Capo Calgary Closed
In talking with the owner a few weeks back at Borgo I got the impression he was tired of doing the fine dining thing. And seeing him front-of-house at Borgo, smiling and happy which he never was in the kitchen at Capo, kind of confirms it for me.
Not really 100% sure what did in Nectar but I’d bet it had nothing to do with the lease. If you watched Top Chef Canada you can draw your own conclusions.
Sexiest restaurant YYC?
KI Sushi hands down! It’s next to the Westin Hotel downtown. One of the nicest sushi restaurants I’ve been to if not the nicest decor in Calgary. Tres sexy!

Tough call. My home town ain’t about much these days other than Boston Pizza. Some tips: try Bobby’s Place-a little pub on High Street. While there, buy some donuts at the Dutch Bakery. Lastly, if you wanna seek it out, grab a pepperoni pizza from Rodo’s (if they’re still around)

The manager, Mike Mendelman, is the son-in-law of the owner of Mercato. He’s been up in Banff tearing it up at the Maple Leaf for years. A former member of the Calgary Irish Rugby club, he’s a speedster on the wing, but, sadly, has hands of stone.

And you think the Banke is bad? Try Sociale! What I thought was going to be a restaurant is full-on nightclub at the night. Line-ups, juiced up doormen, ridiculous prices and enough AXE bodyspray to choke a skunk. Plus, the place isn’t even finished. It looks crappy and is getting worse by the night. Here’s my favorite part though: there are shelves in the toilet stalls four feet off the ground. What could that be for I wonder? Putting your drink on? Maybe. But more likely doing huge rails of blow. Count this guy out.

Well...it’s a going to be a bar not a restaurant from what I can see. Or maybe closer to a supper club? They’re doing bottle service which always befuddles me ya know? We’re in Calgary not South Beach. Like I’m going to pay $300 for a bottle of Grey Goose! It will only attract the wrong cr....hold on....damn! The alarm in my Bentley is going off. BRB.

Calgary: Restaurant or Venue that can seat and feed 140 people?
Try the Calgary Chamber of Commerce. It’s across the street from the Bow. On the 4th floor they have a full banquet facility with a bar. It looks like any room from the Palliser Hotel. That is to say Beautiful! I got married there and we had our reception there as well. They offer a full choice of menu items and appies, all at a reasonable price. About the only thing they don’t do well is market their facility. It’s open to everyone and is truly a hidden gem. Cheers!

Johnny! In the case of BBQOTB the competitors have better things to do than serve food and jump through all the hoops to do so. That leaves the organizers to find food service for the festival like they do at other festival. I know that they’ve tried to find people to do it but for one reason or another it just never works out.
A New Restaurant? (prev. Bass Brothers) Lincoln Park - YYC
Local 510, Local 522, Local (pick a number). That’s what it’s going to be. An offshoot of the 2 pubs downtown. It will cater primarily to the Mount Royal crowd. Not sure about brunch but the food they serve now is pretty darn good AND inexpensive. Cheers!

Ya know why? It’s the the Calgary Health Board! The requirements you have to meet to serve food are very strict. It’s hard to justify the time or stress unfortunately. It’s pretty damn hard to walk around all that great smoked meat and not be able to sample a thing ain’t it???

I'm going to vote for Glory of India. A little on the pricey side but damn good! And here's a little lunch buffet tip: GANGA downstairs next to Flames Central. Pakistani me thinks but all very good. They have goat vindaloo on occasion so you know they're not dumbing the cuisine down for anyone!

BR& and WEST in YYC
WEST is owned by the Concorde Group-Bungalow, Mercury, Sky 360 et al. I poked my head into BR&. They haven't done a single thing to it since it was Rococo. I had a lease ready to sign on the space in 2004 but things didn't work out. I wish them all the best but it's going to be a tough go, especially with Charcut just opening down the block.
Mac & Cheese - Calgary
Howdy! Fred. Palomino owner here. Actually, the mac is made with bleu,manchego, plus white and orange cheddar. It's made to order so bechamel is out of the question. I prefer it baked 'cause the cheese gets all burny. Yum. So we throw some cheese on top and broil it to finish it.
Glad you did it though. We try hard.
Opening in Calgary?
Nope. Concorde Group Victor Choy. Trust me. This place is M-A-S-S-I-V-E. Bigger than the old Ceili's. And indeed a Mercury.
