Christmas Day dim sum or brunch in SGV. Where to go?

Thanks. If we didn't have to drag the kids, then I would go to one of the better restaurants. Acceptable works for me at this time. lol.

Christmas Day dim sum or brunch in SGV. Where to go?

My Chinese MIL will be staying with us this Christmas and we want to take her to Christmas Day dim sum or brunch in SGV. I'm looking for a decent place that is not going to be insanely crowded since we are going to have our kids with us. I don't mind waiting for a 1/2 hour or so for a table...I'm just so used to Christmas Day dim sum in Daly City and what a circus that is. I'm looking to avoid that. Hoping for suggestions to places that are somewhat under the radar.

Thanks!

Less expensive high-quality produce?

+3 on Marina Farms. I really like going there for fruit. Great selection of apples. Good prices too.

Lately, I've been with the quality of the produce at Top Valu Market in Culver City/Mar Vista. Seriously. :)

Where are the worst cocktails in LA?

Agreed! Same with their sangria.

That's what came to mind. If the one in MB is closed, the one in Hermosa Beach should fit the bill.

I can never leave Alpine Village without buying a bottle of curry ketchup. I'll buy knackwurst there was well and make currywurst at home.

Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?

He did call me back late last week, but I had booked with someone else. It would have been nice if he would have left notification on his voicemail stating that he was unavailable and would start returning phone calls on certain date. I'm not happy that he called me two weeks after my initial phone call. It's too bad, because I really wanted to use him.

Cater for Children's party - westside?

I've tried calling TACO CHOP more than once to get a quote. I wanted a little more variety than just tacos, so the fact that they did bacon wrapped dogs and quesadillas for someone here one me over. I wish they would call me back. :(
Even if it's to let me know that they aren't available...or breath into the phone... SUMTHIN!

I called Lety's Taco catering, and they answered right away (thank goodness) and quoted me $320 for tacos only and $370 if I also wanted rice, beans and utensils. This seemed like a good option until my husband mentioned that we should have pizza as well since he didn't think that my FIL could handle eating tacos with his sensitive stomach (but pizza is okay, srsly?)

This kind of threw the taco catering option out the door in my book, because what's the point of having taco catering if we are getting other types of food as well? We would need to get enough pizza to feed everyone just in case. Now we are spending way more than we want. We could grill hot dogs ourselves, but we really didn't want to do any cooking (but it's still an option, We are having the party at my parents house instead of our home in the South Bay, so the easier the better).

So, I'm still keeping Tacomiendo in mind for taquitos, rice, beans, etc...

But now I'm considering another option: Bay Cities or Sorrento in Culver City for sandwiches, salad, and either baked lasagna or baked shells. We can get pizza to compliment the meal and it should come out cheaper than the taco + pizza option. I know that Bay Cities is a favorite, but how are the sandwiches when they are catered? How is their lasagna? I've had Sorrento's baked shells before at a party and they were pretty good. I've had decent sandwiches from there in the past, but haven't had one in a long time. Sorrento is close to home, so it is more convenient.

I'm totally overthinking this. lol.

Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?

Has anyone had any trouble with TACO CHOP's response time? I've left a couple of messages for them this week and no one has called me back. There is no indication that they are on vacation or out of town. :(

Taco Caterer for Party - Any Recs?

Thanks for the review! This is PERFECT for my son's party. I just left a message for them to see if they are available and for how much. I want the same set up with the tacos, quesadillas and hot dogs. :)

Cater for Children's party - westside?

YES!! I wholeheartedly agree. :) Just the though of that chicken sitting, there cold. Blech. I'm sure that Zankou would be an major upgrade, but I'm sure that it wouldn't fare too well sitting out either.

El Abajeno doesn't do catering :(
Tacomiendo does, so I'll swing by there and price everything probably on Monday. :)

Cater for Children's party - westside?

I was thinking about a taco caterer, but I'll have to call around and see if I can get one for about $300. I really don't want to go over that price because I'm not looking to spend a fortune on birthday party food (I want rather sink the extra $$ into a nice gift for my son :-))

eta: Tacomiendo is a great suggestion! It's one of my favortie places for lunch. :-)
El abajeno does hard shell tacos - that would be great with rice and beans and a salad....ohhh!

Cater for Children's party - westside?

I'm looking to spend around $250-300 for about 20 kids and 25 adults. I'm not really wanting to go the El Pollo Loco route, so I was wondering if anyone had any local suggestions near Culver City?

I was thinking about Zankou, but I'm not sure what sides I would get that would be kid or picky-eater friendly. (unless I go with El Pollo Loco sides, hmmm....)

Any good pizza places in the area? :)

Dumpling Station Truck - in Pasadena right now

I've never had anything from dumpling station, but most of my friends have and the first thing they rave about are the garlic wasabi fries. It's a shame that you didn't have the same experience. Hopefully the truck will come my way soon to the South Bay and I can try them for myself.

Donuts in the South Bay?

Daily Donuts on the corner of Crenshaw and Sepulveda in Torrance. It's a store is connected to a car wash. It isn't the best looking place, but they do make a decent donut.

Good Indian, middle eastern, or other ethnic groceries in Westwood?

I love Payless Produce. That place was a god send during my early 20's "Poor years." The produce was hot or miss, but it was priced really well. The halal meat counter was awesome. I still go and get chicken from there. It tastes much better than chicken from the grocery store. The pita bread is always fresh - I miss living near this place!

I also miss the Lebanese restaurant that occupied the space where Thai Boom is now. They had good eats.

Are there any local breweries/brewpubs that sell their beer in bottles? We are throwing some Christmas gift ideas around and are considering making samplings of local brews.

Why are baguettes in the US so bad?

a Puerto Rican baguette is not like Cuban bread at all. They are similar to a Vietnamese baguette imo.
