Pre-fast desserts - what are you indulging in?

Thanks both! I mostly stock the store brand chips or "kosher store" pareve bars at home, but occasionally splurge on the better stuff, and wondered if it makes a difference here. It seems like it would be important in this recipe, but on the other hand, I like any chocolate too.
I avoided chocolate pre-fast (caffeine) but look forward to making this for one of the upcoming holiday meals.

Restaurants with a sukkah in Center City Philadelphia

Yup actually Thursday through Sunday "Fall term break" according to the Penn academic calendar. So Hillel will be closed. But I am sure the sukkah will be up.
I do rely on them for at least one meal when I travel to Philly. Not too far from downtown either by cab or subway. Hillel dining is not cheap but has decent food (recommend the made-to-order grilled chicken wraps, nice salad bar, and soups) and great atmosphere- really nice kids.

Sunday of sukkot will be Fall break at Penn. You can probably bring food to eat in campus sukkah but don't expect dining hall to be open.

Adina and Queenscook-- what brand chocolate did you use? Sounds delicious.

Kosher Madrid

My cousin did this same layover a couple of months ago, but brought food with her so she could spend time seeing the sites. She went to 2 museums, walked around a lot, and had her lunch in a park. She stopped in a department store which had a large food court and bought some fruit and chocolate at the end of the day (she does speak spanish, and had a copy of a kosher list that she found online). She took the metro to and from the airport. She spoke very highly of the experience, but frankly, the food was not the focus.

Need Paris Kosher business travel advice

I've had such meals many times in NY and other places in the US, and restaurants are usually gracious and accommodating, as are fellow diners. It sounds like things may be different in Europe...

Need Paris Kosher business travel advice

Any advice then? Is it a bigger faux pas to bow out of dinner all together ( and lose major points from a business perspective) or try to somehow arrange something (though it may not even be possible)?

Hopefully that was a unique situation. That could be really uncomfortable.

Need Paris Kosher business travel advice

I will be going on a business trip with associates but will not be in a situation where I can choose the restaurants or eat on my own. There will be lunches in an office setting and a group dinner at a restaurant. Is it possible to make arrangements for a kosher meal to be brought into a restaurant in Paris? Any recommendations about delivery to the office (if possible)?
Thanks!

KISHKE- Egg or no egg?

I don't use egg when I make kishke...carrots, onions, oil, flour, salt and pepper. Roll up in foil and bake.

Purim 2013

I got hamentashen that had a pistachio filling with the faintest hint of cardomon. They actually didn't look very pretty--but tasted amazing! Reminded me of baklava or one of those sephardic pastries.

suggestions for Thanksgiving dessert

lburrell, I finally got around to making your vegan lemon bar recipe for shabbat dessert. It was a big hit! Just the right amount of lemon flavor, and a nice change from brownies and other chocolate desserts. Thanks again!

Chulent- first time!

Gotcholent: great pics! Looks like delicious cholent. How do you serve it when it's done? Do you serve the cooked mazta meal crust with each bowl, or on the side, or does it just sort of get mixed in?

Thanks all for the suggestions. My meeting is in Cary. I don't have a BJs membership, so I will probably go to a regular supermarket or TJs. If there are any specific locations with a better selection of kosher items, please let me know.
Duke Hillel will be closed when I am there- thanks for reminding me about college break!

For an upcoming business trip--is anyone familiar with kosher offerings in the Raleigh/Durham area? Shamash lists a dining hall at Duke and a restaurant in Wilmington, over 2 hours away. In the absence of a restaurant- any supermarkets in the area that have a reasonable selection of Sabra/ kosher deli?

Best kosher options in Las Vegas

Report on a recent business trip-Jerusalem Grill did a very nice job of packaging a take-out meal for me- appetizer, chicken main dish, dessert, drink. They threw in little containers of hot sauce/tehina without my asking, and had the whole thing ready quickly. Solid job- I'll go back if I am here again.
I relied on Coffee Bean for lunch, had a veggie wrap which was good, not great- the main thing was that it was available when and where I needed it. I went to the one at the Venetian (actually there were 2, one had some salads and the other sandwiches and wraps).

french fries

I used to go to Naomis years ago (maybe 20 years!) and liked the falafel very much. I wonder if it's changed. I think Naomi herself is no longer living, by the way.

I never thought of trying it with pineapple- great idea! I made a"plain" cranberry Nantucket pie for shabbat dessert last week. Delicious, and tasted even better the next day.

looking for a typical 'delicatessen' recipe please?

We kept kosher so that's why we used kosher salami, but I think you could use any kind that you find tasty. Kosher salami does not contain pork.
Cut in slices or half-moons.
It looked like this, something you can find in a supermarket deli case, though I can't vouch for this exact brand since I haven't bought salami in years. But I may need to get some in the morning!

salami and eggs was the very first dish I ever cooked as a child, I think at 9 or 10 years old. .
take some salami- not too thinly sliced. I don't remember what kind of salami my mother bought- kosher, not too spicy, about medium sized (not the wide kind but not the really thin "hard' salami either).
place in a hot pan, no oil necessary
fry on both slides til light brown
pour in some eggs beaten with a pinch of salt and pepper
flip when the eggs are set and cook on the other side
serve immediately.
Wow I haven't made them- or even thought about them- in years! Now I have a craving...

Making New York Cheesecake for the first time EVER, any tips?

Cheesecake is not as difficult as it looks. Leave plenty of extra time though- it's not something you can throw together at the last minute.
Before you start, leave out your eggs, cream cheese, etc at room temperature. The cake will be smoother.
Make sure you beat the cream cheese until it's really smooth before adding other ingredients. No lumps. It's hard to get rid of the lumps once you add other ingredients. You don't want to whip in too much air- just beat the cream cheese slowly on low until nice and creamy. Good luck!
Good luck!

Sure I'd love a vegan lemon bar recipe. My "fail" was more bitter than sour- may have had too much pith when zesting my lemons.
Thanks!

Do you mind sharing your lemon bar recipe? Last time I made them (I think it was a recipe from the newspaper) they came out kind of sour/ bitter. I'd like to find a good pareve recipe.

I just stocked up on cranberries and am planning to make it this week as well. It's so quick to put together that it's great for those short winter Fridays (or cold late Thursday nights) when prep time is at a premium.
