Any Kosher offerings in Union Station, Washington, D.C.?

Here's the report: Near Track A, next to a Sbarros, there's a Tops Fro Yo place. Behind the counter there's a small fridge and a sign saying there are kosher wraps to go sandwiches. the choices were chicken or turkey- I got turkey ($7.00) on rye and ran for the train. The sandwich contained two packets each of mayo and mustard, and rather limp lettuce and a slice of tomato. The turkey slices were actually pretty tasty. Overall, the convenience couldn't be beat, since there was no way I would have been able to buy or carry something else between meetings and still get to my train.

I have a tight connection at Union Station- anyone know if there are kosher packaged sandwiches or similar food I can pick up for the train ride?

Buddah Bodai and 2nd Ave. Deli - calling all Chowhounds

That was really funny Adina. Thanks for sharing!

Kosh in Stamford, Connecticut

I got an email that they are having a "Grand Opening and Open House" on Monday, January 30th at 6:00. Seems like it may be worth the trip.

Lindt Chocolates

I really wish they had a pareve designation. Looks like their dark chocolates --85%? 90%? 99%???--SHOULD be. Oh well...

Feeding the cancer patient who becomes a transplant patient

From what I hear, people recovering from this type of thing usually prefer pretty bland food at first. Some thoughts:
Instant couscous- takes a couple of minutes to make (just add boiling water) and you can cook a small portion separate from the rest of the family.
Baked potato- scrub, bake in microwave ( or regular oven if you have time), then scoop out the middle right when he's ready to eat.
For make ahead meatloaf or mini casserole, consider putting portions into muffin tins, baking, then freezing. These should heat up quickly and will be small enough in size for a limited appetite.
All the best to you.

Kosher Restaurant for Baby Shower - NYC (UES)

I think it would be fine to have kids there.
Another place on the UES is Eighteen. It's on E 81st St, nice but not too formal. I think they do parties- it's worth a call for comparison if nothing else. In addition to Mediterranean /grill they have sushi as well as deli. Quite a variety, I know, but sure to please a kosher crowd. I will look for the # and post.

Nargilla Grill on the Upper East side comes to mind. I went to a birthday party there with about 20 other adults. Mediterranean food, good salads, casual enough for a celebration.

Jewish haimish cooking goes Tribeca

A comment from one of the owners, posted here
http://tribecacitizen.com/2011/05/11/the-menu-for-kutshers-tribeca/
summarizes their philosophy regarding kashrut:

"Zach (Kutsher) did not want to be constrained in “modern Jewish bistro” by being strictly Kosher. There will be a GREAT many items on the menu for “all but the most Glatt” of Kosher guests. My years of demographic study and insight into all of the UJA/federation studies ratified what we had assumed to be true with regard to the small percentage of families who are kosher outside the home. It is a very slender percentage."

Jewish haimish cooking goes Tribeca

Disappointing that it's not kosher.

Allergies

I normally don't use mixes for baking but because of the potential for cross-contamination I used a gluten free vegan brownie mix when accommodating a guest recently. I don't recall the name of the brand but I found it in my local health food store in the gluten-free section. It was kosher and met all of the requirements above. I also made sure to bake it before I got to any of the other baking I did that day.

making wacky cake with buttermilk

I've made it with rice milk , almond milk, and soy milk. It comes out great. I haven't tried regular milk or buttermilk but I don't see why it wouldn't come out just fine.

Shipping food to a summer place

That's great to hear! Did you order from the Noah's Ark in NJ?
It all sounds like a great arrangement and I will definitely keep it in mind.

Sacred Chow

Thank you! A veggie friend and I will be in NY next week and may give it a try.

Sacred Chow

AdinaA, do they focus on any type of vegan food (indian, chinese)? Can you recommend any dishes?

My Sister's Flight from Newark, NJ to Dublin, Ireland.... Kosher Lessons Learned

When I flew through there a couple of months ago there were no sandwiches in the machine- only some Israeli chocolate and other snacks.

Can I do batter-dipped stuffed squash flowers for Friday night?

I've always been curious about cooking with squash blossoms. Can you eat the whole thing? What do you do with the stem? Sounds like a delicious dish.
I've found that leaving fried dishes very lightly covered on a warm surface keeps them crispy enough for the shabbat table. It works better in the summer than in the winter, when the lag time is so much longer.

Shabbat afternoon snacks- any ideas?

These antipasto platters both look great. thank you for posting the links.
I'm going with
chumus
tehina
eggplant salad modified from www.nytimes.com/2008/09/04/health/nutrition/04recipehealth.html
cut up vegetables, baby carrots
an assortment of crackers - I noticed in the supermarket that many crackers were Dairy. Had to search carefully. Couldn't find hechshered pita chips. No WH or TJ nearby
roasted almonds
dried fruit
cherries
one other fruit
mint iced tea
Thanks all for the advice!

Shabbat afternoon snacks- any ideas?

OOh I like the mezze idea! Can I serve them with crackers rather than pita? I want to avoid bread. Any crackers you recommend?

Shabbat afternoon snacks- any ideas?

Some friends from out of town are stopping by on Shabbat afternoon. Because of their schedule, it will be a couple hours after lunch but before seudah shlishit, so I want to serve some pareve snacks that are fresh, healthy, not too heavy, just right for a summer day outdoors. Any ideas?

Kosher in Mystic, CT

When we went to Mystic a couple years ago, we brought all of our food with us. Unfortunately there were no kosher restaurants nearby. Still had a lovely time- nice place to visit.

"Kosher Pork" in the New Yorker

An amusing but disconcerting piece:

Homemade Pareve Ice Cream

Thanks. I've looked for Callebaut on line, and have only seen it in absurdly large quantities. Occasionally if I want to splurge on nice pareve chocolate to use in desserts I'll buy some Alprose or some of those other heckshered European bars and melt them (though that's not too cost effective either).

Homemade Pareve Ice Cream

Where do you buy the Callebaut chocolate? I've had a hard time finding good pareve chocolate. Thanks!

Looking for another side dish/app

I really like this eggplant dish by Yotam Ottolenghi, an Israeli chef with popular (non-kosher) take-away stores in the UK and two very nice cookbooks. This is roasted eggplant marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and cilantro, and served with tahini sauce.

Why do we stand for it?

Interesting discussion about bad meals and experiences in (non-kosher) restaurants on the Manhattan board http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/787839 . Made me feel like perhaps this isn't just a kosher restaurant issue. And that we should continue to vote with our feet.
Although, buried in the thread is a scathing review of Noah's Ark on Grand Street. The poster said "I'll stick with the traif from now on."

Why do we stand for it?

Ditto, AdinaA! When I started reading this thread, the second floor place in San Francisco immediately came to mind. I suppose the place survives on tourists. I would rather depend on a supermarket than patronize a restaurant with poor service and quality. I'll try a place once when I travel, but won't go back if it's not up to par.

Breakfast meeting near Greenwich, CT train station

Looking for a place to meet a client, preferably walking distance to the Greenwich train station. Can be relatively casual or even a coffee place. Thanks!
