Moving to Victoria Park & Eglinton. Need suggestions for a butcher, bakery, fishmonger, a decent produce counter, and restaurants. Is that asking too much?
While the weather is good, Victoria Park to O'Connor, O'Connor bus to Cosburn to Pape.
Hanson's, Danish Pastry, 2 Great Veggie Markets sells B & A Bagels and bread, C-Market has great poppy bread, french loaves, baguettes, and you can pick up some great floral stuff at 2 spots, also Folio Grill for fried Zuch and Gyros, on to Donlands, Select Bakery etc.
If you plan your route you can go home with what you need at a reasonable cost.

When it's -25 and blizzarding your best bet for what you need will be Dickie's No Frills, or take home what your need from downtown. Parkway Plaza has an Open Window Bakery, European Bakery for perogies and a Metro, best to get to know the produce manager at Dickies to get you through the winter. Turnover is frequent in produce department and fairly decent. There
are not many other options for bundle buggy shoppers. I know. Anyway you have Araz Bakery downstairs, unless it has left in last few months, with lots of goodies in their pantry and sweets. Hope this is helpful (former resident of Dijon Mustard building across the street) ...
Dimpflmeier apple strudel
Thanks for the reminder re: Montmartre Bakery, have not been there for ages.
Forgot all about them. I used to get their "So Vital" Bread, which is now hard to find.
Will be passing close to there this weekend and will check it out. Calabria is on the list too. It's on route to my Mom's and never knew of it's existence. Chow is great for info.
Hansen's Danish Pastry has awesome Strudel, but you have to get there early during holidays, they sell out quickly.
Olive oil from Jordan, Syria or Lebanon, where to find?
That's great news, now it's even closer to me. Have not been by Jones since August. Things sure change fast. I am looking forward to trying their products.
Thanks for the update, saved me a trip in the wrong direction.
Olive oil from Jordan, Syria or Lebanon, where to find?
The olive shop near the Danforth is called Olive and Olive Oil. It's at 585 Jones Ave. at Danforth. The owners are from Turkey and the olives are organically cultivated there.
They have olive soap as well. I've passed by there many times but did not have time to stop.
Will have to go soon. Would make a nice hostess gift.
VIKING DELI FIRE
Thanks so much for the info, I will be over that way this week for the Wildly Delicious sale and did not know about their outlet. Will have time to get some in the mail for the holidays. Appreciate it.
VIKING DELI FIRE
So sad to hear this. Have an uncle in Ottawa from Norway in a retirement home.
Now where will I get him his favourite treats.Especially Licorice.
Hope they can recover. Glad no one was hurt.
Speciality Sea Salts
Check out Selsi Sea Rocks at the SLM -lower level- for sampling. They have salts and peppercorns (sometimes fresh) from around the world and are happy to enlighten you on the products..
Any Urban Garden Share Programs in T.O.? I provide my backyard and get produce in return...
East York Community Garden has individual plots where you grow food for yourself as well as some to give to the foodbank and others in need. It supports seniors and people with Diabetes type 2, it has a childrens garden and is used as a teaching garden for youths. You can grow veggies, herbs, flowers, trees, shrubs, perrenials, annuals the works. Home Depot helps prepare the beds, and they have a harvest party etc.
Sorry don't know how to do a link but google East York Community Garden and all the info is there. Not sure about the waiting list though.
Bakery at O'Connor & Pape?
Thanks for reminding me, I've heard good things about them and have been meaning to go there. Will definitely check them out soon.
Bakery at O'Connor & Pape?
I love Select Bakery, I moved into the area in the middle of one of many storms last winter and found this wonderful gem.
I'm rather addicted to the Ekmek Kataifi, a rich custard with honeyed angel hair pastry on the bottom and topped with shaved chocolate, cinnamon and a wee bit of a rich whipped cream. Yum. Try to limit to twice a month, it's rich.
They also bake bread twice daily, a village loaf fresh from the oven around 11:00 am is marvelous. Olive bread is also great.
The apple squares are loaded with apples and the apple turnovers are light and delicious.
While I find the cakes too rich with whipped cream, the cookies and biscotti are great. They also have a full deli, great feta, spinach pies, I could go on...
See for yourself. I'm Irish, but loving my greek neighbourhood!
Another note, popped into Donlands Bakery also when I moved here and left without purchase, was not feeling the love. The Danish pastry shop is good, lots of strudels and always fancy wee cupcakes for festive seasons that are a cut above the usual grocery store fan fare.
This is a great neighbourhood, best breakfast is at Sammy's Eatery and Prime Rib Restaurant. Donlands and O'Connor $4.95 will fill you up for the day. I know the owner, followed him through 5 restaurants, including Rosemary and Thyme. But that's for another post.
If there are other bakeries I should be exploring please fill me in.

Cultured unsalted butter in Toronto (East york)
Try Fresh From The Farm on Donlands south of O'Connor.
1 Lb is about $5.70 Salted or Unsalted.
Most of their products are from Mennonite country.
And while there pick up some turkey burgers, they are beautifully seasoned.
Wedding Venue with Outside Space (and good food)
The best kept secret in Toronto for a wedding venue is Cedar Ridge Creative Centre on
Confederation Drive in Scarborough. It is the perfect venue for what you are looking for.
You bring in your own caterers, wine etc. Though kitchen is limited. so need a good caterer and capacity is only 80. But such a lovely place, grounds are beautiful, lovely historical house with wrap around porch, place for musicians dancing, ceremony can be indoors or out. (ours was outside with archways and chairs includded in rental) You can add all sorts of personal touches to compliment your theme.
We had our marriage ceremony, pictures and cocktail reception there and all the guests, many from out of town, where happy not be driviing to and fro and waiting for hours for it all to enfold. There's a long lane way with a curved entrance, I wish I did a horse and carriage thing as there is a historical carriage house attached to the property. It backs on to a ravine so lots of trees, very quiet and tranquil, private. As long as you stick to the 80 capacity it worth cutting your list down for a quality, decently priced venue that won't break the bank and is more about the actual marriage than the big party. It's a special place. Check it out. All our guest said it was the best wedding they had ever attended, it was classy yet unpretenious. (A Good Year Blimp was overhead as we said our vows so maybe it was just a good day to get married)!
