A few days in Minneapolis area - did my CH homework

I went to Jax for the first time in decades. I was very pleased to see they still have a phone booth in the bar.

Buttered Tin cupcake vs. Cupcake vs. ?

I love the white cupcakes at Wuollet on 50th. They keep them in a cooler case and the frosting has the consistency of fudge.

Remember "Nankin" Chicken Chow Mein? Found "Wangs" in "Tonka even better.

Last year I went to Wangs twice. The first time was okay, the second time was terrible. Too bad because I moved to Minnetonka and it would be really convenient.

I'm thinking of trying Wok in the Park.

I was thinking of taking my mom there, but they are closed for renovation.

I work on 50th and France and drive by the Convention Grill quite often. I was going to eat there once but it was too busy. I'm not a burger eater anyway.

I took my mom to the Bloomington Fudds a few weeks ago. I think the burger was $10.

Italian Subs (Do not count Subway!)

I never should have read this. Now I want to go to NJ for a hoagie. There is (was?) a place called Franks. I think it was Asbury Park. Best tuna hoagie I've ever had.

A friend of mine went to prom on a group date, and the girls were told they were going to the Camelot.

They were taken to the camel lot at Brookdale for a picnic dinner, prepared by the guys. Real silverware, plates, linens. They said it was more fun than any fancy place.

What is open on Thanksgiving for lunch/dinner

My mom and I were just taking about this today. Last year she went to Jax Cafe with my sister and brother. My brother loved the turkey dinner, my mother hated it and my sister had special food made (vegan) and thought it was okay. I looked at the menu and, frankly, I have better things to spend that kind of money on. Like rent.

We are going to the Monte Carlo for chicken wings.

Nicollet Island Inn has always been lovely when I used to go on Christmas.

Rusty Taco - Awful!

I liked the fried chicken taco with jalapeno cole slaw, and flour tortilla, but the last two times I had it the slaw wasn't as good. I don't go out of my way to stop there, but if I am in the area it is a good fast food option.

A week in downtown Minneapolis--where do I eat?

I'm a fan of the Monte Carlo for the chicken wings. Everything else there is ordinary.

Speaking of pizza, did anyone ever eat at Perry's near Dinkytown? I think there is a Perry's on campus now, but it isn't the same stuff. This was deep dish only, and the wait time was always at least an hour. Had to be around 1975 when a friend introduced me. I've never had anything like it.

Breakfast in Southern Burbs?

I live next to Jensen's in Burnsville. They are just okay, nothing great, unfortunately. But slightly grey recommending the Windmill is surprising because I've never been inside. I've been afraid, actually. It looks like the old shed at my grandma's where they would clean the fish. Not kidding.

St. Paul Whole Foods is moving to the corner of Snelling and Selby.

Overall I think it is one of the dirtiest stores I've ever been in. Not as bad as Cooper's on W7th, but nearly that bad.

And I'd pay extra if the employees would wash their hands.

I do! I know I went there a few times as a child. I don't recall any of the food, but I loved the interior of the restaurant. When it reopened I had wanted to take my mother there, figuring even if the food wasn't that good, we could have tea and look around, but they closed before we got there.

Vegan recommendations?

I'm sure there are multiple threads on this topic, but I can't find any by searching.

My very strict vegan sibling is coming to town. Her favorite place to eat was French Meadow, but last year she was disappointed in the taste of her favorite dish there.

I'd like to take her somewhere else this year. It is okay if the place serves meat as long as they don't bring her a place of veggies with sliced steak on it (yes, that has happened).

Any Aldi shoppers here?

It isn't? I know almost every time I read an article in any of those "how to save money on groceries" sites, they are always quick to add that Aldi's and Trader Joe's are the same company with different labels.

Best Pie

I do not recommend Medoberri for a pie. I've tried a few times to get a piece of FRESH pie there, and they never have it. I call ahead and they assure me the delivery was going to happen at a specific day and time, and it is never there. Once I did get a piece of the double lemon, which is my favorite, and it was gummy as if it had been in the cooler for weeks.

Also, I am not crazy about the employees with runny noses during flu season who don't know about kleenex. Your fingers are not the same as a tissue.

The drive to Stockholm isn't a bad drive.

Kosher for Passover desserts from a bakery/restaurant?

Half my family will be in town the end of March. We want to have an afternoon dessert thing set up at my Mother's nursing home, both because of her condition and the cost involved in going out.

It is during Passover. Part of the family here is strictly Kosher, so they won't eat anything that I make in my kitchen since I don't keep kosher and all my baking stuff has had flour and milk products in it.

Anyone know of a place to buy anything pre-made? I know Byerly's has popovers, but I called there today and they didn't think they would have brownies, cookies or cake.

Before snowstorm, I must have ________

No wind? I don't know where you were, but I can tell you that on November 1 when I was driving to work and then trying to dig my car out after working for 16 hours, there was plenty of wind. The roads not only weren't opened up by November 1, for almost a week afterwards there were huge ice ruts in the streets, even the major ones.

It was a blizzard.

Before snowstorm, I must have ________

I used to work in a 24-hour grocery store on the night shift. Our joke was that whenever there was bad weather on the way and a travellers advisory was ordered, people misunderstood and thought they were being advised to travel.

What people bought always amazed me. There were the usual things, milk, eggs, bread, juice. Frozen pizza, M&Ms and potato chips were popular, but then they were always big after bar rush as well. Cookie dough or the stuff to bake cookies was another.

Personally, I always wanted hot chocolate more than anything.

Keurig Question

I just read on Pocket Your Dollars that you can take the used cup, cover the whole in it very carefully with a finger, shake it and use it one more time, getting two cups out of one K-Cup.

Personally, I get the whole love of K-Cups, but there is no way I'd actually get one of those things. I just like to use them at the doctors office and the hair salon.

Chicago style pizza in MSP?

In the 80's there was a place in Minneapolis called Mario's. I loved their deep dish. They opened a place in St Paul, which was Gannon's and is now a Buca. LOVED it. Not sure what happened, one day we called for take out and they were both closed. That is the only deep dish I've had around here that was near Chicago deep dish.

I recall My Pi only as a location. I know I ate there but no recollection of anything about it.

There was also a place on campus called Perry's (NOT the current Perry's) that was the best pizza of any kind. Although it was discovered the same summer my friends and I discovered drugs so my memory of the place is slightly tainted.

Rusty Taco in Minneapolis

I went yesterday for the first time, to the St Paul RT. I had the fried chicken taco, which I ordered mostly because of the slaw and jalapeno ranch dressing. I loved it. The chicken was moist and the slaw/dressing was a great combo.

I had been at Trader Joe's and needed something to hold me over until I got home, so I admit my requirements weren't very high, but I'll stop again and try a few other things.

And the staff was very friendly.
