A Four-Year-Old reviews... The French Laundry

Late to the party, but this kid and another one who reviewed Animal in L.A. were the only ones who weren't pictured crying at some point. I'm not a major kid lover but making a four-year-old cry to get page hits is not a good thing to me.

I will agree with Lyla, though, that the French Laundry's ginger ale is AMAZING. When we went in 2005 we brought two teetotaler friends and they raved about it. Even though Mr. Mandalay and I were imbibing major amounts of wine we were drinking the ginger ale as a palate cleanser between courses. And yes, the bathroom is very elegant. :D

Milk with my breakfast eggs, water while I smugly laugh at the caffeine addicts. ;)

What's in your slow cooker today

Super easy--slice up three large onions (white or yellow work best), pour in a stick of melted butter, salt and pepper to taste, cook on low for 14 hours. The onions turn a deep, dark brown and are absolutely delicious.

Ideas for a pint and a half of heavy cream?

Also if there isn't any carrageenan in it, a staple of the vast majority of commercial heavy creams.

Recommend Grocery Tote Bag

I make a joke that I've never had to pay for a reusable shopping bag. I have three from the local grocery store, a Baggu from Serious Eats that I keep in my purse, one from Whole Foods which once held some of my co-op stuff, and two ENORMOUS cloth bags from Williams-Sonom (you can get them if you get a lot of stuff or something big in one of their stores. They're surprisingly sturdy, can hold a ton and has long enough hands so I can sling it over my shoulder. If you're buying, I highly recommend Baggu. Cheap and really durable.

Is it discrimination?

Life isn't fair. Get over it. Tony Roma's is mediocre at best anyway.

I ate too much of it once...

Doritos. I was nine. Haven't eaten them since. It's been thirty-seven years.

Rude or Polite: Another Thanksgiving Family Debate.

Know how they know you're a vegan?

You don't have to broadcast your food choices. If you choose not to eat certain foods no one is entitled to an explanation about why you don't eat them. Period.

British Michelin Star Chefs Bully Reviewer

Bullying. You keep on using that word. I do not think you know what it means.

From le Wiki, emphasis mine:

Bullying may be defined as the activity of REPEATED aggressive behavior intended to hurt another person, physically or mentally. Bullying is characterized by an individual behaving in a certain way to gain power over another person.

If you post criticism in a public place, be prepared for a backlash. Right, wrong, whatever, be prepared. That is all.

Ignoring Chowhound Advice

Here's an idea--how about not recommending anyplace where you need a reservation? I go up to New York quite a bit and as a result I get asked about "where should we eat in New York?" a lot. My answers always are:

Shake Shake
Dinosaur BBQ (I know reservations are recommended but I've always gotten in there without them)
John's pizzeria on Bleecker Street
Faicco's Pork Store to grab Italian specials for a picnic
Masala Times
Hill Country BBQ
Sarge's Deli

I've been doing this for years and every time the traveler comes back raving about the food.

Anything good and casual around the Beacon Theater?

My husband and I are going to a concert at the Beacon Theater on 9/15, the first night of our week up there. It's been decades since I've been to a show there and I was wondering if there's anything good up there where we can come in jeans and sneakers (you don't dress up for Finnish symphonic metal!) or even a good food cart--thanks in advance!

2012 Confessions

I frigging love McDonald's double Quarter Pounder.

My local supermarket (Farm Fresh, related to Albertson's) carries a store brand of frozen pizza that is mind-blowing. Super-thin crust, spicy sauce and pepperoni ... and even when it's not on sale a pie is five bucks. Culinary Circle, check their website.

I can also eat the crap out of Pepperidge Farms cakes. PF makes red velvet cake now. I destroyed a whole one by myself on my last birthday.

Ditto for Trader Joe's strawberry shortcake.

I can mainline Whole Paycheck's orange cream soda.

Amazingly I have not developed diabetes yet.

NYT: "A Mathematical Challenge to Obesity"

It's the overproduction of PROCESSED food in the U.S. that's driving the obesity "epidemic." Obesity is the result of the overproduction of insulin, NOT consuming fat, but since "fat = unhealthy" has been drilled into heads for forty years as the result of a biased study people load up on low-fat processed crap and think they're eating healthy. Advertise "low fat!" on the box or bag and people will load up. Never mind that it's usually loaded with sugar, even the "savory" stuff.

Day Care Lunch: Really Need Some Help

Considering what your average toddler will put into his or her mouth if given a chance I don't think "boredom" is an issue here. Is she suddenly refusing to eat anything? Are there certain foods she turns down? I'll admit not being familiar with daycare protocol but I imagine stuff like that does get reported back to you. If you know what she likes, give it to her even if--horrors!--it might be the same thing every day for a while.

Deferring Costco Membership Renewal

My local Costco made a big deal about no longer having to use coupons and getting the pricing anyway, but the books still come in the mail. Noble trees sacrificing their lives for naught ... :D

As for the OP's question, I don't see the point of it. You're going to rejoin anyway and pay the $55. I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do other than postpone the inevitable.

@viperlush--just the Costco Amex.
