Group of 15 Girls for Casual Fun Meal
Hi All,
I am a bit out of the loop these days and need some recommendations for a good spot for a bachelorette dinner. We don't want anything crazy or themed just a nice casual spot with great food that can accomodate about 15 of us.
Can be any cuisine...preferably 14th street or below...
Restaurants that I've been to and like to give you an idea of what we go for:
prune
the little owl
mercadito
lupa
crispo
many thanks!
Sunnyside CFC....
one of the top 5 restaurant in Sunnyside????????? um, no. I'm sorry, I can't even take that sentence seriously.
The place is horrendous. I took a chance and went in and placed an order. I was leary as I sat there waiting, but it was too late. I brought it home and it was nasty. My pepper steak was grayish looking and the steamed chicken and broccoli I got for my son had a long hair in it. GAG. Plus they did not steam the broccoli to soft as requested...even though the hair prevented me from serving it to him anyway.
I will stick with Mr. Wonton on Queens Boulevard. While not stellar, it is pretty good.... and clean(er)
FH Trader Joe's---Oct. 26th Opening Day !!!
i would definitely stick with the Q53. it's an express bus so it'll get you where you want to be much faster than the local Q29. also it leaves you on woodhaven and metro...alot closer than 80th and cooper.
FH Trader Joe's---Oct. 26th Opening Day !!!
you will get off the Q53 (since we're in queens) at metropolitan avenue and woodhaven. ring the bell when you see saint john's cemetary on your right...it'll be the only cemetary on woodhaven. you will then cross woodhaven....then metro and walk east one block. you'll see it, big staples and michael's signs are already up.
depending on traffic, the travel time could vary.... once you get onto woodhaven blvd it is only two stops and should take no longer than about 5-10 minutes (tops).
Help! Need correct recipe for Molly Stevens' Short Ribs Braised in Porter Ale with Maple-Rosemary Glaze!
i have made this dish a few times and have always used parchment as i really don't have wax paper in the house. go ahead and use parchment...
the recipe is wonderful!
Romantic Dinner along the 7 train?
sapori d'ischia in woodside. 37th ave and 56th street. get off at 52nd street stop....
very cozy, romantic...

Wine shop in Jackson Heights?
the closest subway would be the M to metropolitan avenue in middle village (by kmart).
otherwise you could take the R or V to woodhaven and bus it on the Q29.
Cheesesteak Factory
it looks like it is called sal's cheesesteak now---well the place on QB in sunnyside. i know it was for sale. i guess it might have been bought. i walked by yesterday and there wasn't many about and the little tvs weren't on. looked kinda dismal. i have to admit i kinda liked their cheesesteaks with onions and peppers!
Best Ice Cream in Queens (other than Eddie's)
how's pop's on jamaica avenue in woodhaven? i used to go there as a kid and we loved it!
Dazie's Restraunt
i think the service is great and i love the bar, however, my last 2 meals in there were bad.
i've been told stick to the specials...it seems a lot of the regular dishes are nuked!
Borscht in NYC?
in warmer weather veselka offers a vegetarian borscht...however, it disappears in winter....they do serve a hot borscht with meat in both summer and winter...
the new bliss
i think it might have been a rush job---that is opening the place too fast. the majority of the kinks should be worked out after a few weeks of opening. the first things that turned me off were the typos all over the menu! there's no excuse for that...it was posted in the window a good deal before it opened. get that straight first. to me that seems thoughtless and rushed. take the time to do it right. plus the food was bad and service not so hot...
first impressions are hard to break. i'm not sure i want to go back!
Chic and Cheap in Astoria/LIC?
i love bistro 33 on ditmars and 21 or 22nd. it's cute, small, relatively cheap french/asian fusion. pretty varied menu ... lots of appetizers and rolls and quite a few entrees, interesting drinks.
The Grind Sunnyside. Terrible Service
ok, the grind was semi-decent when it first opened. the coffee is good, some of the baked goods, pretty good.
after my last trip, i will not be returning.
it started off bad and got progressively worse.
this was a saturday morning around 9:30am
we ordered a tea and a coffee, a breakfast taco and a crepe. the tea was ICE cold. we ordered hot! there was no half and half in the jugs. we brought the tea back to the counter and i heard the girls discussing that the one thermos or whatever did not work. umm ok, so why are they using it? then i asked for the half and half and they gave me the container. fine, but why not fill the jugs after i told them it was empty? whatever.
my husband's taco came out after a bit. and i sat there waiting and waiting for my crepe. a couple who had came in after us was also waiting for a toasted croissant...i heard them asking for it, then asking for it to go, then saying they could no longer wait and that they would be back to get their money back. as one of the girls (the nicer one) walked by me i politely asked where my breakfast was (my husband had finished his). i said i didn't want to give any hassle as they had just got yelled at by the croissant couple. she said she was new and didnt know how long it took to make. at this point we had been sitting there 20 minutes. then another girl (the nasty one) behind the counter told me with a bit of an attitude that they make the crepes from scratch... i really didn't give her a chance to continue i answered that i make crepes from scratch and they literally take minutes! so i said i'll give it five minutes...so i waited. nothing. i went up to the counter and asked for my money back and the nice girl said ok and the nasty one said no way. they kinda went back and forth whether or not to give me my money (funny how the new one said they could give me my money back). THEN, the nasty one said that they had just opened and that the batter had to be made from scratch. i wasn't having it. basically, i told them that when a couple or a group comes into a restaurant, cafe or whatever that they are served at the same time. if i had been at the diner down the block we would receive our breakfasts at the same time and that there was no excuse. they could give me my money back or i would never return. the nasty one persisted no. so i went into the tip jar and took my 2 dollars back and said i would never return!
my question is...if they "just opened" why were the milk jugs empty, why was the tea cold?
regardless of when they opened, a table's a table and should be served at the same time.
end of story. anyway, i won't be back.
i'll walk over to aubergine, where the coffee and service better are far superior.
Mexican seafood and cheese
good question...
here in new york i have had quite a few mexican seafood dishes with cheese....
quesadillas & burritos with shrimp and cheese and fish tacos..in particular tilapia with manchego cheese...
whether or not this is authentic, i'm not sure..
Cookbook of the Month: September through February 2007-2008
i second sally schneider's "a new way to cook" for january. delicious recipes, a touch lighter, without substituting the flavors we all love so much. it's a nice perspective and really a new way to cook. the techniques are pretty cool.
a julia book would be nice for november or february...
oh and also...the silver palate could be a nice option for october.
just a thought---why not something like feast by nigella for december....its a nice mix of baking and cooking.
Eddie's Soda Shop in Queens
my favorite sundae is coffee with marshmallow combo. kinda sounds like a weird combo, but it is so good!
the new bliss
i definitely would not call the lighting intoxicating. it's really bright and somewhat sterile for me. quaint down the block has more of an atmosphere.
Top Chef - Ep. 4
dont get me wrong ...i've drank plenty of them without food though!
Top Chef - Ep. 4
a cocktail is served with food. hence cocktail parties...without the food, you would have a lot of very drunk people!
Celebratory, romantic resto for two in NW Queens
we actually went to bistro 33 for our 1st year anniversary about 2 weeks ago. we had reservations at blue hill in manhattan and we cancelled and walked in to bistro 33...because kinda the same reasons as justpaula....we just didn't feel like trecking into manhattan after being there all week long.
bistro 33 was great! the service was awesome, the food outstanding. and while not really romantic, we had a really nice time, it wasn't rushed, we lingered on with our sangria after paying the bill.
we loved it!
Bliss Bistro a Disappointment
those are my thoughts exactly. the food ranged from ok somewhat tasty-ish to really bad.
not worth it. it's a shame. we could use a nice place like that in the neighborhood. for now, quaint has to hold down that fort itself.
Bistro 33 reopens
wow, we went this weekend and it was such a treat. we had three appetizers, two rolls and an entree....and an apple crepe (not a flapjack anymore, i guess) with caramel sauce. everything was amazing. standouts were the crab salad, the island roll...
and of course the apple crepe. the service was so nice!
oh---and the white wine sangria, very good for a nice warm night.
Top Chef 3 - Ep. 3
yes she should have made her own sausage. a top chef should know how. she had plenty of time.
Toronto pseudo-hound visiting Maspeth..please help!
rosa's pizza on 69th street and grand avenue is fantastic. the best pizza in queens for sure. he should definitely go there!
for a burger he should hop in a 5 minute cab ride to donovan's, roosevelt avenue & 58th street in woodside (next neighborhood over). voted nyc's best burger a few times. really, really delicious. it's an irish-american bar, so they can definitely have some beers and watch sports there too.
if they like indian, there's tangra masala on grand avenue...and 86 or 87 street. it's actually indian style chinese cuisine. very interesting and tasty!
fame diner on grand avenue and 71 or 71 st is ok for breakfasts...
stop inn diner on roosevelt and 61st in woodside is GREAT for diner style food...and irish specialties, they make a great irish breakfast...plus...there are a ton of bars all around it.
and for thai...there's the famous sripaphai, amazing. it too is in woodside, 65th and i think 39th avenue. you can search it for more specific directions. it's a big favorite on this board.
all of these places are casual and cheap.
BURGERS!!!
oh ok...i got a bad place for you! alpha donuts on QB in sunnyside, people ove it at 4am. you have to check it out! nasty. the cook/waiter whatever reheated french fries and put them on my plate with his bare hands. haha...and i ate cause it was the wee hours of the morning and i just didn't care...
BURGERS!!!
im not understanding why you have the water taxi beach on there. i wouldn't consider that a burger place at all. it's just a "beach" bar that happens to have some food.
i've only had the hot dogs. they do the job when you're drunk..
BURGERS!!!
i'm really surprised you didn't put donovan's or stop inn on your list for queens! they're top on my list.
