Artisanal, Hidden Gems, Hole in the wall Providence, RI

If I found myself in the strip mall where Garden Grill is located, I'd much prefer to go next door to Rasoi Indian restaurant. They have an excellent vegan buffet on Saturday for around $10pp, or plenty of veggie options off the menu.

New London and / or Mystic .....Where do locals eat????

I've said it before on CH and I'll say it again: Pita Spot in Mystic is outstanding for authentic Lebanese food at very moderate prices. But don't just take my word for it. Look it up here and on Trip Advisor and Yelp and you'll see almost nothing but passionate raves.

90+ ?

OK, skeptics & cynics. I've now tried 8 or 9 of their offerings and can honestly say that I'm totally impressed with their quality and value. I've paid $10 for most and $15 for several (I haven't tried their $20+ bottles), and have enjoyed them all. The biggest surprise was the California chardonnay (Lot 40) which sounded like a flabby oak-bomb from the description, but turned out to be a lean, elegant, food-friendly chard. Also, the Oregon Pinot Noir (Lot 28)
was outstanding.

btw, I'm not a novice, nor am I overly influenced by rating numbers.

I really look forward to hearing from anyone else who has tried them.

weg: the Rhone was a bit too oaked for my taste and I still haven't found the riesling.

90+ ?

Did you try the Malbec? I think it's outstanding. Can't believe I paid just $10 for it.
I'll try the Rhone next. My store doesn't have the riesling, but I'll ask them to get it.

Sally's Apizza is obviously better than Pepe's and Modern

Sorry, but this is a ridiculous post. There's no "obvious" when it comes to food tastes, especially pizza.

90+ ?

A store in my town in Rhode Island is featuring wines from 90+, a "virtual winery" based in Boston.
What they're doing looks interesting. I found quite a bit on the web.

Wondering if anyone's tried their offerings and if anything's really outstanding. Thanks.

Orchard with Activities

We LOVE Lapsley Orchards on scenic rt. 169 in Pomfret. They offer free hay rides, freshly pressed cider, baked goods produce & pumpkins for sale. We drive up from Westerly once or twice a year. Columbus Day weekend is their busiest time, though not as crazy as Clyde's.

Providence Pizza

Glad to learn that Nice Slice is still there. I worked part-time in Prov. 5 years ago and they were
on my regular lunch circuit. Excellent NY style pizza.

Dining Options near Crowne Plaza, Warwick, RI

You're about a mile and a half from Haruki on rt. 5. It's my favorite sushi in the state and they have a full Japanese menu as well. A high protein meal should help your bridge game!

Is Torrontes the next Malbec?

WS already gave the Crios Torrontes 90 points, for whatever that's worth. I've paid about $11 or $12. Agree with David that it's an interesting and enjoyable bottle and good value.

Planning a Coastal Drive, Soliciting Suggestions

To clarify your confusion about the location of Matunuck Oyster Bar: South Kingstown is the name of the actual town. There are numerous villages within this rather large area: including Matunuck, East Matunuck and Wakefield, which is the downtown commercial section. I worked in SK for 23 years and could name them all, but I'll spare you.
I now work part time in East Lyme and agree with the Ugh for Main St. Grille. There's been nothing but mediocrity in that space for years.

Dry Reisling rec's?

Tried it and liked it. On a par with Pacific Rim. At $10-$12, these are good values. Thanks.

Mid-Cape Summer 2011: One guy's opinions

Another thumbs up for BFH. We visit Brewster for a few days every May and had our 4th dinner at the Fish House last spring. We had hoped to try Fin, but it was closed that evening. Happy to say our dinner was just as good as always. My wife, who's vegetarian had a pasta dish that she called one of the best ever and my fish entree was as good as previous dinners. Of course, this was still offseason and not as hectic, but we detected no decline at all.

Who here drinks non-alcoholic beer?

No one's mentioned drug interactions. Some prescription medications warn against alcohol, so a beer lover might temporarily drink NA beer.

Discontinued at Trader Joe's (started 6/19/2011) [old]

2 items I miss: cucumber wonton rolls and Manitaropita--mushrooms and wine sauce in phyllo pastry.

Dry Reisling rec's?

Any specifics for dry versions? Especially those that are distributed nationally.

Vacation in Mystic, on to Block Island, looking for recommendations

Have you tried searching Mystic on this board? There are many recent threads.
Sounds like a nice vacation for landlocked folks. Enjoy!

Summer Beers 2011

Thanks for the great post. I was about to buy a 6-pack of the mayflower (I've really enjoyed several of their offerings), but I'll steer clear.

The Pita Spot: Delicious Middle Eastern in Mystic 06/2011

So glad you enjoyed it! We consider ourselves lucky to be just 15 min. away from such a great establishment. btw, that garlic puree is incredible. I've just found out that it's called "toum" in Lebanon. Even though we don't order chicken, we always ask for some of it to spread on pita.

Pita Spot, Mystic?

I've lived in this area almost 40 years, and have never tried Kitchen Little--just not willing to wait for a table. An acquaintance recently told me she was totally unimpressed with it.

Was back at Pita Spot last night for the umpteenth time. A friend treated us to return a favor. We shared 6 or 7 small dishes plus one dessert. Bill came to a bit over $50. Everything was superb, as always. Glad you're planning to give it a try. If you haven't already, check out the reviews on Trip Advisor. Look forward to hearing your opinion.

6/11 Mystic Area Great Food?

If you like middle eastern cuisine, Pita Spot is outstanding, and inexpensive. They're open 3 meals a day, but breakfast is typical American.

Cape Cod Restaurant Week 2011

Had a superb meal, as expected, at Brewster Fish House a few nights ago. They recently expanded, adding about 4 new tables. The sous chef is now the head chef. The Restaurant Week special offered app, entree, dessert and coffee for $35. All the choices are regular menu items. Everything was first rate. Given the quality, this is an unbeatable bargain.

The place is always busy, so it's impossible to determine whether Rest. Week has an effect on their business.

Best Fresh Fish Source in RI?

I've been enjoying McQuade's hot-smoked salmon for years. Unfortunately, the price has
gotten pretty steep ($15 per lb), but they often run specials at $13).

Trader Joe's frozen wild salmon is very good, and a few dollars cheaper than just about anywhere else.

manners at wineries

The best model for proper wine tasting etiquette is presented by Miles (Paul Giamatti) in Sideways.

Suggestions for Mystic or Surrounding Area

My very favorite restaurant in the region is Pita Spot in Mystic (a block from the Inn at Mystic on rt. 1.) It's Lebanese and is open for 3 meals a day. Among their specialties are grilled chicken dishes. If your husband doesn't want a highly spiced dish, they're very accommodating. Oh, and the place is incredibly friendly, and inexpensive. Their menu is online as are dozens of rave reviews on Trip Advisor and other review sites.

Seafood Sausage

TJ's seems to have them sporadically. I tried them once and was not impressed. They were
bland and flavorless. Very disappointing. Will keep WF in mind, because the idea is appealing.

What's the sushi scene in Providence?

Guess you haven't read very carefully. This thread is not about the best sushi and no one is arguing that supermarket sushi is the best. Several of us have written "pretty good". That hardly means best.

Rick Lewis, RIP

I posted this a few days ago on the Wine Board and thought it might be of interest to Southern New England readers:

Got an email message from the Madison Wine Shop in Madison, CT. that its long-time owner, Rick Lewis passed away a few weeks ago. My wife and I used to make the 50 min. trip from southwestern Rhode Island to Madison quite often to go to the Madison Arts Cinema, usually on a Saturday afternoon. The wine store is right across the street and Rick was famous for his Saturday wine tastings. He always had at least 6 bottles open and whether there was one customer or half a dozen, he would give generous pours and expound on each wine. There was absolutely no pressure to buy, but there was always one or more outstanding values and I usually left with at least 3 bottles.

Rick was passionate about wine and very opinionated. He despised Robert Parker and his point system and he hated overly oaked wines. He could be irascible at times, but he was not a snob--he'd be as enthusiastic about a $6.00 bottle as one 5 times the price. The store's web site:
http://www.rickspicks.com/ is one of the better ones around and the twice-a-year editorial newsletter is really fun to read.

We don't get over there much anymore since we see now most of our indy and foreign films much closer to home, but I'll always remember the Saturday tastings at MWS. Would love to hear stories from other customers of Rick Lewis.
