Good tonkatsu in Vegas?
I get my tonkotsu fix (pork always, chicken never!) at Osaka. They have a few locations in town, I eat at the one off Eastern Ave in Henderson. They have a lunch special that's a great price ($7.95) and VERY filling!
L&L Hawaiian chain is okay, but not my first choice at all.
Fuji on Trop and Pecos was always a good standby, but it's been a few years since i've eaten there. The nicest people run it!
Michael's Gourmet Room in the South Point Hotel/Casino
My visits (yes, I got a second one on 11/29, lucky me!) are akin to Max Jacobson's take on Michael's.
I think John Curtas is iffy on reviews. He seems to enjoy what he says a bit too much, and tries really hard to be edgy, hip and yes..a uuber-smartass. It's not that he's always wrong, but I tend to disagree with his reviews, more that agree.
Michael's Gourmet Room in the South Point Hotel/Casino
Thanks, Dave!
I really really loved my experience at Michael's. Yes, i'd say it's very fair to say most who eat there are getting comped. I also just found out my MIL got -another- comp for Michael's for November, so another dinner will be had. I'm SOOOO excited, too!
I saw that they serve fresh stone crab, and New England lobster, flown in fresh daily. (so they told me) I watched the waiters dismantle and shell a lobster complete, in about 2 minutes there. No muss, no fuss for the diner, at all. I'm really wanting that, this time!
As far as it being crowded, by 7pm, the place was 75% full. They had 2 decently large groups of 8 or more as well.
Michael's Gourmet Room in the South Point Hotel/Casino
I just had dinner at Michael's last night. It has now beat out B&B for the best meal i've ever had. Also, the most expensive, but i'll mention more on that, later.
This is OLD, old school. European waiters with napkins on their arm, there is a waiter and 2 bussers for 2 tables. VERY very attentive service, and many foods are prepared tableside. I won't say it's fair to use "classy brothel" as a descriptor, but then again..I've never been to a brothel, much less a classy one. Yes, the dominant color is a rich claret, but not hard on the eyes at all. It's dripping in opulance, the stained glass ceeling is gorgeous.
I ordered the creamed mushrooms for an appetizer, the Dover Sole for an entree, and Triamisu cake for dessert. The mushrooms were tich and decadent, cooked tableside. The Dover Sole was -outstanding- and prepared in a brown butter sauce. Deboned at the table with a bit of ceremony, too! It was juicy, flaky and only a hint of fishiness, but reminded me alot of king crab. I loved it
Dessert wasen't fantastic, but decent. It was in the icy side, I was so full, it didn't really matter.
Dinner for 2, with a cocktail each was $360. I was there with my MIL on a comp. No entree under $54 there. A few over $100.
A great experience, but one I'm not sure will happen again for me. I'm glad I tried it!
Best Onion Rings?
A quick note: I tried the "new" steakhouse onion rings from Arby's. They were HORRIBLE. Too thick, greasy, and just unappealing. Ate one, threw the rest out. The search continues.....
Man Vs Food
I realy -like- Adam on MvF. He's engaging, charming and really knows how to talk up a place. When me and my MIL watch the show, we laugh at many of the challenges, but wish we could visit some of the places he features.
Yeah, we've joked around- "I hope he dosen't keel over in the middle of one of those challenges!" or "Hope the Travel Channel has good insurance!" but, we realise it's actually serious. I think that for many people, the show is a vicarious thrill.
I'll admit, i've got a bit of a crush on him. He's got a great sense of humor, and seems like a very nice guy. I'd feel horrible and VERY guilty if by watching his show, i'm furthering his decline, health-wise. He's too good of a host to lose!
Maybe Andrew Zimmern isn't so bad after all?
I will -always- in my mind's eye nowsee Andew Zimmern wearing a short-pants suit, big floppy bow and wearing a blonde corkscrew wig, thanks to you!! *LOL*
That made me laugh waayyy too much today!
Did Enoteca San Marco become Otto?
ReallY!? I work at The Venetian, and this is the first i've heard of this! I hope we get a memo when it happens!
Monta Noodle House
I've become addicted to Monta ramen, having been there 5-6 times so far. They are awesome! Their tonkotsku is excellent, (i've been to Daikokuya in LA, and I think Monta is better, flavor-wise) but the thing that makes me VERY happy is the nitamago addition to the ramen- a marinated soft-boiled egg. (actually ranging between soft and hard boiled) I -crave- this so much!
The chefs from Raku come over and hang out after their shift, all the time! Yes, this place is super-small, and it gets really packed at times.
Off the strip "Italian"
Bootlegger's all the way. Why? Open 24/7, food's great and when the entertainment's on, it's usually very good.
You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...
I'm coming to LA next weekend for my Mom's b-day, when's dinner served??*lol* I promise to sing and dance for my supper ^__^
Yes, the last time I was in the bakery in Alpine Village (in April) they had Linzer torte. Looked divine! I forget about Berolina, and I used to work in Montrose many years ago! They- should- have it.

You would have a hard time finding _________in Los Angeles...
THIS, a million times, this. Living in Vegas, i've gotten addicted to frozen custard at Sheridan's. My mom who's in Burbank is very jealous of my glowing praise of frozen custard, and would love nothing more than to try it finally.
Maybe 31 Flavors has it out for -any- competition in iced treat products in So Cal?? Is there any Hawaiian shave ice in LA either?? Hmmm, the mind boggles...
LA is missing a smorgasbord, great German food, but the frozen custard is the worst travesty they are denied.
Catfish Alley, Las Vegas
Sorry about that, in not responding any sooner! Life's thrown me for a bit of a loop and checking out new places to eat hasen't been on my mind. (dealing with 101+ degree weather with a broken air-conditioner leaves one with little appetite..)
I'm not a huge fan of catfish, but I will give this a try. Anyone try the new CW Buns place in the same shopping center yet? I have Friday off, might give them a try then.
Best Onion Rings?
At one time, waaaaaayyy back when it was still operational, Quark's Bar at the Star Trek Experience did great onion rings. I miss them sooo much!
I adore onion rings, but have yet to find stellar ones in LV. Buffalo Wild Wings is my go-to place for them in town these days. I'm also waiting with baited breath to hear from others what they think LV has to offer on them!

Best Italian American On The Strip?
The Bootlegger on S Las Vegas Blvd (really south, past the airport) is excellent, open 24/7 and if you go on the right night, great entertainment. (if you like that)
They have awesome garlic knots!
They are in the Outlet Mall, south of the airport
Bachi Burger
I can see what you're saying. There -are- kinks to work out, and the #1 thing is the timing on the food. This is the kitchen's fault, not the servers. The first time I ate there, yes the wait was what you descibed. I've now eaten there 5 times, and the speed has gotten better each time. Last Friday night at 11:30pm, I was actually served in the fastest time, in less than 10 minutes from order placed, to on the table, AND the fries were delivered together with the burger.
You felt the truffle fries cloying? Different strokes, I guess. My order was so good, and that would be the last word i'd use to decribe them. Rich, yes.
I'm with you, tho..I would never travel to Summerlin for what I felt was so-so food. I'd wait a good 6 months for the speed/kinks to be worked out. They ARE getting there, tho!
Shrimp/Scallop Scampi - question re method
Thanks everyone for these tips on scampi! I have been craving them for some time, and decided today to make them at home. Cost is soooo much less, and I am going to make it very garlicky!
I've also read you can add some bread crumbs at the end, but I don't think i'm going that route. Simple is best, so many times. Garlic, olive oil and butter, lemon and white wine..I hope it all turns out as good as i've been dreaming about!
Do you like eating in bed? [moved from General Chowhounding board]
I say it's the last waterbed in Nevada, but I could be wrong. Buying accessories is now an online-only thing these days. UGHHH. My husband is so attached to it. I've started warning him it's in it's last year of use, and then: A REAL BED!
Yes, gotten addicted to making popcorn -every- night these past few months. Got a nifty new microwave popper thingy that lets you get great corn, no oil (unless you want it) I've been meaning to make a post on this great find, thanks for reminding me!
Do you like eating in bed? [moved from General Chowhounding board]
I am the last person in the state of Nevada with........A WATERBED! So eating a meal is pretty much an act worthy of Circ De Solei in it.
Popcorn tho? Yes, thank you very much!
Bachi Burger
If you're driving on the I-15, soing south, exit Blue Diamond Rd, and make a left. At LVB, it then becomes Windmill. It's about 2 miles down the road, on the left-hand side, I believe the cross-street is Bermuda.
Totally worth the trip!
Rocco, He's Baaaaaaack...
The pic of him made me laugh waaaaayy too much! A perfect example of a sh*t-eating grin if there ever was.
Thanks for posting! :)
The Perfect Baked Potato
Ohhhhhh..*drools* THAT sounds like a great idea! (your secret's safe with me!)
The Perfect Baked Potato
Yes, I use a toaster oven to finish off my baked potatoes as well. Makes the skin perfect.
One thing no ones mentioned yet (perhaps it's too gauche nowadays?!) is to rub the skin liberally before cooking with...CRISCO. My Grandmother did this, and they were always good, nice crisp skin as well.
Do people even use Cristco anymore!? *ponders*
Bachi Burger
Took my hubby to Bachi Burger on Sunday. He ordered the standard burger, with bacon and cheese, and I got the pork belly bao sandwiches.
Wow, I loved the almost creamy pork belly,in a tasty hoisin .sauce But the portion was -very- small, almost snack-sized to me. I was still hungry after finishing them, so I ordered their Portugese donuts (aka malasadas) which were hot, and with a cinnamon-sugar coating. Delicious!
The #1 issue is I think on the chef-side of things. They take too long IMHO to get food out. I hope this changes as they get more efficient and familiar with their menu.
The staff is still friendly and attentive, no issues with them at all.
We went for lunch on Monday, and they were -PACKED-. This is a good sign!
Look at these Le Creuset colors!
Ohhh, very pretty! As silly as something like the color, i'd buy it for that alone! (yesyes, I've heard how arewome they are) I'm a sucker for a great blue color.
Know Your Enemy: Snappy Snacks Villainy Exposed by Local Media
+1 for oldschool pro wrestling refrence! More of a Blackjack Mulligan fan myself. Both dudes were/are bad to the bone!
Bachi Burger
So I hit up Bachi Burger on the way home from work tonite. They are open till 2am every night (yes!) and it's great to have another good dining choice in the neighborhood that's open quite late. (If any of you have been over to Sushi-Mon after midnight, that place is -packed- every night!)
My server was Lance, and he was quite memorable. He was efficient and very friendly, but seemed a bit overwhelmed/nervous. Perhaps because I was a lone woman diner, he felt bad for me all by myself, and was chatty in a good way. Lance, take a deep breath hon..You've been open for all of 24 days, and once you get a bit more relaxed and confident, you will be a great server!
The food was -wonderful-! I got the Kiki's burger, and it was really really tasty. I'm a onion and mushroom addict, and it was right up my alley. The meat was juicy and had good flavor. After eating it halfway gone, it dawned on me I should have asked if they can/would cook the meat medium, instead of well done. But, even with that, it was still delicious.
I got the standard french fries with the pinapple-tomato ketchup. Nice and thin, crispy and hot, so I was a happy lady. That ketchup tho!!?? Put it on dirt and i'd eat that happily! SO addictive it was.
They serve many types of boba, but I was thrilled to find they serve mughi-cha iced tea. I think this is the first place in Vegas that actually makes it, and perhaps that alone made me in such a good mood, it made the rest of my meal stellar.
Go, go go if you are in the neighborhood. NOW! Before it's always packed and you can't even get a table.. I'm taking my hubby there this weekend.
