Which beef cut to substitute into today's NYT recipe for Bo Ssam (slow-roasted Korean pork shoulder)?

I was thinking the same thing as I read the recipe! Thanks for posting this question.

Has anyone used any of those Oxygen sauces from Israel?

I use the Mango Curry sauce very often for chicken. I pour a bottle of it on cut up chicken (one bottle is enough for two chickens), cover with foil, bake at 350 for 30 minutes and uncovered for another 30-40 minutes. Everyone loves it in my house.

Teaneck Updates

Shnitzel Plus had a sign tonight that says they will open on Tuesday, 11/22.

Motzai Shabbas restaurant in Teaneck...?

Chickie's is on West Englewood Avenue, but in Teaneck.

Pesach Coffee Cake recipe

Thanks!

Pesach Coffee Cake recipe

I guess I didn't stockpile enough Maneschewitz coffee cake mix (my children's Pesach staple). I am down to my last two boxes. Does anyone have a recipe for a homemade alternative? I'm all for homemade baked goods but you have to admit, that coffee cake mix is awesome--that's why it's the only cake mix sold out at every store near me in Teaneck.

Cholent for Pesach

I have a Pesachdik crock pot and going to attempt to make a cholent for Shabbat of Pesach--anyone do this and have a good recipe? Would quinoa be a good substitute for barley?

Positive Experience at ETC. steakhouse in Teaneck

We went this past weekend for my husband's birthday, with our 4 kids. We had the risotto, the gnocchi with beef cheeks, and potato leek soup as appetizers--everyone loved everything. The risotto was especially good. My husband had the short ribs--to die for. Loved my peppercorn fillet steak, served with a marrow bone with a tiny spoon. I recommend the zeppoles for dessert. It's so refreshing to to to a kosher restaurant where the chef really cares about his food....12 thumbs up from my family!

NOBO Experience

Very disturbing! Shocking that nothing has changed and in fact only gotten worse since it was The Pasta Factory!

Kosher Bean Thread or Rice Stick noodles?

Anyone know where to find these with kosher certification?

ETC STEAKHOUSE - REVIEW OF OUR TASTING MENU EXPERIENCE

NOT true. I drove by last night just to verify. Restaurant was full around 9:30.

Imah Restaurant -- New Place in Teaneck

This is very disappointing. We don't really need a carbon copy of Sababa Grill directly across the street from it! Cafe Adam is a real loss--my kids loved to walk to Cedar Lane and hang out there with friends and eat reasonably priced and tasty DAIRY food.

Teaneck/Englewood update

Drove by Mabat last night and it was open, just FYI.

Best place for breakfast in Jerusalem

Every Friday, in the basement of Hechal Shlomo, Marvad Haksamim (restaurant on Emek Refaim) sells the most delicious and inexpensive take-out food, everything from appetizers to desserts and challah and grape juice. . A much better deal than any of the hotels, which are extremely expensive for Shabbat dinner.

Best Restaurants in Jerusalem

I had this beet ravioli with goat cheese that I can still taste...
I have never had pasta like that in a kosher restaurant in the US...have yet to go Rome, though.

Best Restaurants in Jerusalem

missed the 6 hr lamb, but sounds interesting....we had two different tagines and the pastilla, which was absolutely incredible. Best part: the waitress pours the tea about 4 feet above the glass, and it's delicious. It's a great place for families because everything is served family style with a lazy Susan in the middle for passing. Man, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.

Best Restaurants in Jerusalem

We loved Luciana on Emek Refaim. Delicious homemade pasta. We also had a great meal at Darna--traditional Morrocan with great ambiance and amazing food.

New York Times review of ETC, Shalom Bombay, and Smokey Joe's

The New York Times did a piece on the growing kosher dining scene in Teaneck today...here's the link. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/13/nyregion/13dinenj.html

Ad hoc at home ok for kosher kitchen?

I have Susie Fischbein's "Kosher by Design Entertains" and "Short on Time," and have read through most of the other cookbooks. What bothers me about these is that they are big on presentation but weak on food, and full of recycled recipes from her other books and even recycled blurbs about the recipes. My biggest pet peeve (here's the teacher in me) is the number of grammatical errors on every page. It's as if the editor had no idea about punctuating sentences. I don't think I'm being overly picky here; if I buy a cookbook, I expect it's going to be readable, and I am so offended by the lack of concern for clarity on the part of the publisher. As a foodie, I am looking forward to owning Ad Hoc even if I can't cook most of the recipes because I'm sure it's exceptionally well written and will give me lots of ideas for adaptation, if not merely a great read.

Pre-theater meal in Theater District, NYC

Update: when we got into the city, we decided to try LeMarais. It was 5:50, we were seated immediately, and were out the door by 7. Food was good, as usual. Love their fries and roast chicken. My daughter had the coq au vin, which was nice. We shared a dessert and made it to be seated for Hamlet with Jude Law (had to throw that in--it was awesome)by 7:30. All's well that ends well :)

Pre-theater meal in Theater District, NYC

Going to a 7:30 show tonight and can't get into the city until 6 or so...does anyone have a recommendation for a fast yet decent place to go? We like Le Marais but I don't know if we can be in and out of there in time to be seated at 7:30. Is the Clubhouse Cafe across the street a better choice--faster service?

Mike's Bistro: Chef's Tasting Report

Thanks so much for posting such a detailed review. I've been thinking about doing the tasting menu at Mike's for a while. We love Mike's, though we don't get there often. I actually appreciate the small portions there, while others complain, because I can't stand enormous portions that are more than a human should be eating in a sitting, no matter what the price.

I love the gnocchi--and just fyi--it's made with duck confit. Don't think the feet of the duck would be all that tasty. :)

sukkas in teaneck?

Rabica and Pasta Factory have sukkot.

Kosher at Garden State Plaza?

It's called Butler's Chocolate Cafe. It's near California Pizza Kitchen and JC Penney. They have sandwiches, yogurt parfaits, baked goods, coffees, and ice cream. It's a British or Irish chain that sells gourmet chocolates, and apparently they are working on getting supervision for the chocolate. Everything else is kosher, not sure under whose hashgacha.

Boeuf Bourguignon in a Crock Pot for Shabbat?

My daughters and I saw "Julie and Julia" and have been thinking about this dish ever since. We thought that it might be a nice change of pace from cholent and were thinking of making it this weekend for Shabbat Sukkot. What's the consensus about cooking this dish in a Crock Pot and serving for Shabbat lunch? And would you substitute beef fry for the bacon, or just leave it out?

What do you think the new trend in Kosher will be?

I miss the overstuffed chairs at Lazy Bean, but I must disagree about the coffee--it is excellent, with lots of variety, and with a card, every 11th coffee is free. I have only known the owner to be friendly, the manager knows all her customers by name and knows their orders, and the low fat muffins are always fresh and delicious. I enjoy the paninis, and my only problem with them is that they are too big. Their soups are DELICIOUS as well; they have an amazing spinach carrot and a potato leek that I like as well. It's great to have a kosher place like this, but the nice thing about Lazy Bean is that it continues to attract all kinds of people in Teaneck, not necessarily Jewish or Kosher. There is no Starbucks in Teaneck, so this is the place to go. I don't think every restaurant needs to cater to people who want their kids to run around in a restaurant and annoy patrons who want to read their newspaper or have a business meeting over coffee, and I say this as a mother of 4 kids who had no problem adhering to the owner's request that small children not sit on the now absent overstuffed furniture.

Nice review of Smokey Joe's, Teaneck

I was really happy to see this as one of Smokey's defenders on this board. I really do like their food and I hope this review will boost them a bit.

Outrageous treatment at The Pasta Factory

I was pleasantly surprised today to receive a letter of apology and a $100 gift certificate from The Pasta Factory. Looks like they have a new manager (the son of the owner) and are making an effort, in fact, to be nice.
