Wild New Dish at The Hall @ Palihouse

ate dinner here last night and someone at the table (actually 2 people!!) ordered this dish. pretty amazing in presentation and the flavors are rich and not cloying at all. a very, very good dish, one you find in paris or new york, rarely here in LA. the rest of the food at the table was amazing as well-pates, tartare, a nice salmon dish, fresh desserts. overall, one of the best meals i have had in a long while.

i had remembered reading about this dish a while ago and wanted to report back on it. high marks and recommended.

Best Baguette on the West Side

not sure where you of the op live, but robin's nest at the end of north venice blvd (next to james' beach) gets bread bar baguettes and other assorted goodies shipped in daily. the baguettes are amazing...especially with smuggled foie gras on top.

VENICE BEACH!!

wow. you bash stroh's but rush out (first thing!!) to C&O? C&O is responsible for the worst meal of my life in a restaurant. not even close. A1 sauce on chicken they call "marsala." and the garlic balls? dirt.

for dessert, by the way to the OP, go to Jin Patisserie, some of the finest chocolates and pastries in the city. on abbot kinney, across from stroh's.

Lucky Baldwin's-Pasadena: Lousy

i know it's a pub. i have been to a few. i want my beer to taste good (especially when you are having a beer festival) and i want the place to not smell of rotting frat house. unpretentious does not mean dirty, divey does not mean foul, and a soccer on tv with volume would be better than some 80's love duet.

Lucky Baldwin's-Pasadena: Lousy

have been going here for years for the belgian beer festival, as well as other times, and have tried not to see the slow decline of the place but tonight was just too much. The place smells like a frat house (it is plain distracting and foul), the lines for tap beers are not cleaned often enough which leads to metallicy tasting beers (although this could be the glassware), the food is okay at best, and the music is just plain rotten (a decent jukebox that is sprinkled with nice stuff but too much silence and too much lovey dovey). the service is the only thing not worth slamming-the staff is always pretty nice and knowledgable. i will try the sierra madre location because a beer bar with great belgians is tough to find in la, but i will avoid the pasadena location from now on....

Terrible Indian -- Westside -- Sad

i totally understand from where you are coming, i just disagree with a blanket statement that poo poo's almost everything. you said so yourself-YOUR expectations. that is all i am saying. i am commenting on quality (of course i can taste the difference in foods), but to say that something is bad because it does not meet your expectations is much different from something being truly bad (like whacking out a veggie curry like you said). i find it really hard to believe that you have been to every west side indian restaurant and even harder to believe that not even one of them has come relatively close to pleasing you. we live in the 2nd largest city in the country. i think the common denominaor here is you. i am having a hard time making the point without sounding mean or trite, i hope you don't think i am attacking you.

Terrible Indian -- Westside -- Sad

i am not saying the OP should settle in any way, finding the best is the goal of any search. but what is "most authentic" may not be the best and vice versa. i understand the urge to get the real thing, but the reality is that that rarely exists outside of the sphere in which the real thing actually exists. wow. that sounds incredible existential, which i guess is okay in the food world, but i hope you understand what i am saying. to put it more bluntly, quit whining about it and find something you like, even if you have to get your mother's recipes and make it yourself or fly to sf or drive to artesia. also, finding a restaurant where you want to go twice a week and be able to afford it and walk to it and have the waiter give you a massage and the ingredients be flown in daily and have parking and be spicy (but not too spicy!!!) and great atmosphere....you get the idea-is a bit much to ask. this whole thread just made me scratch my head.

it does not sound like you will ever be happy. i will NEVER find my mother's spaghetti and meatballs at a restaurant. she is not italian or a professional chef, it is not authentic or even gourmet. but it is mine. stop worrying about things being "authentic,"-that is a relative term to each individual on certain levels. you have to change how you are grading your experience.

Favorite Spots to Walk In or sit at the Bar/Counter/Communal Table

you should try wilson in culver city. perfect to sit at the bar and let them take care of you. the scallop dish they usually have (with shaved truffles) is heavenly.

Sourdough - where to find the real thing in LA?

not sure from which bakery they come, but the sourdough boules at robin's nest in venice (on n. venice blvd) are amazing. soft, sour, and perfect crust.

Good Butcher in Culver City (or west of there)

Does anyone know of a good butcher where I can pick up pork butts (nice marbly ones) in this area? I am trying to avoid going to Huntington Meats because of traffic...thanks

Any authentic MEXICAN eats around VENICE?

fiesta brava on rose (at 5th st on the north side of the street, little shopping center) is great for tacos and the carnitas plate is devine. great neighborhood spot, byo (liquor store next door, get some mexi beer to wash down the hot salsa) and family owned/operated...

Fiesta Brava on Rose Ave-best mexi west of 405?

I have been eating here for a while and it just hit me last night that mexi does not get any better than this west of the 405, possibly even west of downtown. Dingy lighting, bad tables, BYO, but man oh man, the carnitas is great, the carne asada is as good as any local truck, and the salsa is fresh and spicy. Plus, the owners/cooks are super friendly and always there. Definately worth a visit to the 500 block of Rose (between Main and Lincoln) if you are a westsider...
