Pop Up Pot Luck Seder?
YOU are the ONLY responder! I guess there aren't many with the same needs. Maybe next year? Maybe if it were "planned" more in advance we'd have more takers. I SEDER SKYPED (patent pending lol) to get a little passovering in. Did nothing for my kids though ... to whom the "holiday" was marked with chocolate bunnies! Next year we will do better ... (not in Jerusalem.) It's hard to instill some sense of Jewishness when one is not religious ... at all. I so wish at least ONE restaurant did a Seder here like in other cities....

Pop Up Pot Luck Seder?
Any interest in organizing this quickly for the non observant unaffiliated and (lets face it) lazy Jews (like myself) with no place to go and little inclination to put the WHOLE thing together? We can do pot luck pop up! BUFFET! Who's in?

Non-Chocolate Guinness cake?
I have had Irish Car Bomb Ice Cream that was a Guinness base w/ a Baileys caramel swirl and it was VERY good.
Buttercream frosting for Ice Cream Cake....
Will this recipe posted by curiousbaker in 2005 here (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/277826) work on an ice cream cake? I'm mostly concerned with it's ability to freeze and thaw and still look and taste great. Also ... I'm assuming I can add any flavor or color by the usual methods.... Thanks!
Swiss buttercream
4 egg whites
1 cup sugar
3.5 sticks butter, room temp
Put whites and sugar in a bowl over simmering water. Whisk until sugar is dissolved and mixture is warm to the touch. Remove from heat. Whip until cool. Add butter piece by piece. Whip like heck.

cupcake strategy
Cupcakes were great today. I baked on Tuesday and stored them in the plastic tupperware like cupcake suitcases. They were fine this morning. I defrosted the buttercream on Wednesday night and iced this morning before the party. They were beautiful. I did chocolate, coconut and strawberry. YUM!

Thanks grey.... On your advice, I checked the forecast and it looks like a rainy day in the mid 60s...so I hope I'll be ok w/ butter cream. I have some cupcake travel plasticy containers.... On Tuesday I'll just wrap them up w/ saran wrap and put them in those and hope they'll still be fresh tasting. You're right that I couldn't possibly fit them in the fridge. I think I'll have them all set to go, each in it's own little travel niche and frost them at the last second w/ pastry bags and a giant tip. I should have around 2 hours between gymnastics and party time. The trick will be making sure the frosting is at the piping consistency when I need it to be.
cupcake strategy
I need to make 5 dozen cupcakes for Thursday afternoon. I HAVE to go somewhere Thursday morning. I have a big chunk of available time (and a babysitter) on Tuesday. I was thinking that I could make the butter cream frosting tonight and tomorrow and then bake all the cupcakes on Tuesday. When do you think is the earliest I could ice the cupcakes? Do they need to be refrigerated between baking and icing and what about after they are iced? OYE!
calgary's best kept secrets
The hummos and baba is really good too. You can get large containers to go...
Yo Baby YYC
My guy is flexible about "eating" yogurt... he'll eat whatever brand as long as it's a preferred flavor....but the "drinking" yogurt is really his special yummy thing.... it's a staple. We'll adjust without it, but I always felt good about his downing one of those a day...... I'll try the Liberte. Thanks.

Thanks for posting this...I'll go and check it out. Planet Organic isn't on my regular hunting and gathering route... but maybe it should be. I'll also go check out what Superstore has. (wonder why the thread was removed?)

Thai Food in Calgary?
Do any or all of these places do the thinly cut Thai pork chops w/ the sweetish bbq ish flavor? They were my (4 year old) son's favorite delivery meal in NY and I am trying to locate them here..... My all around best Thaiexperience here has been at Thai Sa On.... but it's so expensive that it relegates itself to a special occasion meal instead of everyday standby.
Donuts (Calgary)
Hi Messier.... I too am newly arrived from NYC and experiencing a fair bit of homesickness...food and otherwise. It probably wont help either of us to egg each other on.... but I'm sure we will. My main concern now, as we unpack and try to settle in with two small antsy younguns, is DELIVERY OPTIONS...... we were soooo spoiled in the west village..... do I have to cook here? I've lived here before for 5 years between 2002 and 2007, so am familiar w/ lots that is available here..... the main thing to get used to here verses NY with regard to food.... is this.... here, there is everything, pretty much, but maybe just one or two representations ofeach culture...so not so much choice w/in each ethnic option..... so you either like it and add it your list of yummy, or do without until your next trip home. The other major difference is that here, ethnic food of all kinds can get very pricey. NY is surprisingly cheap for lots of types of food.... oh how I miss Kobma Thai from the corner that was 16 bucks for 2 dishes and got to my door in less than 10 minutes! I can't help you with the donuts... (except to say that I like the mini ones from the machine and have thought for years that they would do a kick a** business on the right street corner in NY......).....but for other pastries, Ladybug at the Farmer's Market is very yummy. They have frozencroissants that you can bake off at home...nice!
Mini desserts???
Venero's (spelled wrong I'm sure!) on 2nd and 11th I think make amazing mini canolis.
Best Burger in Calgary?
Is Buchanan's the restaurant on 10th street (ish) on the corner where they will actually make it for you RARE? If so.... I agree!
Da Andrea vs. Pepe Verde (west villlage for DELIVERY)
I've been a Pepe fan for years.... but last night, after reading these board's archives, I decided to give Da Andrea a try. I had the pappardelle and sausage and my friend had the spaghetti bolognese. The spaghetti was overcooked and mushy, the sauce just ok. The pappardelle was good, but I have to say, I like Pepe's better w/ a pink sauce..... was it the delivery that changed the meal?
Washington / Hudson Heights delivery?
Thanks MMRuth..... I did a search before posting and saw the first link and then a bunch of outdated ones.....
It seems like the rest of the neighborhood, things are constantly evolving...... do you live up there?
If anyuone lives up there and has personal experience w/ delivery or local restos, I'd love to hear...
Washington / Hudson Heights delivery?
I'm looking at apartments up around W. 181 through W. 190 west of Broadway...... am I insane for needing to know what my delivery options would be if we lived there? There seem to be so few food establishments on the 2 "main" streets (181 and 187) and I'm not sure if the Bway places 20 blocks up or down will deliver........Anyone know?
