occupies the entire floor where the hotel meets the mall. It looks beautiful...huge bar, ample high tops and tons of TV's with game sound in stereo. I can't vouch for the food but I'll be checking it out on Sunday.

Family Friendly Upscale North End Restaurant

I went to Lucca a few months back with two family's that had a total of 6 kids ( ages 9-16) in tow. The restaurant was happy to accomodate and there was something on the menu for every taste.

Good eats near Franklin Park Zoo or surrounding area

Heading to the zoo this afternoon and looking for some casual lunchtime options in the area or en route from the Southend.. Nothing fancy...actually have a hankering for a burger but open to anything of good quality and low cost.

Can someone list some good eating challenges for me?

Pasta from Hell at East Coast Grill. It's only served during Hell Nights. It's the hottest thing I ever tasted and couldn't choke down more than a couple of bites. Next Hell night is in October sometime.

Erbaluce: love at first bite

The periwinkles are amazing. I've never seen them on any menus around town and have never had them before trying them at Erbaluce last week. I love this place in general. Everything is always delicious and expertly prepared. I put it at the top of my list of italians along with Prezza and Sorellina....but at a much better price point.

Taranga....Senegalese food in Southend

Never had Senegalese food but it sure was tasty. Very nice room at the corner of Mass Ave and Washington St. Good service. Wine & beer only..at reasonable prices by the glass. Smallish menu... 6 apps, 4 salads, 8 mains but all at neighborhood prices...apps $7-$9, entrees no more than $19 and big quantities but not gross. Not too adventurous in terms of needing an interpreter to order or worry about kick back from exotic ingredients. Just well prepared food in a comfortable room with friendly service at good prices. Give it a try.

Hungry Mother. Been twice and won't be back. B&G...mediocre and total $$$ ripoff IMO.

Joe Tecce's Ristorante

Unfortunately I have been recently at the insistence of a friend treating me to a Celtics game. It is truly awful. Poor food, bad service and overpriced. I'd strongly urge anyone I know to avoid Tecce's.

Your favorite inexpensive, spicy meals?

Pimientos del Padron at Toro. Not a full meal but an excellent starter. Lightly grilled small, hot Green peppers drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with sea salt.

Green St. used to (+/- 3 years ago) do a Caribbean Goat stew that was my absolute favorite spicey dish in the city. Was sorry to see that cut from the menu. Haven't been able to find a comparable goat dish in the area since.

Gourmet's 8 Great lobster rolls in Boston

I made the trek up to Kelly's on Revere Beach today for what I consider the best roll for the price. Loads of un chopped fresh tasting meat, warm buttered hot dog roll and light on the mayo. Pickle and chips. $17

I'm not a fan of the brioche roll at Nepturne and I think B&G's is a total ripoff in general as evidenced by the average tasting roll at $30. Can't comment on the others on Gourmets list.

Miami Cafe/SE

Looks like they're toast. I went by the other night and the place is empty. No furniture, cooler, pictures or other signs of life were visible thru the darkened window and gated door.

B&G

B&G is a complete rip off IMO. I had lunch there today and remember why I've not been in 6 months. $160 for two is ridiculous and it's not like we pigged out. Had a dozen oysters, two lobster rolls, 2 glasses of wine and 2 tap beers. $29 for a mediocre lobster roll...give me a break! This one is way off my list.

Best Italian sandwich in Boston?

Try the Big Ragu at Hot Tomato's on North St. in the North End. Nice selection of cold cuts...prosciutto, cappicola, genoa salami, mortadella, provolone & hot tomatoes vinaigrette on crispy italian roll.

Spring 2008 openings and closings

La Brace on Salem St. is gone. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did. The food was decent but the service was bad. Servers and staff tried hard but obviously had little experience and poor training. And more than twice I had servers who would hang outside the front door (sometimes with the owner) smoking butts before showing up with my food. Disgusting.

Too bad....the owner was a nice lady. She should have hired pro's vs. family and friends.

Gaslight report

I've got nothing to add that hasn't been covered in this lengthy string. But my thing with Gaslight is this...why I would go again when I could get better at Petit Robert or even Brasserie Jo? Proximity to my pad isn't enough to bring me back to Gaslight.
