Lantana, Fitzrovia, London

agreed , but thats why i strategically said antipodean !
As a genuine question -- are australian and kiwi coffees or the preparation of the coffee that different ?
Regarding the original point , in my limited opinion my favourite coffee has been had at flat white , but my best experiences over time have been at monmouth . I love that theres no room to swing a cat , the waitresses that serve you are always genuinely friendly even though theyre fighting to find you a space to sit and theres a queue out the door .You share your tiny table with other people that somehow are always lovely , but maybe having my daughter in tow breeds friendliness amongst people .Its also the 1st place that opened my eyes (and mouth and nose ) to the fact that is it possible to have a decent coffee in england .

Flat White in soho is an antipodean coffee shop so that doesnt make sense !

well after your recommendation how could i order anything but an eccles cake . It was lovely , packed with fruit , tasty , flaky pastry , but also of considerable size . My flat white each time was excellent and the service was just perfect , especially as my 2 year old daughter received superior treatment than ricky gervais . He really looked quite perturbed .

Until recently i lived 30 secs walk from Lantana and when it opened i wanted desperately to love it , as theres nothing better than a great coffee shop on your doorstep , but i just didnt get it ! I found it a case of 'emperors new clothes' , nowhere near the same world as monmouth , flat white , or even the new 'ginger and white' (hampstead) .
Nobody describes food like you Limster , i love your reviews , so im almost hesitant to give my contrary view , but i went 3 or 4 times , and never had a great coffee once !

Its in a hotel who's exterior is 60's bland and on the face of it just doesnt exude enthusiasm .However ive read a few extremely positive things about this restaurant that has somehow never hit my radar . The essentially seafood menu reads beautifully and with their 50% off deal is certainly not expensive .
But , before i give it a shot i'd like to know your views ?

London Michelin lunch deals

L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon also do 3 courses for 25 pounds both sat and sun but i cannot comment as havent tried it .
Also the Chez bruce and family restaurants also have set deals for sunday lunch but again the price goes up and i persoanlly feel you get more and better choice on the saturday .

London Michelin lunch deals

certainly -- Foliage has a very good one , its roughly 29 or so pounds for 4 courses or around 35 with 2 glasses of wine too . Im not saying foliage is anything like top of the tree , and of late there are certainly reports its not what it was , but its still great value for on the weekend .(sat and sun)
The Ledbury has a brilliant deal and it applies to saturdays .
3 course for £24.50 and it really is excellent . Indeed , on a different day the a la carte menu we had (evening) was at best only as good , and in 3 out of the 4 diners opinion worse than the lunch menu enjoyed a couple of months apart . We since went back for lunch and again it was terrific . Of course this is a tiny sample size so im not making sweeping statements just giving our views on the given day .
Surprisingly for a 'trendy' place Nobu's lunch deals apply to saturday too . Its around 30 pounds for their bento box that includes a selection of their typical dishes that have been copied around the world including the black cod , rock shrimp tempura with ponzu sauce etc etc .
Chez bruce and its 2 other similar 'suburban' restaurants do good lunch deals on a sat where they are a little more expensive than mon-fri but still significantly less than the evening menu, but one still gets to choose from an a la carte list which for me is always a massive plus .

London Michelin lunch deals

this subject has been much discussed , and recently .
They ALL do lunch deals (except the odd very trendy establishment --the only ones i can think of being Locanda Locatelli , Zuma and Roka ) .

Personally i love the restaurants that offer the dinner menu at lunchtime at a significantly reduced price . However these are few and far between . The only ones i know are Zafferano , and the Chez bruce trio . Foliage used to offer it but they've recently changed their menus slightly so although they look similar the lunch time menu doesnt have some of the more expensive ingredients . I would love to know of anymore ?

the easy answer is pretty much every single upper end restaurant has a 'lunch menu' .
Its easier to mention the ones that dont - Locanda Locatelli , Zuma and roka are the only ones i can think of that dont .

Clos Maggiore

I think when you consider its peak tourist location its easily one of the better spots around . The conservatory room in particular is really quite romantic and i think the food is good .

Desperately trying to find traditional pub food in London

the grenadier's mews location and rickety , old school decor is almost what one would hope to see in the country but its slap in the middle of the city , fantastic . It oozes character ,and yes ,most customers are monied american businessmen but maybe said american businessmen know a good thing when they find it ! On the other hand it doesnt have quite the same atmosphere as it used to , the infamous bloody mary is not upto the grade since the past landlord left but most importantly -- the food is poor (but to be honest thats always been the case ) . I still love the pub but never to eat in . Its usually a great place for an early sharpener before the bargain priced lunch menus at marcus wareing or zafferano .

Bocca di Lupo, Soho, London

we did thorougly enjoy a meal at theo randall but my goodness do you know that youre eating in a hotel dining room , so dull and the food wasnt quite in the upper echelons to compensate . I appreciate in theory locanda is in a hotel too , but in practice it feels far removed (till you need the bathroom).
Id love to get across to the river cafe but a) we want to go on to a bar/club afterwards , hence better to be close to west end and b) i want to have a drink and hence me driving all the way to hammersmith is a no no . Yes i could taxi it all over but im a northerner , it would burn my inner sole to be so ostentatious !

Bocca di Lupo, Soho, London

My wife has been out of action for quite a few months on the restaurant front due to babies and i want to take her to a cracking italian on sat night . Shes been to Zafferano lots of times so i booked us a table at Locanda Locatelli but from what i can gather Bocca di lupa is more the italian of the moment . Id like to know your thoughts and whether bocca di lupa is upto the standard or better than River cafe , Zafferano or Locanda locatelli . I dont expect the restaurant to look as upscale as its significantly cheaper but is the quality of the food as good ?

and it must be the northerner is me but i love how bursting and chunky each dumpling is at hakkasan .

My London list

I totally agree Hakkasan is the best dim sum ive had in London and surprisingly reasonably priced (unlike going for dinner where the good quality dishes on offer do not compare with the stratospheric prices but its always packed for dinner, and has been for many years now , so i suppose they can charge what they want) . And yet i frequent royal china far more often , i think it must be that on a sunday lunch sometimes we just want a simple affair whereas Hakkasan requires wearing ones 'sunday best ' and praying our 2 year old behaves .

Hampstead/Golders Green or Putney/Chiswick

My point is that if theres one excellent restaurant in Wandsworth there should be at least one in Hampstead in my humble opinion.

as you are very knowledgeable on nw3 have you been to the little french restaurant practially next door to the flask pub ,? the cage or something like that . It looks a cute , little room and certainly not expensive with a simple yet attractive menu but i never see anyone eating there .

i do thoroughly believe the bull and last is excellent in its field -- a combination of solid quality food , lovely staff , a 'proper' pint and a pub that still looks like a pub . However its a fair old walk from hampstead even across the stunning heath .

I think youve done a great job there at exhaustively covering the better restaurants and pubs of hampstead but to be blunt all those choices fit into the mid level mediocrity division ! Hampstead is gorgeous and must be amongst the wealthiest spots in the world but there is nothing of the level other neighbourhood areas have eg chez bruce in wandsworth common

Hampstead is a truly wonderful place but in regards to culinary delights -forget it ! seriously its awful .
My question to chowhounds is why is this the case ?

Northern Vietnamese restaurants in London

i think cay tre does specialise in northern vietnamese food . One of their specials is a fantastic monkfish dish that they cook at your table . i think its called cha ca la vong made famous from the name of the same street in hanoi , and tastes almost as good !

Saturday night dinner around Holborn

dont get me wrong it is no zafferano , locanda locatelli or river cafe , but it is not in their price league , or even close . Youd could do antipasta , pasta and secondi each with a bottle of wine for around 60 pounds all in .
For me it just makes a change for a simple restaurant to do pasta well .

Vietnamese places on Kingsland Road, Hackney, London

i agree that some of the dishes at song que are average at best . We try most of the other vietnamese restaurants once or twice but we always go back to song que and the reason is my wife needs her fix of pho and in our humble opinion it is easily the best in london . We genuinely prefer the vast array of quality dishes at either cay tre (10 min walk from kingsland road) or viet grill (very good , but not upto cay tre quality ) , however their respective pho's are boring to the point that when we eat at cay tre we never have the pho . But the likes of cha ca la vong more than make up for it .
We love pho and sometimes my wife will settle for nothingelse !
