Clubhouse Sandwich Shop

The smoked chicken sandwich is probably better described as a barbecue chicken sandwich (here's a picture http://instagram.com/p/aZngXZoeK8/). The one i had was pretty good, although the crackling was more chewy than crispy. Fries were excellent.

The food here is surprisingly good. I'm a huge fan of their chicken sandwich.

Westmalle, Orval or other Belgian imports in GTA?

Orval is quite different from gulden draak; it's dry, hoppy, and earthy.

Also, orval fans probably already know this, but beer bistro has 4 vintages of orval on its menu.

I haven't been, but the Round Room at the Carlu looks like a great venue for a cocktail party.

Group of girls in Yorkville - advice please!

Has the Yorkville Chimichanga reopened? It was still closed for repairs as of a week ago, and they're not picking up the phone.

Duggan's Brewery

Agreed. I was a fan of Duggan's when it opened, but the beer's gotten worse and the food's too expensive.

Recommendations of Indian, Mexican, Vegetarian, Chinese in Scarborough?

Anjappar Chettinad is a good south Indian restaurant in Scarborough. I particularly like their Poondu Kozhambu (whole garlic curry).

coffee break caterer?

I'm looking for a caterer for the coffee breaks of a conference w/ 150-200 people. Usually the coffee at these sort of events is terrible, and after a day of drinking it i feel a bit ill. I'm hoping to find someone that serves good quality coffee. Any recommendations? Location is UofT.

Duggan's Brewery

Stopped by tonight w/ a couple of friends for dinner. It's too early for a proper review, but i think they're off to a great start.

The beer: Fantastic. There are 7 on tap -- #9 IPA of course, plus a stout, porter, pils, weissbier, fest, & asian lager. We tried them all, and they're all great. None of them are particularly "showy", but they're well crafted, and, how do i put this... poised? There's a subtlety and finesse that shows that Duggan really knows what he's doing. Our waiter said that there were plans for a belgian golden triple in the future.

Food: Decent pub food. We had the curry poutine, steak pie, pulled pork sandwich, & pork hock. The pork hock was enormous -- too much for one person. So big it reminded me of Au Pied de Cochon. Prices are a little on the high-side, ~$20 for mains, ~$12 for sandwiches. Desserts were fine, although the beignets had been sitting around awhile and weren't fresh.

Ambiance: Fine, nothing special. Careful w/ the tabletops -- they appear to have been stained recently, and the stain comes off if you get them wet.

Service: Friendly. A few glitches, but pretty smooth considering it was opening night.

Where to buy bitters downtown

Unfortunately cocktail bitters are hard to find in Toronto. You might try the SLM; i once found a bottle of Fee mint bitters in a store on the lower level.

Caplanskys on College St - impressions?

No, so i went back tonight. The meat was wildly different, far superior to my first heartrending visit. While still no Schwartz's, this time it was at least within the same ballpark, and quite good.

Caplanskys on College St - impressions?

I love this place and desperately want it to succeed, but in no way is the smoked meat anywhere near as good as Schwartz's. It's too tough and stringy.

Toronto help for family of 6

FYI, Brassaii & Crush are upscale, not cheap & cheerful.

All of aser's suggestions are excellent.

Right next to your hotel is an Indian restaurant called 259 Host, which should be decent (although i haven't been yet).

For beer on a Thu/Fri night downtown w/ 6 people, i suggest C'est What or Bar Volo. Smokeless Joe's is close to your hotel, but it's pretty small.

A couple of other family friendly suggestions:
* Chinese Traditional Buns
* Lahore Tikka House

Back Alley BBQ / Romolo Pizza Napoletana

Agreed, the pizza here is pretty good, though not perfect. Last time i went the crust was slightly underdone, there was a bit too much cheese, and i would have preferred a little more basil. While i think the pizza at Libretto is better, i'm not sure it's worth the extra hassle.

Thanks thirtyeyes! Unfortunately i probably won't make it to Pearl, given the short trip and that Toronto has excellent Chinese food.

I'm thinking about replacing Cafe Chloe w/ The Linkery. Craft beer seems to be one of SD's strong suits.

It's the Japanese version of Sichuan dan dan noodles. Basically a sesame ramen, topped with minced pork, some veggies, and plenty of rayu. Dan dan mien is good too, just different.

Coming down for a weekend to visit family. Currently got my eye on Cafe Chloe, Sushi Kaito, Urban Solace, Aqui es Texcoco, Tacos El Paisa, and Super Cocina. (If it were up to me i'd just eat tacos the whole time; not much Mexican in Toronto.)

A few random questions:

* We'll have a baby with us; will that be a problem at Chloe, Kaito, or Solace?

* Staying in Rancho Bernardo, any decent coffee/croissants/scones nearby?

* Anywhere i can get Japanese tantanmen?

* How's the atmosphere at the Tractor Room on a weekend? Looking for a decent cocktail, but not in a meatmarket.

Thanks for any advice!

Another new izakaya "Koyoi"

Stopped by Koyoi early this evening for a quick bite. I was a little surprised when i arrived, as the interior is nearly all white and there are only 3 seats at the bar. Feels more like a restaurant than a traditional izakaya.

Ordered a sapporo and an okonomiyaki off of the specials menu. This is the first time i've tried okonomiyaki, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but i thought it was pretty good. Two egg & vegetable pancakes, with octopus, pork and vegetables in between, and topped off w/ a sweetish brown sauce and flakes of some sort. (How's that for a detailed description? ;) Service was friendly, although the (non-japanese) waitress wasn't really sure what okonomiyaki was when i asked.

Gets a provisional thumbs-up from me. I'll definitely be going back to try out more of the menu. Curious what the experts think of this place.
