San Diego New Places Opening Thread Numero Tres.
I heard today that it will be a market/restaurant with the same owner as the Fish Bucket in Tierrasanta.
Where to find gluten, soy, canola oil, peanut, egg, cow dairy, corn free breakfast in San Diego?
Also, she does not say that she is allergic to everything on the list and perhaps just didn't segregate which are allergies and which are intolerances.
Best San Diego Mexican Food?
The Carnitas Uruapan in Lemon Grove was closed on a Friday night recently and Yelp has it listed as closed permanently.

I saw a truck outside yesterday and it looked like people were inside doing work. It would be nice to have a good fish market in the area.
Gaslamp bound
Neighborhood, Monkey Paw and Downtown Johnny Browns for beer. None are in the gaslamp proper but all are downtown and walkable.
Gluten-free vegan dining
My wife has cut out gluten as well and said the GF pancakes at the Trails were better than the ones at Snooze.
I read recently that the GF beers that were tested almost all had Gluten in them. Apparently cross-contamination is very prevalent.
San Diego - Great weather, but where is the outside dining?
Gingham in La Mesa has a very nice outdoor patio.

Thanks for the detailed response. Unfortunately, it jibes with the sentiment that SD is not willing as a whole to pay the price to fund the kind of restaurants that would radically change the dining scene.

I am curious as to where Catalina Offshore and/or Point Loma Seafoods fit into this discussion. It appears from both places' websites that at least some portion of their products are from local fisherman. Would that be because every place gets some fish from everywhere (as I read your posts to say)?
I had been making the assumption that a restaurant could obtain local, fresh seafood from Catalina if they chose to and if it were profitable but that the demand for a restaurant that made such choices was limited. It seems from your posts that the system is much more restrictive than I had considered.
Any good deli in San Diego?
They told me that they have a someone who is making the food to their recipe and that it is coming out exactly how they want it. Judging from the knishes, I would say that they definitely have skill.
Any good deli in San Diego?
The knishes there were awesome. I need to try the meats again since having it thin-sliced throws me off. Super nice folks as well.
Any good deli in San Diego?
I wouldn't have recommended cheers for anything. I found it to be unexceptional cold cut sandwiches on mediocre bread. It is a liquor store and deli with no waiters or ambiance. I haven't tried any of the hot food or any corned beef or pastrami and it would not have occurred to me to do so.
Any good deli in San Diego?
I don't recall seeing anything but pre-packed cold cuts at Cheers. Do you know what brand they carry or whether they make their CB/Pastrami in house?
West Coast BBQ and Brew
Totally agree about the sides. The chili has been my favorite but that is really only in comparison to the rest of the sides. The jalapeno brisket sandwich was a decent meal and in general I like their beef vs. pork or chicken.
West Coast BBQ and Brew
Just saw in SD Magazine that it will be in conjunction w/ West Coast BBQ on Lake Murray Blvd. Decent but not great BBQ that has been discussed on the board before.
It was heretofore impossible for me to get good beer without driving so to potentially have a place with an O'Brien's-level selection in my neighborhood is fantastic. Hope there was no extra charge for the use of your wet blanket (ha ha)
West Coast BBQ and Brew
From the O'Brien's newsletter:
"We are getting close to opening West Coast Barbecue and Brew in La Mesa. We are partnering up with our friend Larry who will be running the place. Larry plans on having 28 draft beers and a nice bottle list along with great barbecue food. Look for more details next month, but hopefully the draft beer will flowing by May 1st with a grand opening towards the middle of May featuring some great beers. Expect the line up to be very O'Brien's-centric."
Eat at West Coast BBQ recently and there was no sign of changes although the storefronts next door appear vacant - perhaps they are expanding into there and will just close the main part once the new part is ready? No word on location but I am very excited!
Kearny Mesa area dining
If kids are tired/cranky and you want to stay in, go to Nijya Market and pick up the premade sushi and prepared food. Makes a nice, easy meal.
Flying solo in San Diego for 2 days
While it is not the most convenient, using the trolley or bus will greatly expand the area you can consider. The Number 2 bus runs up broadway/30th street to get to North Park and there are tons of recommendations for places in North Park/South Park - The Linkery, Urban Solace, Mariscos German truck (parking lot of IGA). I have enjoyed El Take it Easy recently as well.
You can take the Trolley to Chula Vista where there are many Mexican Mariscos restaurants but I am not familiar enough with that area to tell you which are accessible from the Trolley.
Please comment on my dining list for my 5-day trip to SD
I would also recommend El Take it Easy - same owner as Linkery and same focus on locally sourced ingredients but with a more Mexican take on them.
Need Takeout Recommendations
I would go to Northgate Gonzalez market and pick up food there. In addition to the hot food - Carnitas, Machaca, rice and beans, etc., they have numerous salsas, ceviches and aguachiles to pick up. They will have guacamole, different kinds of crema and different cheeses - cotija, quesadilla and others.
They make their own tortillas and chips there and have a bakery with desserts and fresh rolls. You can get a great meal to go there. Super unhealthy, but I love getting their huge tortillas, carnitas and the quesadilla cheese and making carnitas quesadillas.
Family Dining Suggestions
Near the Zoo - (North Park area)
Blind Lady Ale House has excellent beers and pizza and is very family friendly during the day. I understand that it gets pretty crowded at night and with self-serve seating may not be conducive to eating with the kids.
El Take it Easy is a gastro-cantina in North Park with the same owner as the Linkery. I enjoy the food at both places and have found the Linkery to have better beer and be more kid-friendly but I have enjoyed the food at El Take it Easy better.
URBN Pizza on University and 31st. New Haven style pizza and good beer. Seems like it would become more of a bar than restaurant on weekend nights so couldn't say for sure whether it would be kid-friendly then.
Station Tavern in South Park is also very family friendly - mostly outdoor seating with a small gravel play area. I enjoyed the chickpea patty burger better than the beef ones and they definitely have some good beer on tap. Also nearby to that is a storefront where you can buy growlers of Stone beer to go.
In other areas:
Pizza Port has great beer and is very kid friendly at all their locations. The Carlsbad location is an exit or two north of Legoland.
Coronado Brewing Company has a kids night - Tuesday, I think. I haven't eaten there but they have some very good brews.
Second the recommendation for Stone World Bistro. Not sure when your trip is but check to see if there is an event there and make a reservation for a table.
Not sure of the number and ages of your kids but this is from the point of view of having a kid that uses a high chair or booster.
Dim Sum - Emerald, Jasmine, China (something) Or...
We haven't been for Dim Sum in a while but we found Pearl in Rancho Bernardo to be the best of the lot. Added advantage of being a nice restaurant adjacent to a park where you can see a small lake. Same owners as Jasmine I believe. Cart service.
Need Point Loma recommendations
Quality Social does not get any mentions here but I enjoyed the charcuterie plate I had there. It definitely gets pretty noisy in there. If you can stray a little bit outside the gaslamp proper, consider Cafe Chloe, Cowboy Star and Neighborhood.
The Super Diners do East County
About West Coast, I wonder if he means that Tom Nickel is going to take over the current West Coast BBQ spot or is going to open a competitor with a startlingly similar name. Either way, that is the best news I have heard in a long time!
First time in San Diego end of March for wife's bday
Does the Tap Room allow people under 21?
First time in San Diego end of March for wife's bday
Bay Park Seafood is close to the hotel and is a good, casual seafood restaurant/market. The Fishery in PB is a more upscale seafood restaurant/market but still casual enough to take your 8 month old.
I have only had breakfast/brunch at JRDN in your hotel and thought the food was very good. Considering they have a lot of outdoor seating and it is in your hotel, I would definitely recommend it. Not sure that it would be OK to bring the baby there for dinner, though.
Gonna be there in March for 6 days...
At the 2 San Diego locations I have been to at least one of the workers spoke some English. The Lengua tacos were delicious.
1st time to Vegas
If it helps, I eat at a branch of Tacos El Gordo in San Diego last week and the adobada is fantastic. Asked the guy about the LV locations and he said that everything was the same as it was throughout all the locations.
Best Mexican in Hillcrest or Anywhere
Went to the one on Palm Ave yesterday and agree that the Adobada was much better than the Carne, which I found a little too salty. The Lengua was very good, too.
