PDX-Specific Foods, Dishes, Brands?
My girlfriend and I are going to be visiting Portland for the first time in a few weeks and I was wondering if we should be on the lookout for any Portland specialty dishes. For example, in New York you'd get pizza or a bagel, Philly has cheesesteaks, hoagies, and soft pretzels, Chicago has deep dish pizza and the Chicago hot dog.
Anything PDX is known for? Or any local brands of common things that are really great and we should watch out for?
Good BYOB Thai Place?
We left before I could see Erik's reply, but I'm happy to hear you say that, because I didn't find Penny's to be all that good (although I've had much worse, too).
Good BYOB Thai Place?
Thanks for the replies, all. We ended up going to Penny's Noodle House in Wrigleyville but will definitely check out some others.
FWIW Penny's was okay, not great. Good outdoor seating area right next to the brown line tracks. Found a great Argentine Malbec (Chakara 2003) that pairs well with spicy Thai, too, so that should keep us looking for new BYOB places for the rest of the summer.
Good BYOB Thai Place?
Does anyone know of a GOOD Thai place (preferably on the north side) that is also BYOB?
Fixing Burnt Soup?
Thanks. I already moved it out of the pot and into containers so they could sit in the fridge while I pondered what to do with six quarts of leftover burnt soup.
Fixing Burnt Soup?
Today I made a huge batch of Beef Barley Vegetable Soup. I had a bowl and it was absolutely delicious.
Unfortunately, I accidentally left the burner on while I was having the first bowl, and by the time I went back into the kitchen about 20 minutes later it had burned only a little on the bottom, but the entire eight quarts of soup tasted burned. It's not awful, and if I have to I'll eat it rather than throw it all away, but dang, it sure tastes like burning.
Is there anything that can be done to salvage it? My dad suggested putting some large-cut sacrificial potatoes into it to filter out some of the burnt taste, but before I bought some spuds I figured I'd ask if anyone knew of a home remedy for taking the burnt taste out of soup. Surely I can't be the first person to do this.
Google totally let me down on this matter.
