Best omakase 2015: Yasu, Yunaghi, Kaji or ?

Went to Kaji twice over the past couple of months (once for my bday, once as a present from a colleague). Both were highly enjoyable, excellent quality ingredients well prepped, consistent. Impeccable service (although certainly not cheap). Did not feel that there was a decline from few years ago. Ingredients were more or less on par with Japan (except the amazing kaiseki stuff we had near Kyoto which blows most away). We are not usually huge eaters, but felt this was quite a large amount of good especially the first time.

I went 2 weeks ago. The food was fine/good (nothing remarkable). The service was somewhat obsequious, and everyone at the table was quite annoyed at the attempted upsell at every opportunity. The market price for the fish was quite inflated. The labneh based dishes were quite tasty, but again pricey for the small quantities that are given - the roasted red beets were good, but you get so few...The crispy squid was good as well, but the 'schug' tasted nothing like schug. The space and the people were beautiful. All in all, you can pay the same amount or less for much better meals in similarly beautiful surroundings in Toronto, I do not plan to return. Pretty poor value.

The Old Toronto Restaurants you make the wishes for the comeback

ahh Lime Rickey's...I was a busboy there, then got a job as waiter at The Gatherings. Anyone remember Bagel King on Eglinton, or Eddy's on Yonge near hwy 7? Also Chung King and Peters Chung King.

Best soufganyot?(Chanukah donuts)

Bloor west village toward the jane end on the north side has a couple of bakeries that make Eastern European doughnuts....essentially suvganiot. I'm currently in Tel Aviv so they are available everywhere...I'm overdosing. Chocolate filled is popular here these days, I still prefer old school strawberry jam.

Big Butcher All Natural Barbeque on Kipling

I also liked the little burger place on Browns line, they've changed hands a couple of times and I think it's called OBQ burger last I checked, but I have not tried them lately (mainly because burgers priest and five guys are so close). I did try Paul and Sandys on Dundas near Islington a while back and while the product was pretty good, there were some service issues and the whole experience took too long for that type of place in my opinion. Will have to give them another try. Regarding Royal meats, used to love them when they first opened, but lately it seems like it's been run by kids and the excitement is no longer there. Some of their products/sauce is unique and it's nice that they have a patio and parking as well. I also don't mind hitting the little neighbourhood places like Magic Spot occasionally for their family run charm.

Help me get Excited about Ottawa's Food Scene!

You may want to consider Ceylanta - solid Sri Lankan, a bit of a walk, but worth it IMO. The shawarma in Ottawa tends to be Lebanese style BTW.

Bloor west restaurant for family dinner

On Bloor around Royal York - Momiji, Casa Barcelona. Price range is moderate. I've done family dinners at Barcelona and it worked out well.

Queen Margherita Pizza

That is crazy. I refuse to pay for
unless it's a couple of bucks (and then it
still makes me unhappy). I see it as a cost of business (I know the arguments for charging, but it's a low class move as far as I'm concerned, the added few bucks are not worth the PR loss). I will not be going there and paying that, will do takeout at QMP but eat at Terroni or Pizza e Paze.

Mimico, New Toronto & Long Branch restaurants - revised thread!

Went back to Goodlake tonight. Was quite impressed. Had a delish cocktail some apps and shared the short ribs with my wife who had the monkfish prawn dish. Both were very tasty and properly cooked and seasoned. Wines by the glass are reasonable with fair selection. Very happy to have this in the hood.

Lunch for 30 in Jerusalem

I'm resurrecting this old thread to see if there are any new options around - How is the food at the Quarter restaurant (it appears to be the closest to the wall). But I think we would be willing to walk an extra 10 minutes or so if the food quality/options merit that. We are in a similar situation, looking at December this year (so outdoor venues are probably not a good idea). Thank you for any thoughts/advice.

Yonaka - every bit as good a reason as Raku to venture off-strip

Pretty good, but not quite as good as Raku. I did like their desserts (Chocobeet icecream/gnash and Mango panacotta type desserts). Good value for money.

Saravana Bhavan - Any opinions about the food?

I'm chiming in to note my several experiences at the Mississauga SB have all been positive. Slightly cafeteria style seating/room, but clean and relatively quick service. We usually go for the veg dosa and special dinner with some rava keysari for dessert. Sometimes adding tomato/onion/chili uttapam (and using the various dishes in the thali with the uttapam and/or dosa).

Regarding fish and milk, from my knowledge this is not a widespread custom, and only some observant jews practice it. It's different from milk and meat ie. doesn't require a waiting period, and can be consumed in the same meal as long as it's a separate course and the cutlery/dishes are changed over etc.

Help me find this Moroccan restaurant - Toronto

There was a place on the north side of Eglinton near Mt Pleasant. I'm having a hard time remembering the name... Closed around 8 years ago I think.

Tsukiji outer market - recommended vendors?

Was there on Dec 30 - could not believe how busy it was (mid morning). Especially towards outer market, was difficult to move around.

First trip to Kyoto - a few questions please

I can vouch for YOSHIMURA soba. Two doors away from Citadenes, very close to the Mcdonalds as well. I don't think they have an english sign. Fantastic soba - can watch them making it downstairs. Lunch is relatively inexpensive.

For Tofu - Sagano is fantastic! They have a lunch set menu, I think this was around $40 each + drinks, but I can't remember for sure. They are close to the Bamboo forest in Arashiyama, actually in a side alley very close to the Tenryuji Temple. Great experience - make sure you check out the bamboo forest.

Omen Pantocho was also good for udon - also relatively inexpensive (ie. 2 adults, 2 kids - dinner with 2 beers = $100). Make sure you walk down the Pantocho alley before or after dinner.

For Kaiseki - we went to Ohara and stayed at Seryo Ryokan- dinner was awesome there...not a cheap experience though-but I felt it was worth it. Our kids had sukiyaki there - it was divine.

Looking for Vietnam recommendations: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Hoi An

Just got back - we had some very good food, our highlights:

Luong Son (Bo Tung Xeo) - street foodish (ie cheap with 98% locals) in a covered restaurant setting (not expensive at all). Best - grilled at your table beef and ostrich (diy). Also has crazy stuff on the menu (for us anyhow) eg Goat breast and penis, scorpion etc. But plenty of more normal choices as well. Service is really friendly, good cheap beer too.

Bit Tet Chim Quay at corner of Hang Buom and Hang Guay - same type as above (essentially street food, but you're in a covered somewhat organized seating area). Highlights - spare ribs with lemon grass (small pieces, easy to eat), beef with noodles, chicken fried rice type concoction (sorry, did not remember the exact names) - but this place is awesome, again it's also dirt cheap

We're very careful about what we eat (ie, no ice, ever, no fresh veg - unless at a 4-5 star hotel/resort) - we do eat fresh herbs in pho etc. The four of us did not get sick once during our 3 week trip - we did eat lots of street food, we were just picky/careful.

Also in Hanoi - must try the egg coffee! (google it)

As well - get your hepatitis vaccines and anything others that your travel medicine clinic recommends
