Amaranth. Ever cook it?

You can also turn it into flour- I sometimes will sub it in to my homemade bread for a little variety. (And I have also heard about popping it- must try!)

Gluten Free... Overblown, by a lot?

But some people are legitimately gluten-free and NOT celiac- are you saying I should lie just to be taken seriously? I think most people who genuinely live GF, realize the difficulties of preparing GF food (when you're not used to it), and so (as another poster said) tend to order items that are "naturally" gluten free and keep their fingers crossed. If I get glutened, I will have stomach cramps, brain fog and bloating. Believe me, if I could eat all the wonderful delicious food on your menu I would. Being GF is a pain in the a**. But most of us who live this way do it because we feel like hell when we don't. And yes, it drives me crazy too when I am at a catered lunch and a GF pizza has been kindly ordered for me, and all sorts of people swarm it and say they "should be" or "are trying to go" GF. I still don't totally get the vitriol though. Oops- just realized this post is a year old- oh well!

What are you baking these days? April 2014 edition! [Through April 30, 2014]

Yes it is GF bread! Here is the link to my recipe. (One note: for a simple loaf just use 1/2 rice flour and 1/2 tapioca starch)

Easter dinner, special/fun side dish suggestions?

That sounds beautiful! I must try the Easter pie, but unfortunately all my guests have the expectations of Roast Turkey, hence the idea of differentiating the meal with side dishes.. But I WILL try the pie only own time, thanks!

Well, it was at my house, and now I am locked in to the expectations! I will try to break it up with a smaller bird AND a baked ham. Love the scalloped potatoes too.

Lime-Blackberry Tarts and Lime-Chocolate tarts. Never made a curd before and decided to jump in- would have made lemon, but had a bag of limes, so..!! The first time made them half plain, half with some chocolate ganache, and the second time with a single bodacious blackberry on top. Oh, and homemade Gluten Free pastry...so gooood.
And bread. Always bread.

...just don't use sweet (sushi) rice flour as it has completely different properties- fantastic for some things though!

Easter dinner, special/fun side dish suggestions?

I am having the family over for Easter (11 people), and doing the traditional Turkey with all the fixings, and maybe even a Ham as I did one year (yum). Here is my dilemma: I would love to make something different, but picky eaters abound, so I am thinking if I have the classics, I could add in some wonderful and interesting side dishes. What are your faves? I LOVE cooking and would be so happy to offer something fun and different. What I usually do: Turkey with homemade cornbread stuffing, fingerling potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, butternut squash (either pureed or diced and baked with garlic, parmesan and parsley), green beans or asparagus, cranberry sauce. Dessert is usually pie or tarts. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!

2014 Restaurant and Food Store CHANGES and CLOSINGS

I lucked out and caught the 50% off sale the second day...then whoosh, they were closed.
Good news, though, is that the Candied Olives will still be available to purchase at Ruby WatchCo. Olive lovers out there, these you must try.

Gluten Free Midtown neighbourhood/casual eateries and bakeries (and beyond)?

Going to the great NYC in January and looking for Gluten Free-friendly casual but good/neighbourhood eateries around the city in general and Empire State building in particular(staying at The Wolcott). I am travelling with my best friend, and 4 teenagers (2 are hers 2 are mine!). Any local GF bakery suggestions would be great too! I am the only one in my group of 6 that is GF, and I don't want to be a pain to them- so it would be great to find a GF bakery close by when we are just grabbing food on the go.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions- can't wait to get back to the City!!

Looking for good Juicer for Leafy Greens

NutriBullet works really well with Kale/ Spinach/ Carrots etc- but it is NOT a juicer per se, as all the pulp and fibre gets completely pulverized. Costs about $100 and worth it depending on what you need it to do. Very easy to clean too!

Gluten free bread question

I realize you posted this some months ago, but it is hard to know without the whole recipe. I make bread, and while we usually eat it up before needing to freeze it, slicing before freezing, and then thawing and toasting, results in the same texture. If you post your recipe, I can try to trouble shoot for you!

Trying to recall cookies from the past

Oh I loved those raisin cookies! Not generally a fan of raisins in cookies or muffins, but "squashed fly biscuits" were a big hit in our house! My Dad was British, and he would regularly go to Marks and Spencer's (in Toronto) to get English food, and they carried those there. You might be able to find these still at one of those British speciality shops...

Foodie Pot-Luck contribution: what to take???

totally agree- in the tart recipe no crazy ingredients, but I think I will not label it as "gluten-free" and just let people enjoy and let the tart speak for itself :)

The tart crust recipe is here, and for the filling I used one of Martha Stewart's- very good. :)
