Francesinha Portuguese "sandwich"

Thanks for the info, lambretta76. I am looking forward to getting to Alfama, albeit it being a bit pricey. I STILL haven't made it to Newark since my trip to Portugal in December. It's not really francesinha weather (as it's an ideal meat-laden winter meal), but I'm not sure I can wait that long. :)

Francesinha Portuguese "sandwich"

Looking for a place in Manhattan that might serve this. Any ideas?

Francesinha - where can I find the best?

Since my trip to Porto, Portugal this last December, I am on the hunt for another francesinha, the wonderful specialty from Porto which might loosely be called a sandwich. I'm willing to travel to Newark or wherever. I'd like to invite some friends and co-workers for an evening out, so a place that is jovial and appealing would be great. If they have Bock, even better, but the francesinha is the key.

A new Spanish restaurant in Sunnyside, seemingly

I'm confused. Is this meant to be SPANISH food, or is this erroneously labeled Spanish when it really means Latin American? Since moving to NYC 4 years ago, I have never understood, nor appreciated the fact that New Yorkers ignorantly refer to all Latin Americans as "Spanish".

LES on a Friday evening....pre-bar hopping dinner

My plan is to check out Nurse Bettie, a bar, on Norfolk btwn Delancey and Rivington. Before, me and a friend would like to grab some decent, but casual dinner. Ethnic or bistroesque would be great. Suggestions please!

Looking for Vietnamese Beer

Specifically Bia Saigon, Biere Larue or Tiger. Does anyone know of a liquor store in Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn that might sell one of these?

Indigo in Astoria

Heading here tonight for a dinner with friends. Can't seem to find a menu online, and not familiar with their offerings. Would be interested in finding out about salads, fish and chicken dishes.

Zen Palate - Union Sq. need advice

Planning to take my neice, sister and another friend to Zen Palate tomorrow night (Sat) for my neice's birthday. I've looked at the "fine dining" menu and it looks good, but I see they don't take reservations. Is it worth 4 or 5 people showing up at 7 or 8 and expecting to get a table? Or are we better off in the cafe?

Korean Sunnyside - Tofu Natural or BBQ on 43rd?

The BBQ place on 43rd & Qns Blvd does have table top grills, which is why I was expecting to see some cooking. Now I know there's probably a minimum of BBQ dishes to be ordered if I want to see that, based on a post above. I'm sure I'll be back at some point and repost.

Thanks all!

Peruvian - papas a la huancaina`

I'm looking for a place in either Bklyn or Queens with great Peruvian food. I'm especially interested in a place that does papas a la huancaina. I haven't had it in a few years and am craving!

Korean Sunnyside - Tofu Natural or BBQ on 43rd?

We went to the bbq place on Queens Blvd and 43rd. I was pleased, although the bbq dish my friend ordered came out on a hot plate. I was sort of anticipating watching something cooked at our table. Guess I'm just not experienced enough to know what to order. Overall a good experience and I do plan to go back as it's a mere 3 blks from my apt. I do love that people I know in Brooklyn are jealous of the good eatin within walking distance of my place. :)

takeout coffee in Jackson heights

I live in Sunnyside, but I second the recommendation on any of the Colombian places. There's plenty of those in my nabe as well. If he wants coffee black, ask for cafe solo. I have a couple of places here I stop into once in awhile when I don't want sbux.

Korean Sunnyside - Tofu Natural or BBQ on 43rd?

Taking some friends to dinner tonight in my nabe, and Korean was specifically requested. The reviews for TN sound mixed, and I imagine they'd like a variety of options, so is the BBQ restaurant on Queens Blvd and 43rd worth a visit? If not either of those places, any other suggestions within a 6 block radius?

Brunch near Brooklyn Civil Court on Adams Street

I'm beeing admitted to the bar tomorrow and the ceremony is tomorrow morning. I'm looking for a nice place for brunch nearby, within walking distance preferred.

Woodside/Sunnyside suggestions? (eating out AND delivery)

I personally prefer Turkish Grill on Queens Blvd & 42nd for Turkish, although Hemsin is great too. I like Thai Malay Cafe on Skillman and 51st, especially the mango chicken. Check out The Rose for a great traditional Irish breakfast. You can get decent fish and chips at The Butcher Block on Fridays and also at PJ Horgans (also a great Shepherd's Pie). I tried the new Foxy's Diner last weekend for brunch and liked the Greek spin on eggs florentine (it had feta, but no English muffin). I don't care for La Flor, but do love Mole and the taco truck at Qns Blvd & 41st for the best Mexican. Welcome to diversity in eatin!

Pre-Theater Dining Sat Night

Going to see The Pirate Queen on Sat evening. Would like some recommendations for dinner before the show. We are 2 women, 30s and 40s, looking for someplace that isn't a "family" restaurant, but isn't so swanky that we have to dress to the nines.

Gonji Kitchen

I have plans tonight to dine with a friend at Gonji (Gongi?) Kitchen on llen near Delancy. I've no idea what to expect. Anyone have insight?

Breakfast Lover in Queens

Ok, I am actually the OP, now posting under a new name. I'm surprised my post from 10 months ago got so many recent responses. So, here's my update...

I have become a regular weekend bruncher at The Rose as I do appreciate an authentic well-made Irish breakfast, and Sunnyside is the place for it. The Irish Breakfast at The Rose is better than others I've had in Manhattan, so if you're a local, be proud!

I did go to the Copper Kettle once and had eggs florentine, not really their specialty I guess. You could tell they used frozen spinach - not good. But, I do plan to go back and try something else. I like the family atmosphere of both places and if my parents were still around I'd definitely take them to either The Rose or The Copper Kettle.

The Coffee Shop at 40th & QB - can't remember if this is the exact name, but it has a blue awning and says "Mexican Restaurant", but also says they serve Irish breakfast. Hmmm...went in one morning and ordered blueberry pancakes. Never saw anything so atrocious in my life. I was served plain dry pancakes with a gian load of canned blueberry pie filling on top. On top of that the waitress was biotchy. This is the one time in my life I have actually COMPLAINED about a dish, and I don't mean "um, it's a bit undercooked, would you mind cooking it a bit more" type of complaint, I mean I really felt compelled to tell the waitress that canned blueberry pie filling was inappropriate. She was more than irritated. I got plain pancakes instead. Awful. Ate about half and never went back.

Yesterday I went into The Cup and was very pleasently surprised. A little gimmicky, but still cool. I'd never ventured in before because I have learned to fear "diners" in NY- the quality is always so poor. But, I had an excellent eggs florentine here and thought the home fries were fantastic. The coffee was a bit weak, but tolerable. Don't think they need to serve in such huge cups, though, the coffee just gets cold too fast. I'd be curious to hear what people think of the dinner items at this place. I'll definitely be going back.
