Well that covers the ads...but not the second part

Leff chronicles site sale

Should be fascinating to see how Jim's story jumps from a vow of no advertising/no sucking to .... today

Is CH usage down?

uptown jimmy hot the nail on the head.

oh, and the fact that this thread almost was hijacked by the cheesecake factory fan club proves the point better than any retort ever could

over and out (for good)

Is CH usage down?

Well, this is my first visit in about 6 months. I used to post every day back in 1999, early 2000s. Basically, CH has become somewhat irrelevant. It's a combination of the vast number of other great blogs & boards, the difficult format, the surly admins, the technical issues, the quality dropping while the user population rose... Add them all together and you get a not-very-enjoyable user experience. I know I am not very interested anymore, I'm not surprised others feel the same. Mr. Leff likes to jump in and make his M&M comparison right around this point, but as I told him the last 2 times I posted, the soul of Chowhound has been compromised (like it or not)

steakhouse with great beer list

Or any restaurant that serves an excellent steak that has a great beer selection, draft or bottle. Suggestions? Thanks.

How has Chowhound changed your life? [Moved from General Topics]

An apt comparison Jim but hardly ironic. I'd rather enjoy a quiet intelligent conversation elsewhere than try to listen for the three good conversations in an auditorium of yammerers while you're saying I should start a fourth. I often liken Chowhound to International Soup Kitchen. Great when it was a small, personal, quality experience. Not so good when it's a mass market franchise. Sure, you may get an occasional stellar serving of bisque, but what was once a must-have destination is now more of an occasional dabbling that never matches up to the original. This isn't a complaint, merely an observation - even the Rolling Stones can't rebottle the lightning they had in the 70s...

How has Chowhound changed your life? [Moved from General Topics]

When it first started, Chowhound changed my life in that I spent a lot more time tapping on the keyboard sharing the wealth of info I collected on out-of-the-way dining places while living in NY for 40 years. I also learned a lot about out-of-the-way places I hadn't been to before. It was marvelous. But, alas, good things do not usually last forever and sadly Chowhound morphed and changed and I got pulled under by the flood of new users, vast quantities of posts and so much more chaff than wheat. So Chowhound changed my life once again and I got a lot of time back in that I no longer found Chowhound a "must read" as good new info was tougher to find and seemed to be rarer. This topic has been beaten to death on many threads but, as an old timer I figured I would mention it on one of my now-infrequent visits. I know you hate to hear this kind of thing Jim but your M&M theory doesn't scale and neither does this site. But thanks for the memories...

I Miss EL TEDDY'S

Any tips on where to go to recreate the Teddy's bar experience - excellent properly made margaritas with top ingredients, and homemade chips & salsa? I miss the old Ted's...sniff

JUST KEBABS!!!

Looking for a place for lunch in Manhattan where I can get just kebabs! No pita, no salad, no nonsense!!! I had a great experience in Flushing Queens, where they have these chinese carts that have hot charcoal pits, they throw some skewered mets (chicken, lamb, beef) on top and you have a very tasty kebab 5 minutes later for a dollar each. But they only come out after dark in Queens. Where can I get that (or something similar) for lunch in Manhattan? Anything in Chinatown? Midtown? I don't care if it it Chinese, Turkish or Afghan, I just need me some charred kebab meat!

Best Steak Frites in Manhattan?

Today's NY Times travel section got me thinking about this. Mark Bittman does a wonderful writeup on several outstanding places that do steak frites in Paris. Where is the best TRADITIONAL one found locally?

ran - new japanese on metropolitan ave.

Do post when you do. I'm very curious.

DiFara's ripped by Rosengarten

Thank you Mr. Rosengarten, and Guest, for debunking difaras. Yeah, alot of tragicially hip chowfrauds like it and oh so many of them are masochists that can't enjoy a meal unless they suffer to get it.....so therefore difara is god, as he makes them suffer the most. Reminds me of "L'Idiot" in the movie "L.A. STORY". One day, a movie will be made about difara and Patrick Stewart will play the old man..."YOU CANNOT HAVE THE PIE, YOU ARE NOT WORTHY"

Decent Bagel in Forest Hills?

Bagels ETC on Ascan across from Nick's makes a great fresh baked classic bagel and just started doing flat bagels too.

ran - new japanese on metropolitan ave.

Anyone tried it yet? It is across the street (almost) from Danny Brown's and looks quite nice from the outside.

punta sal on metro. ave - closed?

Still shut....any ideas? I thought they did a good business.

bringing thanksgiving in

Anyone know of a place in Queens that does "Thanksgiving To Go"? I saw Ben's Best on QB does it for 10 people, but I am thinking more for 4-6. Any suggestions welcome.

Are there any good Latin American beers?

Imperial, from Costa Rica, complete with gothic German eagle on the label. Available now at American Beer Dist. on Court St. in Brooklyn.

punta sal on metro. ave - closed?

I passed by Punta Sal several times recently at dinner time, including tonight, and it always hasa "We're Closed" sign in the window and chairs up on the tables. Anyone know if they went under?

gary's hot spot jamaican cart

Anyone know if Gary's Hot Spot is still around is one form or another? He had two street carts near the World Trade Center pre-9/11 as well as a storefront on Church St. for awhile. Any info is appreciated, I hope he was not forced out of business by the tragedy.

Danny Brown "DB" Wine Bar in Forest Hills

I saw that place too - in the old Melting Pot location. Can't tell what it is yet. Anyone in the know know?

best sushi high end best sushi day to day

Ise is as good as ever. You have to sit at the bar and go Omakase. If you don't, I can see where you may not get the very best cuts. Everything else in 'jon's' post is way off mark. "Foul", "real real bad" and "unpleasant"? No, never, unimaginable. Wasabi mix? Ginger from packets? You are referring to a different place. This is Ise on Pine Street, not some corner bodega. You are either mistaken or confused.

best sushi high end best sushi day to day

I find it funny that after 37 replies all you sushi afficinados fail to mention one of the originals that is uber-hi-quality, long-running, consistent, the original home of Gari, and easy to reserve with a phenomenal friendly sushi master. Why no mention of Ise on Pine St folks? Must be the hipster-unfriendly location...

High-end at its finest and cheaper than the other hi-end contenders mentioned. For shame, Chowhounds.

looking for a good oyster po'boy

Tried Grand Central Oyster Bar. It was OK, but a bit soggy and dressed very simply. I recall Delta Grill has a good, huge one but not what I would call "THE BEST".

Any idea where the de facto best one can be found?

sam adams octoberfest--where can i find it in queens??

Try the guys on Cooper Ave in Glendale between 80th St and Myrtle

American Beer on Court St.& Kane St. in Brooklyn would definitely have it.

great prix fixe with matching wine?

Gonna do Cru. Thanks for the suggestions.

great prix fixe with matching wine?

My wife & I have a special dinner coming up and have previously loved Annisa & Gramercy Tavern. Both places did a great 5-course chef's menu with outstanding wines by the glass per course to match. Any recommendations on a similar place to do it again? We were thinking Blue hill or Danube - other suggestions or comments on these are appreciated.
