Tortilleria El Metate, Springfield
Has anyone been here? Apparently, there's a restaurant as well as the hand made tortillas. Could only find a couple of reviews out there.
Thanks.
Golfeados: Venezuelan Sticky buns
I got curious. Haloumi, a Cypriot cheese of goat and/or sheep milk, was suggested at this website: http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2011/11/golfeados-venezuelan-sticky-buns-recipe.html
Good luck if his birthday hasn't come and gone.
Cottage Grove?
I've not tried it, but there have been positive postings for Big Stuff BBQ on Main in Cottage Grove.
Try searching the many Eugene postings, too.
Have fun.
downtown dinner: Heathman? Departure? ...
Trip report:
Higgins was really good. We thoroughly enjoyed beer, wine, and pasta in the bar. Thank you for the rec.
Oops, for convenience reasons, set out to try Urban Farmer the next night. We thought prices were exorbitant and settled our bill for the beer and iced tea (a no alcohol driving evening for one of us) which was awful, IMO. Never done that.
Then ate a fairly quick bite at the Heathman's bar; Burgers were pretty straight ahead and good, Happy Hour price was refreshing at that point, fries were cold, oversalted, greasy, and limp. Oh, well. HA & VL made up for it.

Stopped at Plaza Morelia today and it was wonderful! Lamb tacos and lamb soup were oh so good! Partner had a carne asada burrito (his acid test) and enjoyed it a lot. Helpful folks, friendly place, fair prices, oh if I only lived closer.
Out of curiosity, Amecameca, did you ever get a chance to verify Los Temos #2 in Portland?
Good cheap eats in Eugene OR?
I totally agree with you, Amecameca, that Richmond/Vancouver, BC is far better than what I've found in greater Seattle at least!
I also hate to waste a long travel, thirtyeyes, which is why I seem to end up at HA & VL for their most special, early soup when I'm in that area. I can't quite bring myself to try Ocean City - maybe someday.
downtown dinner: Heathman? Departure? ...
We're staying at The Heathman and going to the Newmark Theater Thursday night. Looking for nearby and easy dining that night. Heathman gets really mixed reviews, both in the dining room and the bistro bar. Departure is a bit further than we hope to walk, but looks interesting though pricey. My one experience with Shigezo was REALLY crowded and really not very good.
Suggestions?
Thanks.
Good cheap eats in Eugene OR?
Some good ideas, TE. And that would be both Newman's Fish Grotto on Coburg (with grill choice) and the "original" on Willamette, right? Slightly off topic and area, but where did you have dim sum in Portland? As the OP said, Portland's Vietnamese choices are terrific. And then there's always a drive north to north Salem for really good Mexican food!
whole dried persimmons in Eugene or Roseburg?
Never mind, no worries. I found them in 6 packs at Kings Asian Market.
whole dried persimmons in Eugene or Roseburg?
I've looked for whole dried persimmons in Sunrise Market but they don't have them now.
Anyone know of a source? Any kind will work. I've only found sliced ones online.
Thanks.
Shanti's Indian Cuisine - Roseburg
Shanti's Indian Cuisine in Roseburg is a really nice addition to our short list, IMO.
We've not tried the lunch buffet (I've heard that it is toned more bland and less chili spicy, etc. with limited choices but lots of food people like) but the 4 dishes we've eaten have been good. We're not well versed in the cuisine, but then, this is Roseburg. So far, Veggie Biryani, Lamb Vindaloo, Chicken Biryani, and Mutter Paneer have been tasty with spice variety. To both of our tastes, "Hot" is nice and brings forward flavors. Atmosphere is informal and pleasant.
IMO, definitely worthy of supporting here.

Best Mexican Food In Salem
About a month ago (I apologize for my reporting delay) I stopped at El Pollo Feliz on a Friday that was not very warm (I apologize for not heeding your advice!). They had no rabbit, but their chicken, pork and beef tacos were all on special and the woman recommended them. I had all three. They were very good, but not outstanding, IMHO. Clearly, I need to give this place another try.
Before I come through your area again, I'll be sure and get the latest scoop from you, Amecameca. Thanks.
Hello Thai Cuisine - Winston (Roseburg area)
Finally had lunch at Hello Thai Cuisine in Winston at 273 SW Main St. IMO, it was very good! And the service was very attentive. We both had their Thai noodle soup. Of choices given, we requested "good and spicy". It was and had nice flavor depths. We'll return as I don't like to go too positive with only one visit. But it seems to be a really nice addition to this area!!!
Beyond the Pho -- Portland's Other Vietnamese Noodles
I'm reposting this from a new thread into an old one in hopes of getting clues. Being from out of town, I returned to Ngoc Han Bun Bo Hue (which I've thoroughly enjoyed several times) last month to discover it was gone. In its place was Huynh Gia. We enjoyed the pho, especially since we can't get ANY Vietnamese food near home, but I was disappointed in what I tasted as an over-played star anise broth.
We did get to Ha & VL once and found it terrific!
I'm planning for a small group of us in November and we'll want to eat at about 4 PM. Are Yen Ha and Pho Oregon (on NE 82nd) really our good choices? Since we'll be further south, is Bun Bo Hue a good choice? Is there anything else in that neighborhood that's really good?
Thanks for clues.

Best Mexican in Eugene
In my sampling so far, Amecameca's suggestions have been totally terrific!
If you happen to get south to Roseburg, Tino's taco truck offers great tastes. The main truck is off I-5 at Garden Valley Blvd. at the Shell station just west of the freeway. It has 3 big tables. It is always busy. I understand his other truck is off I-5 at Harvard but I've not been there, yet.

is favored by some. I've enjoyed it, it's definitely not a Taco Time, but IMHO, it's just not at the same level of deliciousness as Tino's or Salem's places.
Cranbrook? Creston?
Thanks for the clue, ig.
As it turns out, we may not be heading into the Kootenays for my SO's BDay as he's thinking we may go explore the coast instead. But we'll head up to the Kootenays sometime in the future for SURE, so The Cottage is on my list.
Thanks.
Cranbrook? Creston?
Will be visiting Cranbrook and Creston areas in a week. It's been awhile.
Creston: A few years ago, we rather enjoyed Aldo & Co. and always found Blueberry Patch to be a pleasant choice.
Any updated clues out there?
Thanks.
Best Mexican Food In Salem
We finally made it to Los Temos. The corn tortillas were absolutely terrific and nothing like I've ever tasted. My partner said he has not eaten hand made tortillas like that for 35 years since family taquerias in agricultural central California. The birria de chivo was wonderful! I didn't go with the plato since he wanted a burrito di chivo (which he enjoyed).
Next time's hard choice will be Plaza Morelia or Habanero. Or El Pollo Feliz/Mariscos Playa Azul? Or?
Thanks, Amecameca!

Oregon Saturday markets: From Medford to the coast (through corvallis)
I don't really know price comparisons. Roseburg is a rural area; Eugene is a bit more urban in many ways. Roseburg should be pretty basic but keep in mind that the season is really late this year, especially up here, so your choices may be more limited than you'd like.
Another option, which is a bit further out of your way in Roseburg, is Kruse's Farm Market, just off Garden Valley Rd. at 532 Melrose Rd. They often have a U Pick, too. Some of the produce they sell at the market is not local, but it is all well marked. Look carefully for freshness.
Oregon Saturday markets: From Medford to the coast (through corvallis)
I haven't been this year yet to Roseburg's - http://www.uvfarmersmarket.com/index.html - it's been such a late year, but that might work for you. It's a pretty easy on and off I-5.
And Eugene's - http://www.eugenesaturdaymarket.org/ - is talked about a lot, though I admit I've never been.

It looks like Shark's is still around.

Had great cioppino there a few years ago.
Asian food in Eugene, OR
We had a really good Thai lunch at Sabai Cafe and Bar in the Oakway Center. A bit more expensive than most but hands down better than anything else around in our opinions. Pad kee mow was terrific.
Croatian/Bosnian/Serbian food/restaurants?
daleka, I've read on this board that people love Drina Daisy, a Bosnian restaurant, in Astoria (a very loose interpretation of the greater Portland area). It sounds good. Last I looked, they're closed Mon. & Tues.

Mariachi Loco in Roseburg, OR
In addition to the promising offerings I had the one time I've been to Mariachi Loco so far, Los Dos Amigos - SUTHERLIN, recently got a new manager who basically moved from their downtown location. I've enjoyed some good food like Chili Verde and Chili Colorado there. So there's some food at both places that doesn't cater to many people's requirement for cheese drowning. Though north Salem seems to be the town for Mexican food, as best I can tell so far.
El Tapatio, Cottage Grove
JDB, Look at the recent thread Great Mexican Food in Salem. If you're ever up that way, it sounds like Salem is the town. My limited experience so far leans that way, too.
But have you tried Tino's in Roseburg? And bbqboy says there are some good taco trucks in Medford/Ashland.
