Things you want to try making
Was it a skinless salmon fillet? Without skin it cures too fast. With skin, 3 days is the norm.
Top Chef Texas - Ep. #15 - 02/15/12 (Spoilers)
Thank you, huiray! You took the words right out of my mouth. I was fuming the whole time I was watching last night. If they keep doing this in the next season, I'm done with Top Chef. It's humiliating to the contestants and also to us, the viewers.
What Fairway items do you recommend?
Their own smoked salmon. Much tastier than Zabar's and cheaper.
Is there a one-dish meal that you can't live without?
Wow, thanks so much! Can't wait to try it!
Anyone Else Planning for Thanksgiving Already?
OMG, I, too always make a two potato gratin for TG! You gave me some other great ideas, though. Thanks!
Ideas for fruit dessert for Thanksgiving (not pie)
I make this one by Ina Garten and people just go nuts for it (use any apples, omit the pears if you like, but keep the cranberries - they make the sauce a gorgeous pink!):

biondanonima,
Would you share the recipe, please?
what are you making today?
Great thread! I roasted some eggplant today and will make pasta with eggplant, tomato sauce and mozzarella tomorrow. It's a favorite at our house. Today had leftover brocolli with chickpeas and cherry tomatoes and chicken scallopine. There is a roasted chicken and potato dinner planned for a rainy (according to all channels) Friday night :-)
Tarry Lodge - any recent experiences?
Yep, were there for mom's 60th birthday. When reserving, asked for a table upstairs (not on the second floor between kitchen and register) It was a Monday and the (older) guy at the door (who was he and where was the nice hostess?) wanted to seat us downstairs so I reminded him we'd asked for upstairs. He sent a girl to check and she then took us to a table between the kitchen and register, the busy waiter/busboy route. Since it was a special occasion, I wanted to sit in a quieter area and asked her. The old guy came rushing upstairs, gave us a dirty look (meanwhile we're milling about the staircase being in everyone's way) and finally *lets* us have a table where we had originally requested to be seated. This was on a Monday night, mind you and the restaurant was only half full! I don't know who that guy is, but he acted like a major a**hole to us. Service was OK, it was hard to get a hold of the waitress who seemed overwhelmed.
This is the second time we've been to Tarry Lodge and we won't be coming back. I don't appreciate getting "attitude" when I go out to eat - they're in business of providing a service to me, not the other way around.

Casa Mono - time restraints on dinner
That's the impression we got, too. When we first walked it, it was pouring outside and even though our table was ready he made us stand by the door (being in everyone's way, from the waiters to the customers) until the other two people in our party came in from Bar Jamon (where they were waiting for us). It was so rude and unnecessary.

Casa Mono - time restraints on dinner
We were at Casa Mono this weekend. Ordered a lot of food and wine, yet as we had paid our bill and one of us was still sipping their wine, the manager came over and asked us would we move to Bar Jamon since there were people outside waiting for our table. That request did not sit well with us after what had been a truly memorable meal. What say you: do you think what the manager did was appropriate? Are people only allowed 2 hours to finish their dinner? We certainly were ticked off by it and are not in a rush to return.

What is needed to have a well stocked freezer?
I *always* have bread, bagels, croissants, blueberry whole wheat waffles, chicken stock, bacon, chopped herbs, broccoli, Alexia fries, ice cream.
something like Babbo
FYI, all I meant by "foodie" was that the menu has many unusual items that you would not find in a typical Italian-American restaurant. I didn't mean to suggest that Babbo is the best NY has to offer. In fact, I am yet to have a stellar meal at any of his restaurants.
P.S. I've been to Babbo and never wanted to go back: it didn't "blow my mind" in any way, it was too loud and service was plain obnoxious (A waiter expalined to someone in our party that "a branzino - is a flaky, mediterranean fish." It's become a standing joke for us to this day ;-)

I've been to both Veritas and Scarpetta and both were lovely. Veritas has an older, sophisticated, quiet vibe. Scarpetta very happening, loud, great food, not pretentious. Have a great birthday!

I'd go with Maialino, although you said your dad wanted "to take you out to Babbo for your birthday". Babbo is as "foodie" as it gets...

Russian restaurant recs?
Mari Vanna is a decent and authentic Russian restaurant in Manhattan. The atmosphere can be annoying as they blast loud disco-ish music as though you were in a club. Service is very good. Food is just good, not great. It will do in a pinch.
Disclaimer: I'm Russian.

Mari Vanna- Anyone been
Went in October. It was good. Service was impeccable. Very loud.
The salo late was out of this world. Blimi with red caviar were delicious. Don't get the pickles. I had the "sosiski" (hot dogs w/ mash and peas). My husband enjoyed his pelmeni. I'd go again.
Desperately Seeking Winter Salad Ideas
My hubby and I just had a lovely fall greens salad at Lupa with a warm guanciale dressing. It was simply greens (chinese kale, dandelion, chard) which the waiter gave a squeeze of lemon and drizzled with hot oil with bits of crispy guanciale. Mmmm, it was heaven on a plate!
Where can I buy authentic german sausages (bratwurst, bockwurst, weisswurst)?
I love, love, love liverwurst. Need to get some asap!

Ahh, Heidelberg! Had many good dinners there back in the 90's. Happy memories.
Hubby and I now prefer Zum Schneider for the outdoor seating and the relaxed ambiance.

I really, really dislike oaked Chardonnay. Maybe a white bordeaux instead?...
A Shiraz sounds great as does a Sauvignon Blanc (easily one of my favorite thinks to drink). Can you recommend any particular bottles you enjoy?

A dry rosé to go with pasta carbonara
Can anyone recommend a good, dry rosé to pair with a classic carbonara (eggs/pancetta/pecorino)? Would be good if it was under $25. Thanks.
