Birthday dinner on a budget

My friend is taking out out for my birthday, but lost her job recently so she can't spend much. She's not a very adventurous eater, so no Asian or any places that serve lots of beef. She lives in the East Village, which would be okay for me, or any downtown, Gramercy, Village places. Would like it to be someplace with a nice atmosphere, since it is my birthday. Any thoughts? Thanks!

French onion soup w/ chicken stock?

I have a friend who doesn't eat beef. She told me how much she loves French onion soup, but wishes she could find a restaurant that does it with chicken stock instead. Anyone know of a place in Manhattan?

Astor Place recommendations for tonight

Friend from Paris is visiting. She doesn't like super casual restaurants. So what would be reasonable in price but not too East Village-y in the Astor Place area? Only time I've been at The Smith for dinner, my eardrums almost burst! But something similar would be great, without all the din.

NYE - Regular Menu - Downtown

Made a reservation several weeks ago at Fat Radish, and am now being told last minute that they have just decided to do a special menu instead of their regular menu. (#%$!!&*#)

Any other fun downtown places with good food, not too expensive, for a dinner (about 9ish) on NYE? Will not be staying till midnight.

Casa Don Puglisi Modica Chocolates

Does anyone know why these are not being carried in the U.S. anymore? Tried to get info via their website, but that's either being redone or gone. I'm one of the people who loved them.

Equivalent of defunct Cedar Tavern?

What's a current equivalent to the defunct Cedar Tarvern in Manhattan -- preferably downtown? Looking for a casual place for drinks and food, where a large group of friends can meet.

Midtown restaurants for very large groups>

Since my last post was removed for some mysterious reason that I still don't comprehend, let me rephrase my question. Looking for a a classy, but not stuffy, midtown restaurant that can accommodate a very large group of people. Maybe something that has a private room that they can set up for us. We've done this before at places like the old Russian Tea Room and Au Bar, etc. Thanks in advance.
