I wouldn't uninvite them from the start. Let them know what you're doing, and that there's an alternative plan. Maybe you'll be surprised to see that most of them are willing to go. (I wouldn't count on the animal protein lady though, haha)

Using a colander or any other machine is cheating! My Swabian grandmother makes them by placing some of the dough on a wooden board, and cutting tiny slices off individually. Kind of like in this video:

Am I Being Petty?

mashi, I do the same thing.
I always return dishes with something else in them. I'd be mortified if I forgot one time, and one of my friends came over and saw their dish in my kitchen.

I do think the cost and the hassle of getting new ones matters.
At the same time though, I have never asked for anything back.. I think I'm too proud for that. I just hope people will follow my example.
