Fresh or Frozen Cranberries nearby?

I *think* I saw them in the frozen food section at the Whole Foods in Brighton the other day.

Soft Shell Crabs?

Anyone seen soft shell crabs on the menu yet?

Thanks!

Former Bella Luna/Milky Way and June Bug Space in JP

Rumor has it that there are construction permits posted on the windows. Does anyone have the scoop?

Quark in the Boston area?

Does anyone know where I can find Quark? I picked up some wonderful lemon flavored quark at the ferry building farmers market in San Francisco and have since been trying to track some down.

Special Occasion Lunch in Sonoma with 2 Infants?

Hi all,

For my father-in-law's 70's birthday, we're renting a house in Healdsburg next week . We'd like to have a nice lunch out on his actual birthday, however we have 2.5 month old twins. They've been to a couple of restaurants and they mostly just sleep, although they tend to do better in louder, bustling restaurants. Any type of food will do - preferably some place that can accommodate a vegetarian.

Does anyone have a recommendation? We're open to traveling beyond Healdburg. We'd also consider an early dinner, but thought that lunch might be easier.

Thanks!

meringue powder in SF?

Thanks, everyone. I just called Sur la Table in Union Square and they carry it.

meringue powder in SF?

Hi all,

I'm looking for meringue powder. I checked Whole Foods and Safeway and neither have it. Has anyone seen it around or know where I can get some?

Thanks!

Soft Shell Crab in SF?

Thanks for the suggestions. I hit up Queen's Louisiana Po-Boy Cafe for lunch the other day for a soft shell crab po-boy....very tasty. The hush puppies were good as well. Cole Slaw not so much.

Soft Shell Crab in SF?

Hi all,

I'm a Boston transplant and one of my favorite things is soft shell crab season. Does SF have this and if so, where can I go to satisfy my cravings?

Thanks!

Chinese Restaurant Open Xmas Eve and Day

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice. After pulling through lots of Chowhound posts we'd narrowed it down to San Tung or S&T Hong Kong Seafood...we were lured to S&T by the clay pot crab with vermicelli. We went early since we were catching an 8pm show at the Kabuki and the place quickly filled up. Dinner was good - we ordered the aforementioned crab, roast pork, assorted mushrooms with lilly bulb, and crispy tofu with baby bok choy. The crab and the tofu were the standouts. The crab was super messy, but worth the effort. The tofu was nicely fried with a good custardy texture inside and has a bonus shrimp ball plopped on top. All in all we had an good Jewish xmas eve dinner.

Chinese Restaurant Open Xmas Eve and Day

Hi all,

After years of subjecting my Jewish husband to the holiday ham and Xmas carols, we are away from family this year and on our own. I'd like to indulge him by recreating his family's Chinese food and a movie Jewish Xmas. Any suggestions on a great (read: authentic) Chinese restaurant that would be open either Christmas Eve or Day? Thanks!

Cooks Illustrated Chicken Picatta?

Hi all,

Does anyone have this recipe or a good approximation? Thanks!

Menu Recs at Mistral?

Thanks! I really appreciate everyone's help.

Menu Recs at Mistral?

The guest will get to choose among 3 options + a fixed first course. We're also doing passed hors d'oeuvres to start.

One other question - Mistral doesn't seem very vegetarian-friendly - they've offered a pasta or a plate of grilled vegetables. Has anyone had a more creative vegetarian dish there?

Menu Recs at Mistral?

Hi all,

We're hosting a reception at Mistral next month and need to select our menu. I've never eaten there - are there any "can't miss" dishes. Anything we should avoid or dishes they do particularly well? Any guidance will be most welcome!

Thanks!

Great Spot for a Small, Casual Reception

Hi Hounds,

I'm a former Bostonian who is a bit out of the loop since I moved to San Francisco. I'm planning a small, casual wedding in November and am looking for a spot to have our reception. Yup, short notice. We're thinking 45-50 people and good food and wine is key, as is an interesting setting. I'm looking at a short list of places and have started making some calls. Some places we're considering are:
Toro (not super flexible on timing)
Vee Vee (probably too small, don't generally do private events)
Elephant Walk
Les Zygomates
Upstairs on the Square
Blue Room
Ten Tables (most likely too small...but am I understanding that there is one in Cambridge now as well?)
Lala Rokh (nice food, but don't love the space)
EVOO

Anyone have any experience working with any of these places? Also, how's the food at Les Zygomates? Any advice will be much appreciated!

Lovely Wedding Spot in Wine Country

Hi all,
Sorry for the repost, but my original post was curtailed by the moderators for straying to Medocino. Thanks so much to those who have responded...brilliant ideas, and I'd love some more. I'm looking for a lovely place to have a small - 20-30 person - wedding this November (yes, short notice!). We've been thinking Sonoma, but are open to other spots if the location is right.

Right now we're considering inns or vineyards where there could be some outdoor space for the ceremony, but we're really flexible. Most importantly, the food, whether catered or done at the venue itself, needs to be fabulous. Some of the places we've visited and liked either asthetically or for the food and wine are: Fieldstone, Trespass, Chateau St. Jean, Ubuntu, girl and the fig, Vine Cliff, Pina, etc. I don't want anything over the top (I harbor no princess wedding fantasies), just someplace simple and comfortable where we can celebrate with family and friends.

Any suggestions would be most, most welcome. Thanks in advance!

Taiwan Cafe renovations?

Hi all,

I've heard nasty rumors that Taiwan Cafe is undergoing renovations right now. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm flying in from California and have been dreaming of my Taiwan Cafe dinner!

Thanks.

blue corn tortilla

I saw them last week in the refrigerated section of the Whole Foods on Franklin Street.

Where can I find fresh quince in the bay area?

I saw some at the Heart of the City Farmers Market this past Wednesday...not sure about organic and sustainably farmed though.

Artichoke dipping sauce?

I mix up mayo with some curry powder. Very tasty.

Favorite Little-Known Italian Restaurant Outside of Boston Proper?

Sweet Basil has expanded and the space is not nearly so tiny now. It is still difficult to get a table though.

oops, this was supposed to go under the Sweet Basil post.

RW: Henrietta's Table rocked!

Wow, I had the exact opposite experience there last week. It wasn't RW but we had a reservation for 8 people on Saturday night. Although the place was virtually empty, the service was terrible and we felt abandoned - no water refills, forgotten orders, missing silverware, dirty plates not cleared. Our server didn't know who ordered what so was fumbling around with all the dishes asking who ordered what (a pet peeve of mine). She also gave us a bottle of wine that from 2004 instead of the 2000 that we ordered. When we brought this to her attention (we didn't notice until after she had done the pouring), she just kind of shrugged and said she didn't know what to do (or something to that effect). We later brought this up with the manager and she took the wine off the bill, which we appreciated. The food was really mediocre with no real stand out dishes although our friends who ordered the lamb shank seemed happy. And, to top it all off, the server brought over dessert menus before even clearing away our dinner plates! Based on that experience, I definitely won't be rushing back to Henrietta's Table.

Shakespeare eats?

Hi all,

I'm heading to Shakespeare on the common tonight and was thinking I'd pick up some take out but I'm blanking on ideas. I wanted something light, summery (I had a Speed's dog for lunch) and easy to eat while sitting on the ground. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Looking for a great Egg Salad Sandwich

Ula Cafe in Jamaica Plain makes a great egg salad sandwich with green peas and fresh dill. It is served on semolina bread or in a whole wheat wrap.

Anyone been to Lumiere recently?

I was there with some friends a couple of weeks ago. We did the chef's tasting menu which was excellent. Can't remember everything we were served but the highlights were the softshell crab appetizer, the salmon (veal was on the menu but my friend and I swapped it out for the salmon) and the panna cotta. I love Lumiere - never had a bad meal there.

Hosting a party - looking for good Middle Eastern Take Out

I've ordered takeout from Reef Cafe in Brighton for a party before. They (on somewhat short notice) pulled together several trays of food for me and it was all excellent. I can't remember now what I ordered, but my guests loved it.

I need a gift certificate to a great restaurant!

Hi All,

I am looking to buy a gift certificate to a great Chicago restaurant for a friend who is getting married. I do not live in Chicago and am completely unfamiliar with the restaurant scene, thus I am looking for you help.

Said friend has a diverse palate so there really are no limitations other than it should be something on the formal side (ie somewhat expensive) and appropriate for a wedding gift.

Thanks in advance for your help.
