Alphonso mangoes
I've tried them once at Marché Jean-Talon and they were great, plus they were larger. Were do you usually get them?
Alphonso mangoes
I read that the price is going down ;-)

It's my first them trying them so it's tough for me to say... For me the difference with a "normal" mango is like the difference between a local strawberry and one from California in the middle of winter. It's true that they have a somewhat soapy aroma though. How do the Kesar usually compare?
Alphonso mangoes
Thanks I got my mangoes this morning. I got the alphonsos for 18$ a case. They had Kesar too.
Cooking Fries in Tallow [split from Quebec]
I tried to buy some for a long time but it was only available at wholesalers. I now make my own:
Get some beef fat (suet) from a butcher, chop it and put it in the food processor while it's still semi-frozen. Put that "ground fat" in a dutch oven and melt it (stir the "slush" once in a while) until all is left is small brown bits. Filter with a cheesecloth and voilà!
(I do this outside because of the smell)
The whole process is quite disgusting but it's cheap, since most butchers will just give you the suet!
I use a mix of 50/50 tallow and peanut oil to make my fries.
Les Moulins de Soulanges Flour
Do you make bread with the flour?
Is the difference worth the price?
I pay 18$ for my "Oak" flour from P&H Milling.
Passion Fruit Puree
You can also get it at the latino butcher, westside of Marché Jean-Talon.

Any updates on that front? Does somebody know when is the best time to go? Thanks.
WTB maple syrup in (relatively) large quantities
So I bought it at IGA for 5,99$. Special ends today.
WTB maple syrup in (relatively) large quantities
I could go for 16 if the price is good :-P
I was hoping to pay less than 6$ a can...
WTB maple syrup in (relatively) large quantities
I might be a bit late but I want to stock up on maple syrup for the year. I want to buy 8 cans (a gallon) and I was wondering what would be the best place in Montreal. Does anybody know what is the price around Marché Jean-Talon for maple syrup this year?
Where can I buy reasonably priced, delicious Portugese custard tarts
My Portuguese friend recommends Anges gourmets on Saint-Laurent. They are great but I don't know the price.
grass fed beef
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had updates on that subject. I'm still trying to find a butcher in Montreal who sells pastured beef. I tried La Maison du Roti but they didn't have it. Maybe one of the butcher at Atwater market?
How's the food at Saint Bock?
I also remember is as pretty standard bar food. The fries were good though.
APDC or Joe Beef or Les Deux Singes
I've never been there but I think that Deux singes is definitely not in the same league as the other two.
Joe Beef is the kind of place where I would be happy to eat every week for the rest of my life.
APDC is the place where I had some of the most memorable meals in my life. Either way, you can't go wrong. However, Joe Beef is the most expensive of the bunch.

Favorite meals to eat at the jean talon and atwater markets?
I like the vegetable pakoras at La Dépense. From Jean-Talon Market, you could also walk to Dépanneur le Pick up.

Laurier Gordon Ramsay
Oh thanks for the precision, we didn't see the beer menu and this is what I deducted from the beer taps and what was being poured at the bar. Great to see that they serve Dieu du ciel.
Laurier Gordon Ramsay
Here's a quick review:
- I ordered the poutine and it looked appealing with a lot of fresh cheese. However the sauce was not appropriate and the combination tasted weird. I think they made a good effort to bring a sauce that taste more like real chicken, but for poutine, you definitely need "brown" gravy.
- According to my date, the chicken and the bread were excellent. I also liked the slaw.
- The fries were pleasant at first but I wish they would offer the option to get them without the spices
- The service was good at first (we didn't wait long for our food) but everything broke down afterward (mostly because they were understaffed) and we had to wait a long time to get our bill.
Overall, I'm still on the fence and I haven't decided yet if I'm going back. I wanted to like it since it's a nice addition to the neighbourghood, the place is looking good and the prices are not outrageous. However I feel like they still need to tweak their menu and manage their service better.
Jarred pasta sauces?
Have you tried the "drogheria" next to Fairmount Bagel? This place is quite intriguing.
Where to stock my post-modern pantry?
I don't think there was additional duties at the post office, but the shipping was steep.

looing for good quality baking stone or unglazed quarry tiles in Montreal
I've heard that you can get good results with a "kiln" stone" (used to bake pottery). Unfortunately, the only place I know that sells them is SIAL in Laval.
However, I've havent tried it yet. For the bread, the dutch oven method will yield the best results.
ISO: Opah (fish)
Have you ever seen this fish in Montreal?
According to Wikipedia, it's "delicious" ;-)

ISO: Potato rolls for hamburgers
Thanks for the info. This is what I was talking about:

They usually look like "regular" hamburger buns.
ISO: Potato rolls for hamburgers
Hi,
I was wondering if somebody know where I can find potato rolls for hamburgers. I'm looking for something similar to Martin's Famous Potato Rolls in the US (that's what they use at the Shake Shack in NYC).
I've tried baking my own, but it seems that is the rare kind of case where industrial is better!
Au Cinquieme Peche will relocate
I saw the restaurant for sale on a realtor's website.
