Milk in bags ... Are Canadians weird, or are Americans the weirdos?

Bahahaha! That one took me a minute. Here and I was feeling a bit insulted, being middle-aged and all~

Trader Joe's Yay/Nay Thread - January 2014!! [OLD]

I tried them once and a good number of them were broken from the get-go. Those that were left were tough.

They're pretty reasonable fresh at my local fishmonger, so I now stick to those.

No Sriracha?!

Yep, jpc, Safeway on S. Commercial has bunches on both sides of the "ethnic" aisle! The 4 bottles I bought were sent south and I need to get a couple for myself as backup now.

Food Charities volunteer opportunites?

Another thought is to contact your local Rotary or Soroptimist clubs to see if they know of any ongoing projects. They are both international organizations with contacts all over the world. They should be willing to put out feelers for you if they don't know of something right off the top of their heads.

Simplecups disposable filters: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B...

I'd purchased some locally for use in some other cup, but they had a little paper lid attached that I had to remove each time. The Simplecups don't have that, so one less step.

The little paper filters make it much easier to clean up the Ekobrew cups. I just tap them over the garbage can and then rinse any grinds off the lid. Voila!

No Sriracha?!

nj, I was in California over the holidays and took my first trip to 99 Ranch. One of my hosts asked me to pick up some Rooster sauce while I was there. The shelf was empty of Huy Fong rooster sauce, however there were other Huy Fong products and other srirachas, so it appears to be just the specific sauce at this point.

We got back to Oregon yesterday and I had to pick up groceries. Any shortage doesn't seem to have hit here yet, so I picked up quite a bit, both for myself and to send back down there to our friends.

99 Ranch may have been out temporarily, so take my observations with a grain of salt - or a dash of hot sauce!

I've been using the Ekobrew cups since I bought my Kuerig in May and with mini-filters from Amazon, really enjoy the coffee. The filters really cut down on the sludge factor.

I like canned cranberry sauce! What holiday treates do you like that foodies would shudder at?

I'm in the same camp there. I specifically ask for it when Mom cooks a holiday dinner, and am really disappointed if someone does homemade or some other brand. Yep, weird here too!

The bark did that to me too! And I ran into a friend that checked out the contents of my cart on the way to the cashier. He was impressed by the bark anyway. I also have yet to try it, since I opened the Dark Chocolate Cashew Brittle first. I have to say that it's pretty darn good!

I bought that on a Woot deal a couple of years ago, and I always say it's the only cheese I've ever eaten that bites back! It's pretty different.

The Great Pumpkin has descended on TJs!!!!

Yay so far: Pumpkin biscotti, pumpkin croissants, and pumpkin bars.

Bought but haven't yet tried: Pumpkin bread pudding, pumpkin granola and pumpkin toaster pastries.

I love the flavor of pumpkin, and so far, these are all hits!

Agree on the biscotti. I do like pumpkin, and love the texture of biscotti. I think they're great.

Strategies at Grocery Outlet?

Here in Salem we refer to it as the "Bent Can Store". I've heard of people in the past who would try out the wine in the parking lot and if it was good, they'd go in an buy them out because it'd be gone the next time.

I've gotten great deals on odd things like makeup. It's also the only place I was able to find very low-sugar soy yogurt, at 3g/serving - and $.99 for a large, 4-serving or so tub. I stocked up at the time, then lost my taste for yogurt and haven't looked for it since.

I saw that, so I didn't buy it because of the wine. I'm sure with all of the garlic flavor that you can't taste it, but I don't want to stress my liver for it.

Ickky Party Dishes

I'm not familiar with that area of the country, but when I've heard about "banana belts" it's usually a warmer than usual strip. Here in Oregon, part of the southern coast is referred to as a banana belt due to the warmth generated by ocean currents.

Rude guest?

I don't like cooked fish in general (love most shellfish), and particularly dislike salmon. And I live in the PNW. But then again, I admit to being extremely picky. When salmon is the main dish, I'll nibble at a small portion, making sure I don't eat much of anything else either. Anyone I'd dine with knows my medical issues prevent me from eating alot.

A couple of weeks ago, I went down to my folks house for dinner, and knowing that I don't like cooked fish, they asked whether I wanted the salmon raw or cooked. I guess they'd forgotten that I don't like salmon either way. So as not to have them prepare something special for me, I ate a small portion of the salmon - and an extra roll.

When do you correct incorrect pronunciation?

I thought of this thread a couple of weeks ago when I met up with some former co-workers for lunch. As usual, a few of us were discussing cooking. One guy was explaining how he had cooked a large cut of meat (I don't remember what) and I finally said: "Oh, sous vide?". "Yeah!". I'm thinking that he may have thought others in the conversation might not know what it was. And I pronounced it correctly, LOL

Ickky Party Dishes

I've heard of the grape jelly with barbecue sauce in crockpot meatballs exactly once. I was setting helping set up a dinner for volunteers for an event and a friend was making them. I was afraid to try them.
OK, so usually I don't know the recipes and almost never eat meatballs in glop.

Post-Bariatric Surgery restaurant dining

Oh, I haven't had any issues myself. Restaurants have always accommodated me, including letting me order from the "senior" menu, especially if I'm dining with a group of seniors.

It's been 4 years for me, and it wasn't elective or for weight loss.

I was just stating why splitting plates isn't an option for some diners.

Natural Grocers opening here Wednesday

So far I haven't seen any of their commercials, but I'll keep that in mind! The other natural foods store close by is a single, locally owned store and they're stepping up their print advertising including the word local in everything.

Post-Bariatric Surgery restaurant dining

Not everyone wants to eat the same thing as their dining partner. And especially in the case of post-gastric surgery, many of us can't eat what others are eating.

Portion sizes at restaurants have been discussed many times before.

Natural Grocers opening here Wednesday

I did stop by just before their stated 8:04 closing time. I was told that they do that so that people aren't rushed out, but as I left, they weren't letting people in after that time.

There is quite a bit of produce, and a good variety of meats. Lot's of GF items and ingredients. Tons of Amy's frozen items.

I do like the packaged herbs, spices, etc. I bought a couple of bags of dehydrated soup vegetables, since I never use enough to keep most veggies from going bad.

They do have a large selection of brands and quantities of vitamins and supplements.

Since it was opening day, the staff were pretty much worn out by then, but still very friendly. I don't know about knowledge, since I didn't ask any questions this time around.

Your Top 5 Trader Joe's Products? [OLD]

I buy a couple of packages of the fresh garlic naan at a time and keep them in the bottom bin of the fridge. I throw them in the toaster oven while dinner's cooking, and they work out perfectly! I had some last night to sop up garlic butter from steamed manila clams.

Natural Grocers opening here Wednesday

Hi all. We have a Natural Grocers opening here on Wednesday, located between a long-standing local natural grocery store and Trader Joe's - all within about 3 miles of each other on the same road.

Since Natural Grocers is a chain, I was wondering what other hounds' experience with it was, what's good, what isn't, and how it compares to other specialty stores? I understand that it's not a full-service grocery, so I know that one can't shop there for everything.

Thanks in advance!

Pesto at Restaurants-- Just about all add Cream!!!

Ummm, out here on the West Coast - at least where I've eaten, a pesto sauce does not come with cream. Believe me, most of us would know if it was there, even if we've never been to Italy. I love pesto, so depending on what else is in the dish, I like to order it. The menu says pesto - and that's what comes - no cream.
