Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 3rd quarter 2011 [Old]

Completely agree on how bad the butter chicken is! Especially disappointing as the chicken tikka masala is quite good (as is the saag paneer).

Yays: Lemon Bars (frozen section), Raspberry & Cream Ice Cream Bars, Chocolate Sorbet (surprisingly decent for being so low fat), Blueberry & Vanilla Cream Yogurt Cups (LOVE), TJ's Cream-Top Milk (OMG, orgasmic...I buy a jug every week), Rosemary Pecans & Cranberries, Sweet & Spicy Pecans, Danish Pancakes (the round balls...So good), Watermelon Juice, Carrot Cake Sandwich Cookies, Onion Ring Chips, Cheddar Puffs

Nays: Butter Chicken (blech), Papaya Salad (inedible and way too spicy), Chicken Egg Rolls (these are so bland and flavorless), TJ's Hazelnut Creamer (has a funky taste, had to return it...Nothing like Coffee Mate version), Microwaveable Mini Pizzas 4 Pack (meh)

Hotcakes Bakes in Culver City has them...In regular and mini sizes. The owner (who was featured on Food Network a couple times) is French and she seems to be quite proud of them!

Marzipan layered cake

I'm not sure if there are cakes with marzipan in the layers, but the Princess Cake at Victor Bene's bakeries in Gelson's markets has a marzipan layer covering the entire cake. It's a nice spring-green shade, too.

REVIEW w/ pics: Korean Clay Roasted Duck at Dha Rae Oak

Nice review! Good to know that you enjoyed it...I've always wondered about this place and what they serve whenever I drove past it! :)

Excellent Yogurt From Canada

Yes! It's so creamy it feels insanely decadent, doesn't it? I haven't tried strawberry rhubarb (haven't seen this one) but I've tried blueberry, raspberry, and honey (the honey is just the "base" yogurt, I believe).

Excellent Yogurt From Canada

You know, i've seen Liberte around for a while and I do think they're good, but my absolute, 100% favorite these days (aside from Fage full-fat yogurt) is Noosa (http://www.noosayoghurt.com/). OMG. I find them at my local Whole Foods and it was love at first bite. These are ultra-creamy, slightly thick but not Fage-thick, and slightly sweetened to perfection!

How do you like your coffee?

I guess my tastebuds aren't as highbrow as I'd like them to be, because I just can't take black coffee. The way I make my coffee these days is to heat a cupful of Trader Joe's cream-top milk and, essentially, make "milk with coffee."

Poll: Would you eat a dog

Probably not, unless I was in a setting where it would be considered offensive to not eat it! I do have a soft spot for all "cute" creatures, such as dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits (though I did partake in rabbit meat recently...). I do think, however, that Americans tend to anthropomorphize all animals somewhat extremely and this just isn't the norm in other cultures. That is why dolphins are not eaten, or guinea pigs, or dogs, I suppose (and whales, if you discount the whole endangered-species bit).

Casa Sanchez 4500 s. Centinela Los Angeles

The food is definitely good. However, if you're looking for some quality conversations to take place, find another place. When I went there a couple years ago, it was deafeningly loud and the band would take 15 second respites in between songs and go back at it full force. If you want that, then it's perfect...just giving you a heads up.

Creamy, Thick, Icelandic Yogurt

I was really excited when I saw this at my local Whole Foods (Los Angeles) so I bought three right away, plain, blueberry, and I forget the third flavor. I really wanted to love it, and indeed, I did love the thick & rich texture, but the taste was an extreme disappointment. It tasted like milky vomit (and I'm not exaggerating). Just left a very displeasing aftertaste...

Westside Tavern

Thanks for the review Paul! I was afraid this lot was abandoned due to lack of funding or something at the last minute because it took so dang long to open. I love me a good mac & cheese so I'll have to try it out!

While I also believe the prices are a bit on the steep side than expected, they can probably charge more than your usual establishment because the crowd that the Landmark draws tend to be more "highbrow."

Porto's Bakery - what kicks ass?

I tried their cheese rolls once (yes, just once)...They were absolutely delicious. I have to say though, if memory serves me right, they tasted just like the cheese rolls/danishes sold at Goldilocks (a Filipino baker/restaurant chain).

Also, I got the whole red velvet cake there for my birthday. GEEZE Louise! It was an intense cake, high and layered and just all-around amazing. Rose petals adorned the top of the cake and it was absolutely delicious (and I know my red velvets!). If you love red velvet or anything with cream cheese frosting, this is a must-try.

Cowgirl Creamery cheeses

Thanks Maria. I do know for a fact that the Red Hawk that I got had the red/orange streaks all over, but, there were also the tell-tale mold spores growing on a small portion of the cheese, as well. I thought the rest of the cheese would be fine, but it wasn't. Honestly, I think even if I had laid it out to breathe, the taste/smell would have been just a putrid. I believe it's as you wrote, about it being mishandled either in transit or at the third party vendors'. I am still going to try one more time though (buy from a reputable cheese store in this area), and will repost if successful.

Thanks for your insight!

Best Mexican...

I second what muchovinomamacita said: Paco's Tacos (near or in Culver City)...SO good. It just puts El Cholo to shame.

As for slightly ghetto/street-style food, my vote has to go to Mariela's Taco near Koreatown...

Cowgirl Creamery cheeses

Your sentence about the overripe Red Hawk totally nailed it on the head. There was a definitely VERY strong ammonia smell, and when I tasted it, it "stung" my tongue and the smell was just like hair dye (if you think about it in those terms).

Cowgirl Creamery cheeses

Hi Melanie,

Yep, they definitely had that ammonia smell. And heck, I even tried a bit of it!!! The overpowering smell just about floored me. I think it's just been mishandled...

Cowgirl Creamery cheeses

Thanks rworange! I've done some reading before delving into Cowgirl's cheeses, and so when I found the "real thing" to be so rancid...I was quite taken aback. I think these were definitely bad...

Cowgirl Creamery cheeses

Hi, I live in the LA area but I'm posting to the SF board because, obviously, Cowgirl Creamery is up north. I had the chance to purchase the Red Hawk as well as the SF Drake cheeses at specialty food stores here in LA, but much to my dismay, I think both of them were bad. Now, I know that washed-rind cheeses are very "odorific," but being that I appreciate all cheeses, I'm quite certain that these were bad. I even attempted to taste one of them and all I could think was that the cheeses were rotting away, and most definitely not fit for human consumption.

So the question is: am I missing something here? Are the cheeses supposed to stink *that* bad? And more importantly, what is the shelf life of these cheeses (let's say, kept in the fridge in its original packaging).

Thanks in advance!

Best Vegan Restaurants

I'm not vegan by any means, but I have a friend who is and so I've been to several key vegan joints mentioned in this thread already. But, I have to say that my ultimate favorite vegan joint in LA is Casa De Tree. There are two locations: one in Culver City area and the other in Torrance. They actually have lunch vegan buffets! I highly recommend it.

Pure Luck is pretty good, too...but my vote has to go to Casa De Tree.
