Ranch Dressing, what is up with that?
Ketchup is worse. You can eat it with french fries only!
Think of the mainstream alternatives: thousand island, italian, french, caesar. Most salad dressings are disgusting. It's it really a mystery why ranch came out ahead?
I always get vinegarette. But I think homemade ranch (the runny kind) is great with carrot/celery sticks.
Best Ice Cream Brand
Haagan Daz. They make only the most basic flavors but all are good. Ben and Jerry's has a well-made ice cream, but their combinations make no sense and are distracting. I've tried one flavor of Graeters but wasn't impressed.
How to kill a crab?
Boiling, ripping apart, microwaving, stabbing. I think the time differences between all these methods are negligible. All these methods kill the crab within seconds.
It needs to be noted that just because a crab is moving doesn't mean it's alive. Just as when you decapitate a live chicken, it takes a while for reflex reactions to stop.
veal stock. useless without the bone marrow?
Is it possible to make good veal stock with bones stripped of it's marrow, or is marrow basically where all the flavor come from?
LA why do you vex me so?
That sort of is the city's fault. We should have an extensive public transit system by now. And the subway should have never allowed a small group of people to block it decades ago. But unless, you plan of taking the bus (which takes forever), I'd recommend renting a car.
Affordable caviar from any store in the L.A. area
That's still good. $22.50 an ounce.
Caviar was supposed to be the more affordable alternative. Since Beluga was banned, I think american caviar producers have taken advantage of Russian market weakness and have been fleecing consumers. I just don't understand the prices nowadays for American caviar. It's outrageous. $720 an ounce for california sustainable caviar at Tsar Nicolai?!
French raw milk cheese -what are the best that are imported?
Sad to hear of it getting even more restrictive. A few years ago, I thought they would be more open to loosening restrictions with the explosion of artisanal american cheeses.
Affordable caviar from any store in the L.A. area
Checking out their websites, Costco sells "Osetra" for $55/oz. $50/oz for "Siberian"
Bevmo sells the same brand of Osetra for $60/oz.
But Bevmo also sells " Beluga" for $60/oz (as well as "sevruga" $29/oz)
Affordable caviar from any store in the L.A. area
I was watching this Frasier episode about the Caviar black-market, so I've been craving it all week. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try Bevmo today.
Costco is selling for real cheap on their site. Around $50 per ounce for Bulgarian white sturgeon and Florida Siberian.
French raw milk cheese -what are the best that are imported?
Roquefort is delicious everywhere, but I don't think I've ever tasted an American Camembert or french import that I've like as in France.
French raw milk cheese -what are the best that are imported?
Certain raw milk cheese can't be imported in the US because they have to be aged over 60 days, so it's been said that there's a big difference in quality between the cheeses in France, some that peak at 30 days, and those imported in the US (after it's peak).
But what raw milk cheeses actually PEAK aged after 60 days? In other words, what raw milk cheeses can you get here that are as close to the quality if it were in France?
12 Reasons to Drive to San Gabriel
Does every thread to kawtow to finding NYC-style chinese food? In the SGV, no less? That's like looking for an Olive Garden in Italy.
What exactly is your definition of "baking"?
Anything that you would sell at a school bake-sale is baking. No mac'n'cheese allowed.
What exactly is your definition of "baking"?
I hate the word "baking" But to me, anything with flour, is baked. So baked beans or baked potatoes are misnomers.
Vent - macaron vs. macaroon
It's just ignorance. Nothing to be too upset about. What really pisses me off is the use of "french macaroons" I hate that.
"American people, they don't know real good sushi"
The California roll is the best of all the "american states" rolls. And it's what familiarized first-time americans to sushi. Don't bash the roll that helped popularize sushi in the US!
REVIEW w/ pics: Road Trip from LA to SF with Food Stops Along the Way
There's a great pizza place called giant manhattan pizza in pismo beach. Excellent, closest to NY style you can get in central coast. There's also Jocko's for excellent steak. that's in Nipomo, about 15 minutes before you get up to Pismo Beach.
You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...
...a real patisserie in Los Angeles. There's Jin and that's pretty much it.
Need Advice - Friend Visiting From L.A.
No, no no. Do NOT take him to a jewish deli. Those are done better in LA. What you can't get in LA is that really high-end dining experience. I would recommend Per Se and Le Bernardin, restaurants of those ranks. And if he likes Mastros then he'll love Peter Luger.

Per Se

Le Bernardin

Bourdain vs. Deen
Watching Deen's show is like watching a 30 minute promotion on how to get diabetes. I think these people should be criticized.
Vietnamese in Orange County
That's ridiculous. A 50c upcharge to have the beef on the side when practically every other restaurant in Little Saigon would do that free without question?
What is the best Indian restaurant in LA?
You're allowed negativity. I just think you're wrong. LA stands with any city when it comes to great ethnic food. In fact, there are a number cuisines that you simply cannot get anywhere else at such a high level. And by my experience, it's a rather large number.
French fries fried in horse fat. Where in Paris?
I'm in the 3rd arr. Yes, it's not going to be part of my daily eating habits, so I'm not worried about health concerns.
And I do prefer beef tallow over duck fat which is why I'm curious about horse fat. thanks for all the suggestions. will try rue cadet next weekend.
French fries fried in horse fat. Where in Paris?
I've had the duck fat fries, which are delicious, but I can get that more readily. People swear by the superiority of traditional belgian fries done long ago in horse fat, which is why I'd like to compare it to duck fat.
French fries fried in horse fat. Where in Paris?
Is it possible to get horse fat french fries somewhere in Paris? Or at least somewhere I can buy horse fat and make my own? I'd like to try it before I leave.
Is meat losing its allure?
I think the anti-meat trend is dying out now that carbs are turning out to be more dangerous than previously thought.
Typical American breakfast foods you don't enjoy at breakfast?
Food, in general, is not good at breakfast.
