What should I order at Guu Izakaya?

Is their okonomiyaki the Osaka or Hiroshima style?

Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki

We've tried a few now - been here 3 days so far. Have yet to try Lopez, but I agree Reichan is pretty good, but not as good as Sozo or Denko pretty much at opposite quadrants on the 6th floor in the Full Focus building. I also like the food court feel in the Full Focus building more with everyone yelling at you to come eat at their place (in a very friendly non-confrontational sort of way). We prefer this to the Osaka style by a long shot.

As well, tried the shiru-nashi tantanmen at one of the Bakudans (I think there are a few around town) - was great, and for $2-3 more, you get quite a decent Karage on the side as well.

For Miyajimaguchi, on the short walk from the JR station to the Ferry, if you stay on the right side, you can pick up some sea eel w rice (Anago) to go (usually the line up for a sit down meal is prohibitive) - they pack it up perfectly for the 10 minute ferry ride, we tried Ueno and it was delish. The flavor from the eel was cooked right into the rice and it was a terrific snack to keep us from getting hungry while exploring the island (not that there is a lack of food there, esp oysters everywhere).

Finally, we found a great little izakaya alley right near the South exit of Hiroshima station (if walking out of the station South exit, the Full Focus building would be across the street and to the right, the izakaya alley would be across the street and to the left, 1-2 small blocks away, just past the giant Pachinco building). There'a a vertical sign there saying welcome to Ekime Yokotyou. We ate at Izakaya Sairai (you can find location via google/tripadvisor), and had awesome korean tofu stew, quite good gyu motsu nikomi (although the stuff in Asakusa on Hoppy street is a bit better). They also have fantastic Kalbi (korean short ribs - but done japanese style) and little cut up spicy chilies in a salty umami sauce for 100yen that were to die for. Their sashimi was not the strong point of the meal. All this with some great lettuce salad and a huge Sapporo for around $50 for the two of us (including the $3-4 cover charge for the apps. Solid izakaya food if anyone needs a break from all the noodles around Hiroshima station. They do have an english menu with some pics. The old lady running this place is delightful - seems like a ma and pa joint as we initially went across the alley to the table service restaurant, but were shown across to the counter service part because they were full. They have a strong selection of sake as well it seems. Excellent experience.

Please help me remember the name of a restaurant on bathurst, south of DuPont, no longer exists

I was going to guess the Black Rooster but I guess that was open longer. Still miss those greasy cheap breakfasts.

Sorry, just to clarify. When I wrote 'the others' I meant the Mt Pleasant and Wellsley locations.

In my opinion, the Roy Square (Yonge and Bloor) Biryani House was head and shoulders above the others. I wanted to like the others but they were not even close.

Amsterdam 2015 - what's new

Hi,
We are heading back in May for a few days and are wondering whats new/fantastic/different over the last year or 2. Or more importantly, what's good or still good these days. I have looked at all the old threads, and have not seen much recent new info.

For some perspective some of our previous enjoyable go to's include: the seafood bar, ron gastrobar, prego, marius, various risjtaffels, lunch at Okura, and the japanese pancake guy in the Jordaan.

We're looking at possibly trying Bussia, De Reiger (any tips on when is a good time to go when we are likely to score a table without waiting?), De Kas and De Peper.

We will be staying in the Nine streets area, and are also wondering about good espresso places around - I remember one in the Jordaan (I think it was run by an Aussie) as well as Screaming Beans.

Dinner on Easter Sunday

Thank you very much for all the advice. So far it looks like it's a toss up between Daisho and Yumaghi. Leaning toward the latter because it sounds like a more unquie experience.

Dinner on Easter Sunday

I'm looking to take out my wife for a birthday dinner which happens to be on Easter Sunday. Not surprisingly, many places are closed that night. So far, our top two choices are Origin (which we haven't been to) and Le Select Bistro. We're looking to be relatively central eg within not much more than a five minute drive from Union station - anything within a 15-20 min walk would be a bonus. To give you an idea, we've looked at Buca, George, Note Bene, Joso's, Campangolo all of which are closed/unavailable that night. Any thoughts/other ideas would be appreciated.

Best omakase 2015: Yasu, Yunaghi, Kaji or ?

Went to Kaji twice over the past couple of months (once for my bday, once as a present from a colleague). Both were highly enjoyable, excellent quality ingredients well prepped, consistent. Impeccable service (although certainly not cheap). Did not feel that there was a decline from few years ago. Ingredients were more or less on par with Japan (except the amazing kaiseki stuff we had near Kyoto which blows most away). We are not usually huge eaters, but felt this was quite a large amount of good especially the first time.

Byblos

I went 2 weeks ago. The food was fine/good (nothing remarkable). The service was somewhat obsequious, and everyone at the table was quite annoyed at the attempted upsell at every opportunity. The market price for the fish was quite inflated. The labneh based dishes were quite tasty, but again pricey for the small quantities that are given - the roasted red beets were good, but you get so few...The crispy squid was good as well, but the 'schug' tasted nothing like schug. The space and the people were beautiful. All in all, you can pay the same amount or less for much better meals in similarly beautiful surroundings in Toronto, I do not plan to return. Pretty poor value.

Best soufganyot?(Chanukah donuts)

Bloor west village toward the jane end on the north side has a couple of bakeries that make Eastern European doughnuts....essentially suvganiot. I'm currently in Tel Aviv so they are available everywhere...I'm overdosing. Chocolate filled is popular here these days, I still prefer old school strawberry jam.

Big Butcher All Natural Barbeque on Kipling

I also liked the little burger place on Browns line, they've changed hands a couple of times and I think it's called OBQ burger last I checked, but I have not tried them lately (mainly because burgers priest and five guys are so close). I did try Paul and Sandys on Dundas near Islington a while back and while the product was pretty good, there were some service issues and the whole experience took too long for that type of place in my opinion. Will have to give them another try. Regarding Royal meats, used to love them when they first opened, but lately it seems like it's been run by kids and the excitement is no longer there. Some of their products/sauce is unique and it's nice that they have a patio and parking as well. I also don't mind hitting the little neighbourhood places like Magic Spot occasionally for their family run charm.

Help me get Excited about Ottawa's Food Scene!

You may want to consider Ceylanta - solid Sri Lankan, a bit of a walk, but worth it IMO. The shawarma in Ottawa tends to be Lebanese style BTW.

Queen Margherita Pizza

That is crazy. I refuse to pay for
unless it's a couple of bucks (and then it
still makes me unhappy). I see it as a cost of business (I know the arguments for charging, but it's a low class move as far as I'm concerned, the added few bucks are not worth the PR loss). I will not be going there and paying that, will do takeout at QMP but eat at Terroni or Pizza e Paze.

Mimico, New Toronto & Long Branch restaurants - revised thread!

Went back to Goodlake tonight. Was quite impressed. Had a delish cocktail some apps and shared the short ribs with my wife who had the monkfish prawn dish. Both were very tasty and properly cooked and seasoned. Wines by the glass are reasonable with fair selection. Very happy to have this in the hood.

Lunch for 30 in Jerusalem

Hi,

I'm resurrecting this old thread to see if there are any new options around - How is the food at the Quarter restaurant (it appears to be the closest to the wall). But I think we would be willing to walk an extra 10 minutes or so if the food quality/options merit that. We are in a similar situation, looking at December this year (so outdoor venues are probably not a good idea). Thank you for any thoughts/advice.
