Matzo Brittle

Please give credit to Marcy Goldman whose recipe this is, and David Lebovitz, who tweaked it a bit.

Jersey Farms Crushed Tomatoes - Source???

Hi Acrowder - did you ever find the NJ local tomatoes? I've been searching and checking Fairway and Fresh Direct obsessively, but can't find them. Definitely my favorite, even over the best imported San Marzanos.

Super-Frugal Meals -- around $1 per serving -- Beyond Rice and Beans

back to tortilla: check out Despana on Broome St, which I would assume it a pretty legitimate Spanish food purveyor - there are about 6 variations on the traditional tortilla de papas, all delicious.

Best Brooklyn Pizza (or Must Eat Brooklyn Staples)!

a good list but you need to know: Di Fara's fabulous but very very long wait, minimal and not pleasant seating, but if you go, go on Saturday (parking); Lucali's excellent, no reservations, get there ahead of opening; Sams on Court (a sleeper) reminds me of Savoia Restaurant in Jackson Heights during the 40's (before I was born) and 50's whose pizza I can still taste, old-fashioned, very good pizza, walk right in; Totonnos - haven't been there since they re-opened after the fire, but pizza is excellent!, will wait there too.

Don't miss the Red Hook Ball fields

Franny's: hip contemporary delicious pizza, also crowded and no reservations and somewhat of a scene, always helps to go early, can eat in garden if weather OK

is smorgasburg still on? great food truck outside food scene in williamsburg, google it

Favorite Marcella Hazan recipes?

I had a shocking week in which I learned that four people I work closely with had never heard of Joan Baez - all under 40, and also ran into a number of people who cook or who are in some way affiliated with food had never heard of Marcella. Age! It really feels like I've crossed the divide.
Two favorites (?from Classic, but not home now): pork loin braised in milk and Tuscan meatloaf with porcini which was stupendou (and I used really excellent organic dark turkey from the Greenmarket).

Cake Box in Bay Terrace - R.I.P.

Hertlein's and Aster Bakery were fixtures on Bell Blvd in the 50's when I was growing up. My uncle walked down Bell early every morning for fresh bread and rolls. My clearest memory is the box of bakery cookies that my grandmother would always have available from one of these two bakeries. Cakebox was the newcomer after the Bay Terrace shopping center opened, and their breads (rye, corn, pletzels) were stellar. The distant past although somewhat foggy stills evokes such intense nostalgia.

Paula Peck's Cookbooks.

NO! Hold on to Paula Peck's cookbooks! She only wrote two that I know of. She was a truly gifted cook who anticipated so many trends in food and cooking that were inspired and innovated back in the 60's. I treasure my falling apart copies, especially my Dell 75 cents Art of Fine Baking paperback held together with scotch tape - I've never made better brownies than hers. She was a serious baker who approached learning and developing technique rigorously. Read her description of learning to make croissants!
