Upscale Restaurant in Long Beach, CA

I had a really good experience at Utopia in Long Beach...recommended it to another chow foodie and they were really pleased with it as well.

Vegetarian Restaurants

I've been to Cru a few times...ususally don't order off the raw half of them menu but their food it pretty tastey. Nice to have a whole menu of vegetarian options. Good curry. However, not being vegan, I recommend that you pass on the vegan chocolate cake and head down the street for some kick ass gelato.

Brewery in LA?

I like Lucky Baldwin's because they include Craftsmen Beer on their menu which is a local Pasadena brew. HOPEFULLY we'll be seeing more of them in the near future, but for now, they're hard to come by.

Chocolate fix, chocolate cake?

The Chocolate Bunt Cake at the Alcove.

Just had it on Saturday night and it didn't let me down. I usually don't really enjoy cakes and tend to lean towards the more dense side of chocolate, but this cake is actually what cake should be...fantastic.

Parents meeting parents in Oxnard/Ventura

I agree that Jonathan's is a good option but please make a reservation as it is very popular with locals. Great atmosphere.
One place I've never tried but looks like it could be good is Watermark On Main.
Good luck!

Best chips and salsa?

I love the salsa verde at Mexico City in Los Feliz and the chipotle salsa is tastey as well. They home make their chips which are always good.
Also love the chips and salsa at Taco Beach in Long Beach.

Birthday dinner for 9 in the Pasadena area

Oh! And if you're going downtown I'm sure you could arrange ahead of time something with The Wood Spoon. They're super. Brazilian. You won't get a private room but the food will be fantastic. Definately want to let them know you're coming though. Will be fine for a 5 year old.

Birthday dinner for 9 in the Pasadena area

I've heard nothing but good things about Palate and have been told that the atmosphere is very casual...should be fine for a 5 year old.
El Portal for Yucatecan in Pasadena is fantastic and sounds like the perfect atmosphere for your party.
Good luck.

Long Beach recs?

I went to Utopia once and had a really fantastic meal. Only been there once, so I cannot vouch for their consistancy...
Meal was great, decent wine list and the dessert was heaven.

Barley with Winter Greens Pesto

First of all...props to todeinotaton. Just because bears eat raw meat doesn't mean you shouldn't serve a bloody piece of cow (said the vegetarian) and just because horses eat grass doesn't mean you shouldn't serve something green.

Just made this dish tonight and finished my first bowl. Loved it!

Things I did differently:

1. Cooked the barley in vegetable broth for extra flavor and omitted the salt.
2. Used red wine vinager - worked just fine.
3. Used cashews instead of almonds - super.
4. Could not justify buying walnut oil for this dish so I used olive oil and it was still lovely.
5. Garnished with a little parm. and found it to be the last piece of the puzzle.

I'm looking forward to trying the rest of it for lunch tomorrow when it has had a chance to sit overnight. Should be even better!

La Canada

Bashan's in Montrose is very good.
El Sol (also in Montrose) is tastey.
Star Cafe has REALLY good calzones.
Min's Kitchen (Thai) in LC is pretty good although the consensus on chowhound seems to be that their portions have dwindled and prices have doubled.

Those are some options without getting on the freeway.
School system is definately worth it. I went to high school at LCHS and it was very hard...but I was very prepared for college and had no academic adjusting to do. It was the level of school work I was already used to.

Good luck.

Mole

If you make it up the coast a bit...Maria Bonita in Ventura has awesome mole sauces. They have a lot of depth and flavor. Definately worth the drive for good Oaxacan. The people that run the place are super nice and would be happy to help you out.

Best 3 Downtown Restaurants?

Don't know that they take reservations...however...dinner opens at 6pm (which is about when I've gotten there to eat before seeing a show) and it hasn't been a problem.

Best 3 Downtown Restaurants?

I recommend the Wood Spoon. It's more low-key but teenage friendly. Brazilian.
I went to it before the LA Opera on a recommendation I got here on Chowhound. Loved it and go back all the time.

Dinner Recs between Signal Hill & Silver Lake?

The Wood Spoon -- downtown on 9th and Main. It's Brazilian; they cook great fish and always have a few veggie options. I suggest that whatever the owner/chef suggests, you order. Always works out well for me.

bakeries between la and santa barbara?

Pending on where this drive starts in LA, Euro Pane Bakery on Colorado - just east of Lake (in Pasadena) is great. Love the chocolate hazelnut tarts and I go to sleep everynight wishing I could wake up to one of their ginger scones. Nice bread too...good ciabatta.

Best Brewpubs / Microbreweries?

I've never been to Good Microbrew in Silverlake, but I drive by it all the time and it always has a decent amount of people in it.
I believe The Library Bar - downtown (6th and Flower?) have a good menu.
The Red Lion - also in Silverlake - is a proper German beer garden and is fantastic. Make sure you go all the way upstairs. And it fills up quickly with locals.

Food around USC

bacaro's l.a. -- on hoover and union. it's a little wine bar with pretty good food and cheese. the pour is a little small for the price so I don't frequent it, but it has a great atmosphere, nice staff and a happy hour special for small plates.

good cheap dinner downtown?

I'm going to the opera in a few weeks with a friend...problem being we spent all our spare change on tickets. Any good recommendations on where we could go for dinner - all gussied up - eat well and still be able to leave a tip?
(coming from Los Feliz/Silverlake)

Thanks!

Unfamiliar Territory

Please. For the love of good food. Do not go to The Alcove. They try and seduce you with the great patio full of trees to make you think you're in The Jungle Book...but you're still in LA paying way too much for bad food.

Just across the street is one of my favorite places in Los Feliz: Tropicalia. I do admit the name isn't an eye catcher but the delicious, generous portions (leftovers for dinner), great prices and enough spice that your boss won't smell the sangria on your breath makes it worth a try. http://www.tropicaliabraziliangrill.com/

If you are willing to go a little further North on Hillhurst, I recommend Cafe Los Feliz ...across from Albertsons. And a block North of Albertsons is Mexico City. Great chips and salsa.

El Greco Cafe on Vermont is also tasty if you've got a hummus craving.
