Where to take a 16 year old for dinner in the Mission [SF]?

I'll second little star and beretta. I'll also throw in Rosamunde for sausage and french fries(look into it, might be too casual). For a little more upscale, Luna Park. Not exciting or memorable, but the food is solid, it's popular, and it's close to the 16th and valencia hub . (i speculate on what 16 year olds find cool. )

Edible rice paper for candy making

This post got me curious. I'm a beginning confection maker, so don't have a use now, but might in the future. I found these https://www.confectioneryhouse.com/ed... They do say you can use it for torrone...

Ramen Yamadaya, SF Japantown - It's Yummy! Report w/ PICS

I went here on Monday night and have to say that it is one of the better broths that I have had in a long time. I had the tonkotsu Kotteri broth. Rich fatty (almost chunky texture), nice savoriness without too much salt and without an overbearing "porky" flavor that I sometimes find a little murky. Well balanced with the slightly salty generously sized piece of pork belly. Unfortunately, I really disliked their noodles. No chew, no bounce and, to be frank, about halfway through the bowl, found them to be nauseatingly mushy (i.e. inedible). Maybe it's a different style, but they seemed to lack the alkalinity that would help them hold their shape in hot broth and/or were overcooked to begin with. Egg was pretty average. so many SF ramen joints nail the slow cooked marinated egg, it seems like taking a little extra time to get it right would be worth your while. Did love the broth though. My DC and I decided next time we would get broth and pork belly here and go to waraku for the noodles and egg, then combine and enjoy in the courtyard.

I like Camino a lot, and they are large enough to handle big groups

Dive bar veggie burgers?

It's been a few years since I've eaten at Benders, and the kitchen has been through a couple different permutations. IIRC, the burger was passable - a bit dry, a bit salty from the bacon bits, but if you're looking for a dive bar that makes their own vegan burgers, Benders will surely fit the bill.

Help me! My pizza stone got covered with grease!

this is good to know. I assumed it was ruined. I tossed it out last weekend, which was a huge bummer/loss. I will keep this in mind for my next stone.

Help me! My pizza stone got covered with grease!

does this work? I'm not sure what happened to my pizza stone. I think it might have gotten washed with some dishwashing soap somewhere along the way. It releases a noxious odor when I put it in the oven. It was purchased from Williams Sonoma. Are you saying I can fire it somewhere and the odor will disappear?

Atelier Crenn [San Francisco]

I think the language is confusing. I think they mean that the only thing you can order on saturday is the grand tasting and that the degustation is not available (on saturday). Difference between "only the chef's" and "only on saturdays"

Page navigation buttons

For those of us who log in regularly but with long breaks, it would be nice if the page navigation buttons at the bottom displayed 1, 2, 3, and maybe 4 instead of 1,2, 2034, 2035 I'm pretty sure that If I need to see the post made on page 2034, i'll be using the search function. It's kind of annoying to have to go to the bottom to move backward and i generally read the board from last post to most recent.

Looking for a Few Dinners in/near the Castro [San Francisco]

I'm not sure i agree that it's a problem particular to being a vegan restaurant, but much as I enjoy Gracias Madre, i find it hard to eat there often. The menu is too same same from the appetizers to the entrees. I don't know if it's a lack of creativity from the kitchen or maybe an effort to keep costs down by limiting the ingredients, but it makes it hard to put together a truly satisfying meal. Also, food is heavy. most taquerias put a wee bit of greenery on when you order a platillo

Banh Xeo - SF Dish of the Month May 2013

For some reason i thought it depended on the type of shrimp and how it was cooked. I've traveled where you are expected to eat the shrimp in entirety and watched a few westerners struggle as they peeled what they were served. as drewski said, they were tiny little things, but i think that some of the smaller varieties of shrimp have more flavor in the shell than in the flesh

The very best risotto..

I think beretta does a nice risotto. I've only had the squid ink version, but it was nice and creamy.

ISO cheap, yumminess around Outer Sunset near GG park for lunch [San Francisco]

i guess because it's the only indian buffet i've eaten at that has good food. The rest of them in that neighborhood are pretty lousy.

I should visit the Wooly Pig Cafe more often. I definitely second the suggestion.

If the emphasis is more on cheap than delicious, Howards cafe is kind of a quirky throwback with acceptable food, a U shaped bar for the solo diner in the center/back of the space, and specials that have been taped to the wall for 10 years. My favorite is breakfast (cannot be messed up) but lunch is ok considering it's about $5. It's a diner.

It may be blasphemy, but the $10 Curry Village indian buffet on 9th st is the BEST indian buffet. The food is fresh, spicy, and doesn't look like they got it from Indian Sysco. It's tasty and just a little bit on the north end of cheap.

Ler Ros - for the timid at heart [San Francisco]

If you want zero spice or just to have something on the table not spicy and not sour, I've enjoyed the pork stuffed calamari soup, though as a warning, sometimes this dish is well prepared and sometimes the calamari is a little overbooked and the broth is too salty. I find it balances out the spicy dishes well. Iirc the fried egg with acacia is not too spicy. I was less than wowed, but it is worth trying if you are curious. The duck curry can be delicious and doesn't have too much heat. You might also try the whole fried fish items. I prefer the whole fried tilapia-the chili sauce is a dipping sauce, and I think the other whole fried fish comes bathed in a sweet sauce.

Where to find ya cai (preserved mustard green leaves and stems)?

Not really a direct answer, but Andrea Nguyen recently posted about it on her blog. http://www.vietworldkitchen.com/blog/...

She lives in the bay area. She might be willing to tell you where she bought it if you write her a note.

I know this posting is early as the season generally runs end of may through early june, but I am hoping to get news of early sightings and hoping that I might be able to find other purveyors in addition to Nijiya which is the only place that i have seen them in years past.

Corned Beef - SF Dish of the Month (March 2013)

on st patrick's day at the last minute, I decided to get on the Corned Beef bandwagon. I ended up at Guerra's Fine Meats and purchased 4 lbs of the point cut for $3.99/pound. I bought their pickling spice. I simmered the meat, then finished it in the oven with a mustard glaze. I don't think i've ever had homemade corned beef before. It was really nice. fatty so that it melted in your mouth with some leaner parts that made for a nice contrast. my experiences with corned beef have been that it is boiled meat with red color and a lot of salt, so having this rich texture accompanied by a slightly hot, sweet, salty meat was really amazing. I can't compare it to anything else, but I'll be trying other corned beef in the future to see if i can match it.
