Mr. Roboto's Profile
Xmas Tamales!
If you don't mind the large size tamales, you might want to try Maria's Bakery in El Monte:
4743 Peck Rd
El Monte, CA
Tel: 626-444-8109
Cross-street:is Lower Azusa Rd., next to CVS.
Suka Pinakurat?
It's used as a condiment at the dining table. People like to dip their food (especially deep fried or grilled) in it.
It originates from Iligan City in the Philippines which is overwhelmingly Cebuano speaking. The root word "kurat" in the vernacular means a (sudden) surprise. Use it sparingly.
Fortune Dumplings (f.k.a. Dumpling 10053) Opens In Monterey Park
Ahhh, kind of like a semi-homemade yakisoba.
It's probably one of those dishes of the "Don't knock it till you've tried it!" genre.
Help making Chicha Morada
¡Ojalá!
It would be even more "auténtico" if she uses quince (membrillo) instead of the apple.
Help making Chicha Morada
You're going about it all wrong, you don't boil any citrus in preparing Chicha Morada, that's why it turned out bitter. I've never heard of oranges as an ingredient of CM, only lime (or lemon) and that's at the end when the drink is served along with sugar, just like serving iced tea.
Oven Lechon W/Skin
You need to brine the meat overnight in the refrigerator and use a convection oven. Make sure you dry the skin before roasting.
Try roasting at 350F, 40 minutes per pound. Baste the skin with the drippings every 10-15 minutes during the final hour. Increase temperature to 450F and continuing roasting for another 1/2 hour until skin is golden (start checking at 20 minutes).
Ideally, you should be using meat from a young pig.
"Mystery" restaurant in Monterey Park above HK Market
You're correct that Tin Tin is on Garvey & Jackson, but it's in Rosemead next to Big Saver Foods.
Grand Opening At Gourmet Island in Alhambra
"My lunch dish was OK but nothing noteworthy."
Uuuh, would you minding sharing with us what you ordered? And maybe how the same dish tasted or might be prepared in another establishment that you find more acceptable?
Awesome Eatery Opens In Monterey Park (And I'm Not Referring to Fortune Dumplings)
I only brought it up because the addresses on Valley Blvd around New Ave always mess me up and I'm sure others too.. West of New it's East Valley Blvd in Alhambra, while east of New it's West Valley Blvd in San Gabriel with a different numbering sequence. Likewise south of the 10, if driving on Garvey Ave, west of New is Monterey Park & east of New is Rosemead with the same numbering attributes.
A colleague of mine ended up at the wrong restaurant a few years ago, he was confused between San Gabriel Valley & the City of San Gabriel (the meeting place). He referred to anything east of the 710 as San Gabriel.

That should be 1308 EAST Valley Blvd (west of New Ave) in Alhambra.

Isn't this the address for Omar's Xinjiang Halal Restaurant (新疆風味小吃)???

looking for "chewy" gelato
This sounds like Turkish Ice Cream (dondurma). The real chewy one is "maraş dondurması," they use salep flour (ground from the roots of a wild orchid) as one of the ingredients.

What is this vegetable?
In French it's called "AILLET" also known here in California as "GREEN GARLIC." It's just immature garlic that's not been allowed to reach the bulb stage. Add them to omelettes and scrambled eggs, you can substitute it for scallions or leeks in many recipes.

Monterey Palace Set To Open Branch in San Gabriel--Will San Gabriel Retaliate?
My recollection of the parade was that it started in MP and ended in Alhambra, which upset the city of MP because people congregated and spent more at the parade terminus.
Japanese Culture and Food of East Los Angeles 1950s/60s and Today
Hmmm, you might be thinking of Otomisan Restaurant (née Otomi Cafe), 1 block east of the Gold Line's Soto Station, it's been around since 1956.

Pre-Marinated Korean BBQ - Supermarket Recs in San Gabriel Valley?
The Square Supermarket
8150 Garvey Ave. (SW corner of Garvey & San Gabriel)
Rosemead, CA 91770
This is the only Asian market I know of in the West SGV with pre-marinated Korean meats although I have yet to try them, they have other Korean food items too. I mainly buy produce there. The parking lot is packed on the weekends, so if possible try to go mid-week.
On a side note there's a conveyor belt sushi place in the same strip mall called Caga Sushi, it's always a trip to watch the inquisitive faces of Hispanics when they read the sign.
Where to find dry Sichuan chicken with peppers?
I think I've seen it written as 重慶辣子雞 (Chóngqìng làzǐ jī) on menus. Maybe the OP can print the characters and show them at a Sichuan restaurant. Just a thought.
Anyone ever buy a Whole Roast Duck in Chinatown? ISO advice and recommendations
Your grandpa is correct. I've bough roast ducks from various places and brought them to work, pot-lucks, birthday parties, etc. I get the most positive feedback for the ducks from Monterey Palace (利苑海鮮酒家), PRE and POST remodel.

Looking for "Pearl Noodle" or a good substitute
It's a rice noodle. In Singapore & Malaysia it's known as Niao Chu Hoon (Hokkien) or Lǎo Shǔ Fěn (Mandarin) - 老鼠粉. And yes, it does resemble a rat tail.
In HK, I think they call it Lou Syu Fan and also Lau Su Fun (Hakka).
Coming into San Gabriel, Valley & Del Mar, From the 487\489 BUS
Mr. Taster, if you're referring to COM TAM THUAN KIEU (120 E Valley Blvd @ Del Mar), that place is very good & cheap. Highly recommended.
Chinese Deboned Chicken Stuffed with Sticky Rice?
What about deboned duck stuffed with glutinous rice (糯米鴨)? In Cantonese - noh mai ngap, and I believe in Hakka it's noh mi aap. I think it's even tastier.
BTW, did you write in English or Chinese to these restaurants?
the lowly meatloaf sandwich
I ran out of ketchup once and substituted bottled BBQ sauce and it turned out great. Since then, I've made BBQ sauce a permanent substitution for ketchup in my meatloaf recipe.
best quality ribeye under $12/lb?
I just bought some CHOICE rib-eye steaks a couple of days ago at Hows Market in San Marino at $5.99/lb, I believe today (3/22, Tues) is the last day at this price.
Seville Oranges or Bigarade Oranges
Yes, also known as "naranja amarga," "naranja andaluza," "naranja cachorreña," "naranja bigarade," "naranja de Sevilla," and "naranja cajera."
Singapore Style Fried Rice Noodle (星洲炒米粉) ... the most bastardized dish in all of SGV?
From my SE Asia travels, the curried version is unheard of in Singapore and the ketchup/chili sauce version is actually typical of Malaysia especially in Penang and is a little saucy. In Singapore, 星洲炒米粉 is actually a rather plain dish with just bee hoon (aka mǐfěn / 米粉) stir-fried with dark soy sauce, egg, usually with some bean sprouts, a little char siew or even luncheon meat (the budget version) and is quite dry.
From my research, the curry variant originally came from the cha chaan tengs (茶餐厅) in Hong Kong.
Good tonkatsu in Vegas?

Use arborio rice and really good home made chicken stock for risotto? I don't.
Let's just call it a Poor Man's Risotto or Risotto alla Povera and be done with it, OK? ;)
Geez, this is almost as pointless as debating sauce vs gravy with someone from South Hackensack, New Jersey.
Indonesian Festival 2010 - July 31
Was there a similar one in 2009? If so, does anyone have comments on it?
Also, for those not wanting to deal with parking, the locale (Indonesian Consulate General) is next to the Wilshire/Normandie stop of the Purple Line.
