Tallula's Chapel Hill, NC - interesting experience

We ate there about a month ago, and I think we had the same guy. We chatted with him a bit and luckily he went away after he got TOO annoying. But it was definitely above-average amount of conversation time with a waiter. But, the food was really great, so I came away with a pleasant experience. Basically I could be happy eating just their delicious bread and whatever that yummy dipping sauce is.

Fresh tortillas in Durham

Second this. They make 'em hot and fresh for you, and so good that it's hard to resist eating them plain.

Butternut Squash Restaurant - Chapel Hill NC?

The Thanksgiving is part of the Triangle Vegetarian Society T'giving feast -- is the food going to be made by Butternut Squash or is it going to be the brought in from the main TVS seating at Parizade?

You mention the Pepsi sponsorship -- I thought that was odd too, and then I started noticing it in many of the local restaurant ads in the Independent. I assume Pepsi is giving them all a break on their soda prices if they put the logo on their ads and in their signs.

Maybe when/if they ever finish the University Marketplace across the street, it'll send more business their way.

Durham, NC: Any news on old Pao Lim/new Kimono restaurant?

My husband came home with the new menu yesterday. My favorite dishes have returned! This is great news.

Durham, NC - Seeking decent pizza

I really like Pops' backdoor. Great crust and an incredible topping selection. I've also solidly enjoyed the pizza at Brixx (Meadowmont, off 54, outskirts of Chapel Hill).

Durham, NC: Any news on old Pao Lim/new Kimono restaurant?

The Indy had a piece on the change in this week's issue. The didn't state any reasons though, only that it appears the owner of Pao Lim is the one turning it into a Japanese place.

I'm bummed. The Crispy Tofu at Pao Lim was one of my favorite dishes.

Darnit, looks like Timberwood is full for 2008. Wow, last year we signed up with them in March and it wasn't yet full. Good for them, but I guess I'm going to be looking for another one!

Starlu in Durham closing

Yeah, that makes sense. But it had that neat "Restaurant * Starlu" sign on the front of the building that I always admired when it was lit up at night. It's a shame to see it go, it always looked classy when I'd drive past there. I wonder if they're selling the sign? I'd buy the star!

Starlu in Durham closing

Never tried it as the menu never looked very interesting to me, but I don't get why people don't like the location. Maybe it just seems convenient to me because it's near my neighborhood, but this is a pretty busy part of town--with well-visited places like Target and the other big stores in that area, and a fairly well-to-do demographic in the Hope Valley area. With the new University Marketplace (http://www.hvna.org/university-market...) that they have planned for the complex that houses Sitar, this area could really become perfect for a place like Starlu.

Tonali: Nuevo Mexican in Durham. A Gem!

Just ducking in to say that I just got back from my first visit to Tonali and it was outstanding. Great, prompt service (even a free refill on the mango agua fresca) and outstanding food. I had the cauliflower and mushroom tacos and my husband had the chile relleno. Both were delicious-- the relleno had a nice complex flavor that was very well-balanaced. The tacos were great, nice strong mushroom flavor. We got full after just those relatively small dishes, so didn't have room to try the chocolate cake with banana flambe. Next time!

Triangle Veg Society Thanksgiving feast

http://www.trianglevegsociety.org/tha...

...is now taking reservations. I went to last year's event and it was a true feast -- I left feeling very satisfied, stuffed to the gills, yet still wanting to eat more of the incredible food. You can check out the planned menu at the link above. Anybody else been to the feast or is planning to go this year?

(I'm not associated with the event in any way except as an excited attendee.)

Raleigh CSAs?

We subscribed to Timberwood Organics this year. We're loving it--this week's box (we get a 1/2 share) had two baby watermelons, long beans, an eggplant, red peppers, and a bag of gorgeous tomatoes. Here's a photo of some of last week's cherry tomatoes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/l-dogg/9... And they deliver to our door.

Trader Joe's Opening in the Triangle???

Cool, when I was going to Aldi they didn't have stuff like soy milk! And I'm always on the lookout for frozen lunch-type things.

Trader Joe's Opening in the Triangle???

Is this the same Aldi chain that I used to occasionally shop at in the Midwest several years ago? If so, it was an odd place. Only took cash, had an odd selection of off-brand and scattered 'name' brand stuff, mostly food (not 'gourmet' in the slightest) and always a few random bargain items like patio furniture or electronics, all sort of stacked on the floor and on industrial-looking shelves. You did your own bagging (they had those bright orange and yellow bags, and I think you had to pay for them?) and the cashiers sat on chairs. That was 5 years ago or so, so it's probably very different now--has TJ's always owned them?

Is Queen of Sheba Doomed? (Chapel Hill)

Ate at QoS last night, and asked when they'd be moving to Durham. She said that they had planned to move, but that the deal for the new place fell through. So now they are looking for a place again. She also said that they have only 4 weeks left at the current location, so better go there while you can! I put my email on a list she is keeping, to be notified when and where they move. She also mentioned that they will be having a party near the closing date, with bands and food and such.

NC Regional Snacks?

I've bought some great boiled peanuts from various stands and shops along the highway on the way to the Outer Banks from the Triangle. Once in a while they're not soft enough for my taste, but usually they're just right.

Twisted Noodle open in Durham

Went to Twisted Noodles on Thursday night. Got there around 6:30ish, there were maybe four other tables seated. Lovely inside, I really like how they've decorated the place. We were tended to promptly--got menus right away and drink orders were taken promptly. The servers were very friendly as well.

We had the battered tofu and veggie appetizer (called something like "vegan delight") and it was wonderful: a nice light batter around pieces of tofu and fry-cut sweet potatoes with a delicious dipping sauce. An excellent appetizer and the best dish of the night (in my opinion). For the entree, I had the pad see eww and my husband had the prig king. The pad see eww was your basic pad see eww--pretty standard, with wide noodles and chinese broccoli in a soy sauce-based sauce. It was good, but I don't really know how that dish could 'wow' at all. My husband's prig king was green beans and tofu (either dish can be ordered with your favorite protein) in a very flavorful and fragrant red sauce. He really enjoyed his entree a great deal.

By the time we were finished, the restaurant had filled up, including one group of 14 people that predictably slowed things down somewhat. It did take them awhile to take away the empty dishes, and we never did get water or condiments (neither were needed, so it didn't matter).
We will certainly make this one of our regular restaurants--great prices (if somewhat smaller portion sizes) and great food. A welcome addition to the area!

Triangle-area CSAs

Ha, I was kind of scratching my head about Chow Penguin's comment about there not being parking at the Farmer's Market, since there is ample parking at the Durham Downtown Farmers Market. I didn't even know about a Duke lunchtime market, that makes more sense.
