Any strawberries yet? (DTW)

I'm assuming they'll be early this year, so has anyone seen Michigan strawberries yet?

Best brand of "slice and bake" cookies?

I think I usually get between 3-4 dozen, but my spoonfuls are on the small side.

Best brand of "slice and bake" cookies?

I can beat 4 ingredients - here's one with only 3:

I think this recipe was on the label of a can of Eagle milk, years ago. I couldn't find it on their website now, though.

1 6oz pkg chocolate bits
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (like Eagle)
2 C graham cracker crumbs

Heat the milk & chocolate bits in a double boiler, and stir until melted. (You can also do this part in the microwave if you're careful). Stir in the graham cracker crumbs. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto baking sheet. Bake 8-10 min at 350F
I sometimes add an optional 4th ingredient like nuts, dried cherries or peanut butter or cinnamon chips if I want to get fancy.

As for the purchased slice-and-bake, to me they all have a little bit of an artificial taste, which is more obvious with the plain sugar cookies. With more stuff added, that taste gets masked. There's an oatmeal-cranberry-walnut break and bake dough that I like, but I've only seen it in private label brands, like Target, Meijer and Spartan (private label in the midwest).

New thread for discontinued products

There was another flavor of the snack sticks, Butter Herb I think, that disappeared even before the Honey Wheat. I found my last box of these at a Big Lots, and you know when something shows up there, it's the end of the line.

As long as we're being mad at Kellogg's/Keebler: I'd also like them to bring back Hydrox, even if just for a month or so like they did a couple years ago. The ones I stockpiled then are not aging well in storage.

South Haven, MI recommendations

Well, not a restaurant or bar but Sherman's ice cream is definitely worth a stop. Haven't been in a couple years but still have fond memories of the sampler I got with 6 mini scoops of deliciousness.

Crepes in the D? [Livonia, MI area]

There's Hepburn's Crepe & Coffee at the Village of Rochester Hills. I haven't been to this location but I liked what I had at their old (Shelby Twp) location. This would be easily accessible without much walking if that is an issue. Not sure if they have table service here though, might be self-serve.

Good Girls go to Paris is in Midtown on E Kirby (next to DIA) and (according to their website) now in Grosse Pointe too.

Good food near IMAX theater on Mound rd. in Sterling Heights? [DTW]

(For future reference): La Saj is about 3 miles east on M59, by Lakeside mall. Palm Palace is in the old La Shish building, but it's further, about 4.5 miles (from Mound). The Italian place on Mound N of M59 is Filippa's. I'd also throw in a couple old-school Italian places, both on Van Dyke N of 22 mile - Da Francesco's and Di Fratelli's.

DTW: Cloverleaf Pizza "spokes" are gone

Now I'm confused, as a new Cloverleaf pizza just opened at Hayes & 22 mile (same strip as Polish Market). From a marketing standpoint, it does seem a little strange to dump the Cloverleaf name, with decades of history & reputation attached to it, for the generic-sounding "Detroit Style Pizza". Maybe there are rights/trademark issues we don't know about?

Foodie Detroit! need your recs...

Great recommendations. I'd add Green's and Bate's to the slider list. And Bath City Bistro in Mt Clemens also has feather bowling.

cheap-ish restaurant near Detroit Country Day in Farmington Hills (DTW)

Oops - it's Cafe Kabob, not Kabob Grille.

cheap-ish restaurant near Detroit Country Day in Farmington Hills (DTW)

I was gonna say the same - any middle eastern restaurant will have lots of veggie choices; I would suggest Kabob Grille at 10 mile & Evergreen, or Pineland at 12 mile & Farmington. If you're not picky about atmosphere, there's always Mr Kabob at 12 Mile & Coolidge, inside the gas station - it's owned by the same people as Kabob Grille.

Trenary Toast [Trenary, Michigan]

I tried a bag of this a couple years ago when I saw it at a grocery store in Mackinaw City. I don't really get the appeal. Maybe it has to be something you grow up with? To me it just seemed like really really dry cinnamon toast. OTOH, I had it around for 5-6 months and I don't think it was any different at the end of that time than when I bought it.

Where to buy duck meat in Metro-Detroit

I thought I'd seen it at Peacock Poultry in Troy, but their website lists it as something that has to be ordered in advance. Might be worth checking there anyway.

DTW - Where to get shad roe

Check Monahan's in AA - think I've seen it there in the past.

Best of Detroit report in Real Detroit Weekly your thoughts? LINK

Ok, there are probably a couple choices I wouldn't argue too much with - Detroit Bagel, Ray's Ice Cream. But their categories either seem laughably broad or so specific that they seemed designed to only have one possible choice. Did they really need best Spanish AND best tapas? Best Brazilian steakhouse (what are there, 2 in the area)? Best creperie? How about best Sushi, best Sushi Chef, best Japanese (where they describe the sushi) AND best Sushi specialty roll? Also (this may be in the printed version, but I didn't see it online) locations for these places would be helpful; I've never heard of several of these places.

"Best Italian - Andiamo" puts in question every other place mentioned on the list.

Is Tilsiter cheese available anywhere? [Detroit area]

You might also try stores specializing in European or specifically German imports. Nitsche's meat, in Shelby Township, is one. I'm sure there are others in the metro area (without having to go to Frankenmuth). I see a lot of German products at the Polish Market (Hamtramck, Troy, Macomb twp) but I'm talking about jarred sauerkraut/pickles/jam type products; never looked at their cheese section, sorry.

Fried Bologna sandwiches in metro Detroit

I go to the source...Yale Bologna Festival, held the last weekend in July. Thick slab, on an ordinary bun, add your own condiments and sauerkraut. Pretty much satisfies my bologna craving for the next year. If you go, the fries from the truck there are good too.

Detroit and Michigan traditions?

When I was a kid I always used to ask for a Sanders caramel cake for my birthday. After their bankruptcy/reorganization problems in the 90s the caramel frosting texture just wasn't the same. I didn't realize they'd stopped making it altogether. I've tried several other caramel cakes, even tried making it myself, but still haven't come close to the one I remember.

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

Found some yesterday at the Walmart at 23 Mile & M53 in Shelby Twp. I still think your best bet is going to be a Walmart somewhere; unfortunately, due to their semi-useless website inventory checker, you'll have to rely on personal visits and reports of sightings.

Aloha Hawaiian BBQ- Dearborn [DTW]

Don't get your hopes up. The address listed (18900 Mich Ave) in the Yellow Pages is for Fairlane mall, and there's no such restaurant shown now on the mall website. Maybe a short-lived food court experiment?

There used to be a small cafe in Clinton Township on Groesbeck called Chef Ramone that had Hawaiian-ish food. That's closed, but he does catering now (check out the "luau" menu:
www.chefraymoneinc.com

Would love to see a place in the area with plate-lunch type food.

Seriously Good BBQ all from scratch in New Baltimore DTW

They'll be opening their 2nd location in March - 23 Mile bet Van Dyke & Mound, Shelby Township.

truffle oil/salt [dtw]

There are a couple places around now that specialize in just oils & vinegars; I think these all carry some kind of truffle oil, and they're good about letting you taste:

Old World Olive Press, locations in Plymouth & Birmingham www.oldworldolivepress.com
Giuseppe's Oils & Vinegars, at Partridge Creek mall www.giuseppesoils.com

Personally, I find it hard to believe that someone can pay the rent selling nothing but oil & vinegar, but I wish them all the best.

When do we stop calling it "Greektown"? (DTW)

Well there's a giant 100-year old Greek Orthodox church at the end of the block so I'm guessing yes there was a Greek community in that area.

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

I'm not quite sure how you're searching the Walmart website. When I search for this, it comes up with 13 stores in a 50-mile radius of AA, 6 of which say "in stock" or "limited stock". The closest one to Ann Arbor is Saline which has "limited stock". Of course, it also says this is not carried in the Ypsilanti store, and didn't someone find it there, so who knows how accurate their inventory info is. You might try picking a "home store" on the website if you didn't have one and try the search again??

Buffalo Cheddar Popcorn in Ann Arbor?

Well, their website lists chains that carry their products, and a couple of the chains have searchable store inventory online, so for example (without leaving the couch)...

Walgreens - not that flavor
CVS - no info
Bed Bath & Beyond - no info
Meijer - no info
Walmart - shows your flavor is carried in Saline among other stores. Not sure how you feel about the evil empire

In general grocery stores that either let you do your shopping online or let you create shopping lists will have their inventory online, though you have to register; so for instance you can check Busch's or Whole Foods inventory this way.
ps, just checked Busch's - not that flavor (and I'm not signed up at Whole Foods, sorry)

Hope this helps

Panache 447 Plymouth-Needs sooooooooooo much work [DTW]

Aw, I liked Dinersty. I thought it was the best of the Chinese restaurants in the immediate area when I lived nearby.
And if we get into the wayback machine, before Dinersty it was a Cloverdale ice cream place.

DTW - Page tangerines?

Reminded of these by the story in the freep food section today:

http://www.freep.com/article/20120112/FEATURES02/201120398

Has anyone seen Page tangerines in their local market yet? Would prefer NE Oakland/NW Macomb county areas but will travel if necessary.

Anything good near Briarwood Mall? (Ann Arbor)

You might check out Zingerman's Bakehouse. They're south of I-94 in a no-atmosphere industrial park. Kind of like a Zingerman's lite - limited menu, less expensive. Pre-made sandwiches & salads, variety of baked goods, daily specials, plus you can watch them make bread. Cons: counter service only, limited amount of seating iirc; and you'll probably spend more than you intend when you smell whatever they're baking.
