Non-Restaurant Foodie Gems?

Looking for Phoenix area foodie gems that are NOT restaurants?

What are your favorite shops and markets that are your "go to" sources for anything food/chef related when you're hunting down that special, unique ingredient, kitchen tool, cookbook, or even the place that offers great cooking classes as part of their business. Spice/oil shops are of particular interest, as are independent/used book stores that might have a focus on cooking/culinary arts.

I have one week to explore the area later this month; day trips to other destinations are also on the agenda, so don't limit yourself to metro-Phoenix.

Phoenicians and other Arizonians, what your "must-go-to" shops and markets?

Non-Restaurant Foodie Gems?

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas and neighborhoods to check out!

Does anyone have any favorite shops that are food-related but not selling food per se (such as kitchen equipment/utensils, cook books, cooking classes, etc..)?

Thanks again!

p.s. NSXTASY: My wife is completely addicted to Garrett's popcorn; it's like crack to her. :)

Non-Restaurant Foodie Gems?

What are the Chicagoland foodie gems that are NOT restaurants? The shops and markets that are your "go to" sources for anything food/chef related when you're hunting down that special, unique ingredient, kitchen tool, cookbook, or even the place that offers great cooking classes as part of their business.

Mrs. Webhund has a week-long conference in Chicago in mid-April and I'm tagging along. My plan is to spend the days when she's in session visiting food-related shops and markets. What I'm looking for specifically are places like The Spice House, House of Glunz, and the like. I understand there's a cooking oil shop that opened next door to the Spice House in Old Town, so that's a good example of the types of places I'm searching for.

I'll have a car available to me, so don't hesitate to recommend your favorite places regardless of where it's at. FWIW, I grew up in the NW suburbs, so am familiar with the area generally (but it's been many years!). I'll have plenty of time on my hands, so even willing to head north to Milwaukee or over to Madison for a great foodie day-trip.

Help me fill up my lonely days!

"Urban Spice" shop in Vancouver?

Thanks for the location info. I was talking with a supplier of industrial-grade food ingredient milling equipment on the U.S. East Coast and he mentioned the Vancouver place. I'll see if I can get some more details and post back. Appreciate the help!

"Urban Spice" shop in Vancouver?

I'm trying to track down a spice/herb shop called "Urban Spice" (or something like that) on Railway Street, in Vancouver, B.C. Any Vancouverites heard of this? Apparently, the owner is a guy by the name of Grant McClain and he sells fantastic, freshly ground spices and hand-mixed rubs/blends. My googling turns up nothing obvious.

Anyone heard of this place/recommend it?

London: Best NON-Restaurant Places and Shops for a Foodie?

What are great foodie sites, things to do, must-go shops, and other unique culinary-related places for a foodie in London that are NOT restaurants?

Leaving next week for 10 days in London and staying near Marble Arch; will go anywhere my Oyster Card will take me. Tell me what the best foodie-sites are that are not restaurants or pubs. I've searched the heck out of Chow and have my lists of places to eat/snack/drink ready to go. But now I need something to see and do between meals. Last year, we stumbled across the amazing Slow Food market next to the Southbank Centre, but we're missing it by one weekend this year, unfortunately. Will be in London December 11-18. So, what do you recommend?

To give an idea of what I'm looking for, currently on my list are: Portobello Road Spice Shop, Books for Cooks in Notting Hill, and, of course, Borough Market. Have also heard good things about Biggles Sausages and Divertimenti.

Finally, for Londonist foodies, which one of these markets do you recommend as "must-sees":

Substitute for Pimm's No. 3 ("Pimm's Winter")?

On a recent trip to London, Mrs. Webhund became addicted to the wonderful hot punch made with 3 parts apple cider to 1 part "Pimm's Winter" (which is also called "Pimm's No. 3). My googling has discovered that, unlike Pimm's No. 1, which is a gin-based liquor, Pimm's No. 3 is a brandy-based drink with cinnamon, orange, and caramel.

Alas, Pimm's No. 3 is not exported to "the Colonies," so I'm going to have to come up with my own substitute. The orange and cinnamon I can handle, but the caramel has got me stumped.

Any suggestions for a Pimm's No. 3 substitute recipe?

Cheers!
