Growlers: does anyone use them in LA?

the bonaventure brewery sells their beers in growlers. they have 3 regular beers (blonde, pale & strawberry blonde) and a rotating seasonal beer that they change out. right now i think it's a hophead red.

KOSHER in santa monica?

i would, but as i said before, she's not from this area. i don't feel "sorry" for her, but she has commented before that she feels "stuck" with pizza and vegetarian dishes, so i thought it would be nice to address her feelings.

anyway, it seems like the options are too limited on this side of the 405 anyway to really address it at this point as lunch is today.

KOSHER in santa monica?

I have a friend who won't eat meat outside of her home unless it's kosher, so whenever we eat, we're usually relegated to pizza and vegetarian options since she's not from santa monica & doesn't know of any places and I'm not Jewish, so there's never been a need to find out.

But, we're having lunch again tomorrow and I'd really like to go the extra mile and have a food option for her so she wouldn't feel like her choices are limited. Because of the rain, I'd like to stay west of the 405, which is why I'm not sure what my options are over here in Santa Monica.

Any input would be SO SO SO appreciated. Thanks!

first big night out after a cleanse! suggestions?

so after a long and food-filled trip to NY for the holidays, the bf and I decided to abstain from carbs & alcohol (including wine). tonight is our first big night back in LA where we can have a real meal and real drinks!!! (I'M SO EXCITED! i love bread, pasta & rice, so this has been hard!)

Where would you eat after a week of torture like the one I just finished? We're really open to all kinds of food so all suggestions are welcome. We're on the Westside though, and the bf hates driving past La Brea Ave. on Friday nights (NIGHTMARE). But that's the only restriction.

Thanks!

ISO "New York onions" (hot dog topping - NOT Pink's)

nybd - new york bagel deli on wilshire & 23rd in santa monica sells sabrett's onions. the owner is from new york. they also sell sabrett's hot dogs at the deli.

Huckleberry, anyone?

actually, the rules were posted only recently, once they failed to address the situation any other way. so to say the sign is clearly posted is only a delayed and misguided reaction to a problem that has been in existence from the beginning. and to say that we disrupt the little flow there is isn't our fault. there should be FAR more than a "little" flow considering they were well aware of their following for their breakfasts when they were still over at the rustic canyon, of which we were loyal followers as well and were fine with their system over there.

so to say good riddance to customers who have been following their rules and their cooking for well over a year is a misguided statement on your part.

AK: AOK

i agree - there were definite hits and misses.
we went last night and while what we had was more or less good, there was nothing we felt we would return for or crave, ever again. the space is really beautiful, though.

on another note, i have no problems paying for great food, but for drinks, two apps and two entrees for two people and a bill of 150 before tip, it just wasn't worth it to me. i've paid a lot more for meals that i didn't even blink at the price because they were THAT worth it. AK did NOT deliver that for us.

Huckleberry, anyone?

especially when the bottom line is that they're always busy, no matter what and there just aren't enough tables. period. with or without patrons holding tables.

Huckleberry, anyone?

my boyfriend and i have been going to huckleberry fairly regularly, with me patiently waiting in line (and willingly paying $12 for mediocre fried green tomatoes last weekend) while he's waited outside at a table to watch over our bicycles. today one of the staff came over and told my boyfriend he couldn't sit at a table until he had food there.

um. really?

we go there almost every weekend, tip generously and wait in line patiently. he can't just sit at a table?

huckleberry just lost two more due to their "madhouse" as others have referred to it.

Brewery in LA?

at the bonaventure brewery they do a blonde ale, a pale ale, a white ale, and a strawberry blonde. pass on the blonde and the white ales but the strawberry & the pale are good. happy hour food makes it worth it from 3-7 and they have an amaaaaaaaaaazing outdoor patio that gives you the best view of downtown la for the least amount of money.

Help me find PEA TENDRILS!

nijiwa on sawtelle has them all the time.

Best westside pizza?

"Slice" is really great. We had pizza delivered at 930 last sunday night and it wasn't dry or anything that you might expect to be delivered on a sunday night near closing time. It was honestly so great that I actually brought it up to my boyfriend again today, just remarking on how good it was. Definitely NY style pizza though, if that's what you're looking for...
I get to NY often enough and my boyfriend grew up there -- Slice & Joe's are the only ones we've found that are close.

STREET finally opens Monday

i went to street on friday, after having gone to the private opening last friday as well. the food was great, if you take it for what it is. i definitely passed on the $16 bowl of pho, but that's because i'm vietnamese and it probably wouldn't stand a chance (yes, i'm being completely biased!)

some things were definitely a miss, like the shrimp with shizo. (pretty bland - definitely not memorable)...
...but there were things like the white radish cake which was so good i would have ordered another plate had i not been stuffed (although the sunny side up egg that accompanied the dish definitely threw me off)

the cuban potato cake is another good dish with a great balance between sauce and cake and i like the use of raisans & oddly enough, capers.

their stir-fried noodles with shrimp & pork belly was sadly bland, but the noodles were cooked really well - not "gummy" at all, which i've found a lot when eating at restaurants that aren't really chinese-based.

the wine list was really well put together & the wine service is interesting as they serve the wine in stemless glasses & put the remaining wine in what looks like recycled bitters jars for you to pour yourself.

the kitchen was a little slow, but it was the first friday and packed. sit outside near the fire if you can. the ambience is nice & whoever is making the music selection out there scores definitely points. i heard miles davis, louis armstrong and ella fitzgerald out there that night.

Lunch Delivery in Hollywood

look at the website orderinfood.com
they'll let you type in the zip code where you are and bring up a listing of all places in that area that deliver and they usually have scans of menus for each of the places. hope that helps.

please don't judge me because i'm from LA :(

okay. i've come to decide that i'd like to exclude morimoto from the decision. but what about jean georges?

please don't judge me because i'm from LA :(

what about le cirque?

please don't judge me because i'm from LA :(

yeah i took the bf to craft for his birthday and he loved it. he was really happy and thought the food was great. but every time we're in the city, he mentions le bernardin whenever we pass it, so i'm thinking it would resonate with him more. although i'd really love to go to per se or le cirque. but i guess le bernardin is where it's probably going to be.

please don't judge me because i'm from LA :(

i've considered eleven madison park, jean-georges and daniel ... if it was between those three, which would you choose?

please don't judge me because i'm from LA :(

yeah i know. if food was the only factor, i don't think i'd really choose either of them, but my bf's not a foodie. he's more intrigued by the chefs because he's seen them cook things on tv. so it's not really about me choosing as much as i want him to have fun and feel special.

please don't judge me because i'm from LA :(

i love food. all day, every day. but i'm only an LA foodie. so my boyfriend and i are making our way out to new york for the holidays [where he's originally from] and i'm giving him 12 gifts for the 12 days of christmas. since we're both mutual foodies, i wanted my 12th gift to him to be a really great christmas dinner at either LE BERNARDIN or MORIMOTO.

before you judge me, let me just say that i want the meal to be an experience from a standpoint that we can both refer to. eric ripert is always on "top chef" which is a show we love, morimoto is always on "iron chef" which we also love. so taking into account the idea of experience, christmas, romance, tasting/omakase menu, etc ...

HELP ME!

also, for clarification, i've already checked and YES, both of these restaurants are open for christmas evening. thanks! please, chowhounders, don't fail me now.

coming to chicago in november

I'll be traveling with my boyfriend and it's going to be a nice weekend, romantic trip for us and a chance to explore a new city together, even though we've both been to chicago separately, it'll be a new "couple" experience for us. we're big foodies here in LA and are completely ready to eat our way through chicago and obviously explore what else the city has to offer.

FRIDAY
- i have reservations for charlie trotter's, but have also been hearing about moto - honestly both of these are not my first choice, as i really wanted to go to alinea, but if forced to choose between the two, which one would be better?

SATURDAY
- i also have reservations for nomi the next night, but i'm not hearing anything amazing about their food, only about the view. so i was thinking of going to avec or the bristol instead as a foodie thing and then just going for drinks to the violet hour and the signature lounge or maybe even the w on the lake?

SUNDAY
- i have brunch reservations at sepia. any other suggestions? i really like sepia so far, but am completely open to other options.

obviously in between, we'll do other touristy things like hot dogs, italian beef sandwiches, deep-dish pizza, millenium park, etc.

any recommendations or "stop, don't eat THERE!" advice would be tremendously helpful. our last few trips together haven't been so great. we're hoping for this one to be a make-up for all our bad trips.

help!
