How to Eat Vegetarian in Columbia, South Carolina

What about Al Amir? They are back downtown and they have a lot of vegetarian choices. The brick oven is now in operation. Makes Tea Room look lame!

The Admiral (A'ville, NC) : I didn't understand

We had the shortribs when I was there too, and I agree ... dreamy. And those crispy shallots!

The Admiral (A'ville, NC) : I didn't understand

I'm not sure - we had called the night before and were told they were full, so we went ahead and made one. I think folks were eating outside too, although there was a wait.

The Admiral (A'ville, NC) : I didn't understand

We made reservations, and I highly recommend that. We called for one night, and they were booked already, although I am sure you could just show up, but it looked like a long wait for some people when we were there .. you can eat at the bar which is good for the drop in crowd. It was just so good!

The Admiral (A'ville, NC) : I didn't understand

We went this week and I cannot agree more with your opinion. Everything we had was beyond fantastic and it was a bargain for the quality AND quantity of food. The pork belly small plate was crispy and pretty out of hand, with local mushrooms and a pecorino crouton that was perfect, with a beautiful local egg. Short rib small plate was not that small and extremely yummy. Halibut, grits and collards with chorizo saffron broth ... I could go on and on, but I will just say I am so glad we tried it and we will be going back. I agree that the chefs at this place are amazing. Our waitress was attentive and good with the advice regarding the menu. This is my new favorite!

New Philly Cheesesteak place in Columbia SC Vista - anyone tried it?

It still rocks the house. It's worth the drive, plus you get lively conversation from the owner. Great fries too. I'm glad to hear you agree with me - I always respect your opinion!

New Philly Cheesesteak place in Columbia SC Vista - anyone tried it?

I think it's just okay ... and it irks me that he wants to charge so much extra for sharp provolone. I prefer DL McLaughlin's out at the lake.

Pizza, Columbia, SC

I could not agree more. Against my better judgement, I went back yesterday at lunch and the pizza was terrible. I had pepperoni slices - the crust was like something out of a frozen pizza nightmare - no charring, crispiness or crunch, let alone taste, and there was just nothing good about it. I don't care if they use organic ingredients, it just is not good. That's it for me!

Edna's #1 Columbia SC

Edna's rules! Try finding something quicker and better around Cottontown and North Main - it cannot be beat!

Charleston, SC, burger assessments

Beware the burger at Rue de Jean - we went recently and I ordered a burger cooked medium - it was served to me practically raw, with bloody juice soaking the whole bottom of the bun. I cut it in half as I usually do since it is pretty big, and it was still cold inside. It took forever to get our server's attention and once we did, he gave me quite the attitude. When the burger was reserved to me, they had just thrown it on the grill and recooked it, slapped a new piece of cheese on top and replaced the bun. I could not believe how gross it looked and tasted - I was beyond irritated and probably won't go back for awhile. Not sure what was going on that day. When I brought it to the attention of the "manager" on duty, he didn't care and didn't apologize. It will be a while before I go back.

Al Amir comes back to downtown Columbia SC!

Thank heavens, Al Amir has come back to downtown Columbia! It's open right now - we went last night and chowed down on all our favorites. They are still working on their brick oven, so no damascus bread yet, but Mohammed says it will be ready soon! It's on South Main near Moe's and across from where the Towers used to be.

Pizza, Columbia, SC

Don't waste your time. I tried slices at lunch - they had just made the pie so it had not been sitting around. Not that good - definitely nothing special. Not bad, but for the price ... no way, plus the crust seemed a little "premade". Then we ordered a whole wheat pie to go - pricey - 2 ingredients and the total was close to $19! It was a little better, but we won't go back. Employees seemed a little clueless on both trips (one of whom appeared to be the owner!)

Bagels in Columbia, SC

I am fairly certain the owner passed away early this year.

Help in Columbia, SC

I have not been to Saluda's in a long time but I was not impressed. I think it has changed hands a few times. Better choices: Motor Supply Co., Terra, Solstice, Mr. Friendly's. Garibaldi's is fine also.

Thai Lotus - Columbia, SC - what's the deal?

Help! We have been faithful patrons of Thai Lotus for several years. Love the lunch buffet, and often go in the evenings or get take out. Last night was the worst. We called in an order, and when we arrived to pick it up, we saw a handwritten sign on the door that said "investor needed" - I thought "uh oh". When we got home, we were very disappointed in our food. The soup had about one fourth of the amount of ingredients it usually has, although it tasted good. Our entree had shrunk from the usual size to a smaller take out container. That was bad enough, but we ordered one of our favorites (which is always good) - Basil Chicken - and it was terrible. First off, there was no curry or sauce like there usually is - no taste whatsover - it might as well have been a plain chicken stir fry with A LOT more veggies than chicken. But the absolute worst was that there was no thai basil to be found in the dish (there is usually plenty) - it had been replaced with a bunch of dried regular basil that made the dish taste even worse - honestly, I could not eat mine and my husband was pretty disgusted too. Dried regular basil? Come on! And way too much of it too!

We also went recently on a Monday at lunch to find no lunch buffet. We left.

What is going on?

Late night weekend dining in Crabtree area of Raleigh NC

Yes, we will have a car. Where is Glenwood South and what can you recommend there? Many thanks!

Late night weekend dining in Crabtree area of Raleigh NC

Anything good. Hoping to avoid the chains, but if there is a local favorite chain, by all means, tell me. Thanks!

Late night weekend dining in Crabtree area of Raleigh NC

Any suggestions for late night (like after 9:00 pm) dining in (or around) the Crabtree area of Raleigh on a weekend???

Greenville, SC - Wednesday - Friday - looking for your favs

Thanks, these sound like good possibilities. I'll be sure to let you all know where we went!

Greenville, SC - Wednesday - Friday - looking for your favs

Looking for your favorites bars and restaurants (no chains) in Greenville SC - mainly dinner from Wed-Friday. Any kind of food or price, as long as it's good. Also looking for some spots with good beer or microbreweries. Lay them on me, people! Thanks!

Greenville SC - Downtown food Wed-Fri

Thanks Danna - I always enjoy your postings and I appreciate the help here - I'll post on what we ate after we go.

Greenville SC - Downtown food Wed-Fri

What's good in downtown Greenville SC these days? Any kind of food is fine as long as it's good or not a chain. We'll be there for lunches and dinners and would also like some recs for a good brewpub or bar if there is one. Downtown is best, but if there are other great places, bring them on!

Keaton's in Statesville and the "dipped" chicken phenomenon

My husband (a big Keaton's fan) tried the dipped chicken at BBQ King last weekend and was pretty disappointed. He won't be going there again, at least for that. Nothing can touch Keaton's in both our opinions. I know it has its warts, but take it in stride - the chicken is worth it. I have heard that Ted's Kickin' Chicken in Winston-Salem has a similar dipped chicken, but I have not tried it. Anyone else?

Winston-Salem

You might want to try West End Cafe - it's not too far from the stadium, they have great food and drinks and there should be something for everyone.

Edisto

Has anyone tried Edisto Eats? I know it's new and has meat and other items to cook at home, but what's the selection like? And does anyone know if they have any prepared foods?

Burgers in Columbia, SC?

For a thinner but good homemade burger, try Palmetto Sandwich Shop on Sumter. Righteous fries as well. Mac's on Laurel is a also an old favorite of mine - I have been eating at both of them for over 20 years and keep going back. I do like Rockaway, and Mr. Friendly's has a good burger as well if you want something "fancier". Zesto is pretty good also.

best bread in Columbia, SC

I could not agree more. I love love love all her breads. The prices are ridiculously affordable and the bread is awesome. In fact, I had some ciabatta for lunch today. Scrumptious! Do not miss out on this.

Momo's Bistro, Columbia, SC

Yuck. It's overpriced and overpretentious and I would say the food is so-so at best. I would go just about anyplace else. Motor Supply, Garibaldi's, Mr. Friendly's, Gervais & Vine ...

Farewell, North Carolina

I'm so glad you had a good time and good food. Thanks for posting about your experiences. I haven't tried some of the places you tried, so it's good to hear about them. Come back soon, and go to Keaton's :)
